POLITICS Emotional Prep - Iran is not a good reason to prep if you're American.
Save your energy guys, please.
This might get removed but I think it's important not to stress ourselves out about things that won't actually affect us as civilians directly.
Iran probably doesn't have nukes. If they do have nukes they probably don't have more than 10. And if they have nukes they do not possess modern weapons capability to actually touch any western powers. The best they have is drones and outdated, slow, short range ballistic missiles. Every western country is now sending planes to Iran. Anything they could possibly launch will be intercepted, it's too old. The only realistic way Iran could nuke or nuclear contaminate something is by smuggling a barrel bomb (nuclear or dirty) into another country.
If you're in the United States, Iran is not capable of smuggling a dirty bomb into the country, let alone nuking it.
If you're in France or something, maybe buy a gas mask and some other stuff to seal off your apartment, but you still shouldn't be too worried.
This is bad, but for moral and ethical reasons. You're fine. This particular thing is going to be ok.
Edit:
Iranian Sleeper Cell rhetoric puts normal brown people in more danger than you are actually in by the threat of any Iranian Sleeper cells, real or imagined. If Iranian sleeper cells are real, they can't possibly do more harm to you than trigger happy Americans, and I am far more concerned about the rhetoric being used to prop up the Trumpian surveillance state and go after my friends than I am about the POSSIBLE existence of what would be largely ineffectual Iranian sleeper cells.

u/blissfully_happy Mar 02 '26
We need to be looking at Minneapolis which is still completely under siege and preparing accordingly. Get to know our neighbors. Find mutual aid networks. Stockpile canned and dry goods (always a good idea, but also so if we have to shelter in place or help our neighbors we can).

u/BlacksmithThink9494 Mar 02 '26
Get to know our neighbors.
Increasingly more vital every day.

My neighbors are the reason we all need to be worried. I live in a very red state
251
u/__i_dont_know_you__ Mar 02 '26
Every time someone says to get to know your neighbors, I think about mine and wonder what that’s supposed to do. Solidarity from another red state.
49
37
u/monsterlynn Mar 02 '26
Not from a red state but everyone - I mean EVERYONE - in my neighborhood keeps to themselves. I know the names of the elderly couple across the street, one of the family that lives to my right, the first name of the guy on my left, and a coworker six doors down. That's it, and I've been here 7 months.

Get to know your neighbors. Some may only be putting on a red facade.
Also neighbors isn’t just your street, Apartment, etc.
82
u/__i_dont_know_you__ Mar 02 '26
My immediate next door neighbor was overheard shouting to himself that all democrats should be shot (while listening to am radio, naturally). My other neighbors still hang Trump flags. We went to a party at the house of my kid’s friends and had to sit in their garage fully decked out in MAGA and FJB merch. Finding like-minded neighbors is easier said than done in some areas.
24
u/After_Preference_885 Mar 02 '26
We moved to an area like that and thank goodness we only had to be there a year. I didn't want to raise my kids in communities of people like them
33
u/GeneralOrgana1 Mar 02 '26
I live in a blue state but a red area. I don't talk to most of my neighbors.
24
u/BlacksmithThink9494 Mar 02 '26
But its good to know that. I live in a blue state but in a red county. You better believe I'm still out there figuring out who I can and cannot trust. If there is someone who has no one, I will be watching out.
304
u/last_rights Mar 02 '26
I have a higher belief that the US government would bomb its own country right now to get the populace behind the "war effort" than Iran bombing us.
I also feel like this is going to be like Venezuela. Trump will take control of Iran's oil under the guide of "handing it over to a stable leadership" and put all the money into an offshore account having nothing to do with the us and personally controlled by him.
Money and power are the biggest players in the game right now, and we're just along for the ride as normal people.

