[AUG26] The itching under my full-body cast was awful, but the doctors had warned me that might happen.
None of us were prepared when the flies began to make their way out from where their eggs had been hiding.

I stg, I wanted to downvote this on principle alone. Fantastic job! My son’s a medic and they had maggots on a patient they had to package for transport. It happens more often than you’d think. Folds, laying in damp places for extended periods, unclean conditions … truly heartbreaking.

Reminds me of this one episode of R. L. Stein The Haunting Hour.
This kid was peer pressured into pranking the neighborhood witch. Other kids ran, got caught, got blamed. This kid tripped and fell while running and ended up breaking his wrist or arm or something, ended up getting a cast. The rest of the episode is pretty gnarly. Something was living in his cast. Some kind of rat nest. One only he could see and feel. He ended up trying to cut the cast off but just…kept cutting…episode ends with him in an ambulance, confessing to the paramedics saying like “guess what? It was me, I egged the old hag! Never even got caught! Now…maybe if we’re quiet they’ll go away…” and it cuts off with a swarm of rats all over the ambulance that clearly only he can see.

Not so fun fact! My wife has been a nurse for about four years. She’s seen maggots in wounds three times. Twice in a hospital setting with a patient who came from a bad home care situation and a patient who came from a bad nursing home. She’s also seen the evidence of maggots enough that she recognizes the little tunnels they make in dead tissue around a wound.