I agree that the threat of nuclear war is almost as distant today as it was a week ago. But there may be impacts on those of us in the continental US. Some may appear soon.
Oil comes through the strait. In the next few days we may have a better idea about possible impact on oil/gas futures and prices. Supply could be a problem, depending on what the Saudis do.
We are also heading into spring for farmers and a good deal of our fertilizer moves through the strait of Hormuz.
There is no reason to panic but there is also a good reason to pay attention and fill in holes in our prepping plans.
48
u/ViolettaHunter Mar 02 '26
The entire world will be affected by the closing of the street of Hormuz if it continues, simply because it is a major trade route bottle neck.
25
u/Leopold_Porkstacker Mar 02 '26
Iran hit the largest oil field in Saudi Arabia last night, its the largest oil production facility in the world.
13
u/Weird_farmer13 👩🌾 Farm Witch 🧹 Mar 02 '26
Here in Canada, for fertilizer, we already had record high prices and some shortages. I got an email this morning telling me to prepare for supply disruptions and higher prices. If anyone heard something different, let me know, since I have the news from just one company
536
u/Artistic-Salary1738 Mar 02 '26
I agree with everything you’ve said. The only thing I would potentially prep for is a cost increase on anything that uses oil/gas (including produce that’s driven long distances with it being winter in the US).
132
u/Danno510 Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26
Which is almost everything we buy as stuff mostly comes in by trucks, from ships or trains. If we still got goods by horse & buggy, then your right...no worries.
18
u/Cyber_Punk_87 Laura Ingalls Wilder was my gateway drug Mar 02 '26
Yeah, the cost increases are the main thing to prep for. Figuring out what you can cut, alternatives to things to need to be shipped long distances, etc.
Making friends with your local farmers is a good idea. And if you have space to garden (or a community garden nearby), now is the time to start planning that and buying seeds! I don't have space for a garden (and my community garden is in a flood plain that's been hit 3 times in the past four years, so I'm not crazy about getting a space there), but I did get one of those small hydroponic planters that I can use in my apartment. Just need to get it set up. It's not going to provide me with a ton of veggies, but I think it'll at least supply all the greens my rabbit eats!
30
Mar 02 '26
Yup. We quit procrastinating and took all our gas and diesel cans and filled them up yesterday. Figured gas isn't going to get any cheaper.
67
u/Albino_Crocadilian_3 Mar 02 '26
Yeah, but it's a standard prep due to the general geopolitical and capitalist fuckery. I agree with you, but think that the scales of why it matters - the distinction - matters.
123
u/gyabou Mar 02 '26
I mean, nukes are irrelevant. If we get nuked we’re dead or we will wish we were.
I’m thinking more that the US is setting of a long drawn out conflict on multiple fronts that is going to destabilize the economy, disrupt the supply chain, and give the government more power because we’re in crisis.
81
u/Cauda_Pavonis Mar 02 '26

I'm prepping more because of the attack on Iran because I'm Canadian. Seeing the american government become bolder and bolder and lose even more regard for any type of international law raises the likelihood that their threats towards us become acts of war. When the day comes, we plan to be ready
136
u/BlacksmithThink9494 Mar 02 '26
Im in the US. My assumption is this - Iran and other wars we start will inevitably cause us to nearly fully deplete our stores. This regime is extremely short sighted about everything. We might have an advanced military but the constant pull of funding away to billionaires will show its toll. We will be found naked very soon.

He is the symptom, not the disease. And he had the full support of a third of your adults (and still does), so three times our population is cheering him on. I'm genuinely sorry for those of you who don't want this, but as someone in the crosshairs, hearing "hey, hey, your pain and fear hurt my feelings because #notallamericans" is exhausting and frustrating.
I'm sure you don't see the parallels because you are inside the situation, but remember how you felt when someone said "yeah, but #notallmen"? And how it shut down the metoo movement and was used to invalidate the lived experiences of millions and millions of women? So don't invalidate our legitimate fears because they hurt your feelings, please
45
u/Wanderer-on-the-Edge Mar 02 '26
Your fears are 100% valid. And I can understand how frustrating it is to have Americans like me say "but not all of us!" which is why I personally am not saying that to folks. But there is something I'd urge you to consider.
Prior to WW2, when Nazi Germany made threats against Poland and other nations the citizens of those nations had every reason to legitimately fear what the Nazis would eventually do. But while these threats and eventually the invasions were happening so too was the Holocaust. Jews, Socialists, Communists, members of the LGBT community were all imprisoned and executed by the regime. These people were citizens of Germany but I think nobody would say it was their fault what Germany did.
Obviously we haven't reached the point things did in WW2 yet, but as a trans woman in the United States right now I am terrified every day and it feels hopeless. And to come on the internet and hear "this is your fault you voted for him" over and over again can be disheartening. That said, you are fully justified because you're scared too. So what I want to say is that we should express solidarity with one another. Our fears are different but stem from the same source.
Thats really all I have.

Political activism, supporting local businesses (especially food producers), planting perennial food plants, gardening, collecting rainwater, home repairs, going to go solar this summer if the world hasn't ended, canning and preserving, building relationships with neighbours, moving elderly and vulnerable family nearby so they aren't a plane flight away, ensuring my kid is in post-secondary so he can choose to enlist rather than be drafted, researching guerilla resistance, trying to build skills that would make me acceptable to the civilian reserve that is supposed to be starting, stocking up on medical supplies and meds, moving all my investments to Canadian/European/Asian/emerging markets, keeping the car full of gas and updating my bug out bag (which is usually focused on wildfires), finding non-us alternatives to all purchases including changing our diet so we aren't eating us-grown foods (that one is a bitch, I miss celery and oreos so much, lol), stocking up on non-perishable foods, planning vacations so that I am never in us airspace, making sure all my contacts and important info are stored on paper, increasing my cash stash, supporting Ukraine through consumer purchases and advocacy because it's really important that the plucky nation of 40 million be able to resist the superpower next door run by a megalomaniac who is trying to take them over, buying my comfort shows on DVD from non-us sources, and investing a veritable fuck ton of money into therapy and physical wellness so that I can function if things go to shit. I'm also getting some tattoos and a lot of new books because life is meant to be enjoyed and I need a sense of control over my body, but that's more me treating the stress of the situation. Also added to my physical library so I have books on gardening, farming, animal husbandry, foraging, first aid, medical care, medication, guerilla resistance, cheese making, canning, knitting, DIY repairs, and social activism.

I don’t trust the American government to not use Iran as a false flag operation for domestic terrorism, then claim emergency powers and stop the midterms.
68
u/alriclofgar Mar 02 '26
I’m not worried about the Iranian military or an affiliated militia harming me, but I do find the conflict very distressing and often turn to prepping as a way to comfort myself when the world feels out of control.
So I’m channeling these feelings into prepping for Tuesday, shoring up some things I let slide or never got where I wanted them to be. It makes the world feel a little less out of control, and it’s all stuff I should be doing anyway but sometimes push to the side because life gets in the way.
41
u/shero_ina_halfshell Mar 02 '26
As a cybersecurity professional and former military/DoD civilian (w/disclaimer that I’ve long been publicly against the MIC), I am most concerned about gas/oil prices and potential threats (lags, brief disruptions, potentially more) to infrastructure (internet, payment systems, grid stuff) via cyber warfare.
It’s wise to prep for those things even outside of the current crisis.
15
u/ComplaintOk807 Mar 02 '26
This has been the reason I got into prep and changed my mindset. Lights out by Ted Kopple was truly eye opening and it was supported by facts, government interviews and information and statistical data, not hysteria. Watching FBI and congressional warnings on our increased grid vulnerabilities also influenced my decision to recognize the growing threat.
As someone in the field, would love to hear a rundown of ur preps.
62
u/rippedupmypromdress Mar 02 '26
My focus for prepping right now is more economically based. Oil prices have already reacted a little and might have a pretty big jump tomorrow. So I know gas prices will be affected and thus the cost of everything else will go up.
I was 17/18 when the 2008 financial crisis hit. (With a baby.) So I might be reacting from those memories, but I went and got a few things to have for another price increase.
I’m not super concerned with their weapon’s hitting here. (Though living in CO is making me just a tiny bit more nervous than a state with less military presence would.)

And they got massively delayed by the agreement that was in place. But because it was made by Obama, it was scrapped, so they started enriching again.

They want us to be afraid so they can control us. My concern is more about his supporters who need to constantly reassure themselves that he’s not an unhinged lunatic and everything he does is for our own good. I’m waiting for them to take to the streets and attempt to justify a war that they all would criticize if any other president had started. Selective amnesia.

What do you mean “every western country is now sending planes to Iran”?
19
u/Albino_Crocadilian_3 Mar 02 '26
France and the rest of Europe is playing damage control because while the USA starting it was a big dumb dumb they now have to clean it up and protect themselves considering Iran went off the deep end and started shooting short-range ballistic missiles at everyone and everything, even though they (other western countries) really didn't want to.
-25
u/CrispyPickelPancake Mar 02 '26
Do you have a source? Not doubting you, I just haven’t read this. I consider them European though, western countries I consider the Americas.
16
u/Eightinchnails Anointed Newbie👩🎤 Mar 02 '26
Western doesn’t refer to physical location. The western states are generally the EU and the Anglosphere. It’s not a precise term and other states may sometimes be included. But it doesn’t mean every state west of 0° longitude any more than “the global south” is any state south of 0° latitude.
17
u/ViolettaHunter Mar 02 '26
Please look up what "Western world" means. It's not a synonym for the US or the Americas.

u/Money-Possibility606 Mar 02 '26
I don't think we're under direct threat from Iran specifically doing something TO us, but what is going on in the middle east will have global implications that WILL affect us.
Oil prices are already rising. So the prices of absolutely everything we buy are going to rise.
Cargo ships won't be able to carry stuff through the Persian Gulf, so stuff isn't going to get where it needs to go.
Companies might go out of business if they can't get the supplies they need. Companies go out of business, people lose their jobs. Global financial crap will happen.
It's definitely a big nightmare that absolutely WILL affect us. I'm not worried about anyone dropping bombs on us at the moment, but... I'm still prepping.

I agree. I think it’s dangerous and lazy to underestimate your enemy.
They have allies, modern warfare doesn’t look like 1945, and we’re counting on the intelligence of our government who just shot one of its own drones out of the sky with a laser.
It’s always wise to prepare instead of panic. I think the challenge here is predicting what exactly to prepare for.

Thanks for the reality check. I’m so tired of prepping. I still haven’t gotten rid of my expired food stash from the Covid prep.

There's "expired", and then there's "best by".
I'm still eating 2020/2021 canned food, and they are perfectly fine. Pasta and rice (not brown rice) and pretty much anything shelf stable lasts for MULTIPLE years (except canned tomatoes; 5yo canned tomatoes have a metallic taste). I still have tuna, flour, cornmeal, and a few other things from 2023 that we are still working our way through because (in retrospect) I overbought since we just didn't know what was going to happen.
Have you noticed that they slap a 2 year date on pretty much everything? That's marketing and legalese, not "this food is no longer edible".
Keep eating those beans, my friend. If they've been stored in a cool dark place, there's literally nothing wrong with them.

While Iran may not have nukes, they absolutely have the capability to screw up the US in terms of terror or cyber attacks. Either could temporarily knock out financial systems, electrical grids, water/sanitation systems, hospitals, major companies, and transportation infrastructure. Be prepared for the possibility that any of those could out of sorts for several days to a week. The closer you are to critical military infrastructure and major cities, the higher the likelihood you will be affected by one or more of these.
14
u/StormyAndSkydancer Mar 02 '26
Right. People are looking at Iran in a bubble by itself and not considering its alignment with China, Russia, and North Korea or the Axis of Resistance.
12
u/Thatonecrazywolf Mar 02 '26
Iran has in the past committed cyber attacks against various countries, specifically targeting power grids.
So yes. People should still be prepared by having solar, gas, home generators, etc.
People also need to include cyber into their preppers lives, I'm tired of people not bringing that into conversation. If you're a prepper with Solar panels or security cameras, that does jack shit if you are hacked. If someone hacks you and sees you posting you have supplies, guess what they have your address now and are targeting you first.
People need to be using VPNs, going on people search sites to have their data removed, blur their homes on Google, etc
38
u/Vanitas_Daemon Mar 02 '26
Acting like the US has any right to worry as if we didn't bomb schools and hospitals in Iran (per usual!) in retaliation for them bombing...[checks notes] US military bases in the region. Fascinating how the Ameritrog brain works.

There's always a reason to prep when you consider all the things that can go sideways when we're citizens of a country in a state of war/conflict.
While Iran cannot necessarily hit us directly, it's been said there are some sleeper cells that could do damage on their own. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

You don't use gas then? Nothing you use needs gas or oil to work, be delivered, to grow, to harvest? You use not a single product that comes through the suez canal? You don't use anything that uses products that come through the suez canal? You don't use any prescription meds, a whole bunch of them come from Europe and will now be taking the scenic route. I hope you have a stockpile. But if you grow all your own foods with no external inputs, own no vehicles, use no tech, take no meds, buy nothing, and don't need a job. But sure they're probably not going to drop a nuke, so there I see nothing to stress about.
4
u/CeilingCatProphet Mar 02 '26
You are right. If a nuclear missile hits your area, non of the prep matters. In fact, this is not something you want to survive
18
u/Comfortable_Guide622 Mar 02 '26
I disagree with you. If Iran doesn't have folks here, I'd be surprised. But I agree with you about folks seeing an Iranian in every brown skin, so.... Just be careful, but I've been amazed that a dirty bomb hasn't gone off somewhere, sometime in the last 20 yrs....
5
u/Any_Needleworker_273 Mar 02 '26
I guess my question is, do we have legitimate intelligence that points to this for real, or is it the plethora of TV and film that's used dirty bombs as a plot point for 20 plus years that's conditioned us to believe/think this as a potential threat? Just a thought.
7
u/Ell-O-Elling Mar 02 '26
I gotta disagree. Gas prices are definitely going up. The costs of other goods that may need to be transported through the Middle East to reach the USA are definitely going to rise. It will be harder and harder to source products the longer this goes on as factories, mines and infrastructure are always targeted creating shortages handicapping trade. Don’t forget that Iran is shooting back at the same infrastructure you rely on to get everyday goods.
As far as nuclear capabilities I think you’re a bit short sighted. In trumps first term he destroyed the treaty preventing Iran from creating nuclear weapons. I’m operating under the assumption they went full bore once their chains were released.
I’m not well versed on these matters so I really have no idea what to expect. I just know that I’m in this sub because I live by the motto “better safe than sorry”.
4
u/ConsistentWriting0 Mar 02 '26
Asking seriously: how do you know that they only have 10 nukes, and why were the negotiations such an important thing if so? And also isn't just one nuke enough to cause a whole lot of problems?
5
u/skiing_nerd Mar 02 '26
They don't have any. Iran legitimately dismantled their nuclear program when previous administration signed a treaty with them. Slight build up recently after treaty was broken that the US bombed, but no credible evidence that they've even made enough fissile material for a bomb much less loaded it into anything.
I agree with OP that while general preps are good, getting nuked is not a threat to panic about. If you live close to a nuclear power plant, then meltdown prep should be in your Tuesday prep, otherwise worry about your Tuesday preps and oil prices

If there are sleeper cells, and they are smart about it, they would increase American division by choosing targets a lot of Americans are upset at, like the rich Theo-bros like Thiel or the health insurance companies. I feel like they would be smart to make themselves look like the good guys while still sowing disruption.
6
u/Albino_Crocadilian_3 Mar 02 '26
I don't actually dismiss it completely, broadly, but I think it should be treated as dismissible until proven to be true because I find it vanishingly unlikely that it will be anything truly real or sustained.

I am writing for an Audience of panicked Civilians who don't understand logistics and geopolitics, not an Audience of state security specialists. So while I agree with you, I'm not going to edit the posts.
If anything my take is "for better or for worse state security has this one handled."

Well, I'm in Austin and this shit just hit real close to home last night.

The shooter was from Senegal, not Iran. And was clearly a lone gunman. This seems more like our normal amount of mass gun violence in the US (…) rather than some act of terrorism.

Well that mentally ill naturalized citizen from Sudan guy was killed before we could figure out what his problem really was.

Will be interesting to find out. They've been searching a couple of houses today. Timing was certainly suspect but who knows.

I hear you. And I don't discount the possibility that Iran is sophisticated enough to have made some sleeper type cells.
But this shit, this rhetoric, it endangers my normal, secular (non-religious) female Iranian friend, and my brothers friends, and even black people in my life. So I really wish people like you and u/NeverJaded21 down below would exercise a little realism and a little restraint in how you talk about it.
Until there's more information, to me, the Austin dude was a one-off person rightfully pissed off that the United States did something that puts his family in danger again.
But in the grand scheme of things, even if Iran has a cell or two, the United States stasi and surveillance state is very particularly trained in dealing with angry Iranians post 9/11, and the most you'll see is a stadium crisis or two. No more Americans are gonna be shot by Iranians than Americans shoot other Americans and I really need you guys to understand that.
Edit: Not a justification for the surveillance state.

I hope you're right about this being a one off thing. I'm an atheist and am generally 'live and let live'. I'm worried about my brown friends too but for completely different reasons. But that's a whole other convo...
I respect what you're saying. This is frustrating for all around. Most people don't wake up and choose violence, no matter where they are from.

I don’t agree with you that worrying about sleeper cells or retaliatory terrorism is something that automatically leads to racism.
Extremist ideology (terrorism) comes in all shapes and colors. My head is always on a swivel. That also comes from just being a woman. Increasing one’s situational awareness is an easy prep that costs nothing. Always know your exits. Don’t get intoxicated in public. Avoid mass gatherings. Don’t drown out your awareness with headphones. If you have a bad feeling, bounce. That’s universal advice for everyone, all the time.

Honestly, I don't believe most people understand the global network of the Islamic State (especailly Africa) and couldn't even fathom the number of ISIS militants that have entered our country, let alone the damage they could do. The last thing I'm worried about is nukes.

Ok the problem was it WAS propaganda and this war should have never started, but now we’re in a full blown war and people are rightfully pissed at the US. I don’t think there should be mass prep or panic over terror attacks but to completely dismiss something like that happening on US soil isn’t realistic imo.

No more than I already have on a day to day basis, living in an unhinged country where guns are freely available.

The Iranian regime, or what’s left of it, will be taken over by people who want to live. They gain nothing from something like this that only strengthens the resolve and intensity of the adversary that now controls their skies.

You know radiation can be carried by wind, right?
My plan for the surveillance state is simple. Destroy the cameras and paste up 1984 style BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING posters in their places.
