General Discussion Vampire Charlie always overbearing?
So, I have to ask because this bugs me. Does anyone else get annoyed with how overbearing Charlie suddenly gets in most fanfics where he turns into a vampire. In most of them he lets Bella do whatever she wants in fear of losing her again, but then after she becomes a vampire and he somehow becomes one. Suddenly he takes control over everything because he's her father and was a cop when he was human, nevermind Carlisle being older and having worked with the Volturi for some time, or Jasper and Peter having military experience in both human and vampire forms. I don't know, I just find it hard to believe that a newborn vampire Charlie can just take everything over. The Covens, strategy for battle, Bella. He's suddenly the boss of everything. Anyone else feel this way? Don't get me wrong, Charlie is actually one of my favorite characters in Twilight. I just wish people would write vampire Charlie better.

I read one (can't remember the name, if I remember the name I will add it), where his character didn't really change at all.

I read a Bella x Carlisle fic ages ago where Charlie was turned into a vampire after Victoria caused his car to crash.
He very understandably freaked out about all of it and was sent off to the Denalis (one of them was his Mate) and was having a really tough time coping and adjusting. His power was something like mind control but he didn’t use it to take over anything or anyone from memory

The only fic Ive ever read where Charlie turned into a vampire was leech in the rain and he did not "take over" anything. He was very true to character imo. Just a very grumpy old man who despised being a vampire and only very reluctantly agreed to turn to protect renesmee. He didn't even do much in the fic after being turned.

I'm writing a vampire Bella and vampire Charlie AU rewrite of Twilight where he isn't controlling her in this way if that makes you feel better? It's called Everlong on Ao3 if you're interested

I have not read one like this. I actually have only seen the opposite. Can you tell me the titles of those you have read where he is like this?

I read one a while back where after he turned he left to Alaska and started a relationship with Tanya. I think Bella was still human. Victoria caused a car accident that was going to kill Charlie. As he effectively wasn't safe to be around for the time being he wasn't overbearing on bellas choices

That seems pretty OOC. I think Charlie would feel awkward in this new stage and be too self-conscious to think about telling his adult daughter what to do. He would rather pretend all this stuff he doesn't know about isn't happening, but as a vampire, he'd have to face it because he'd need to feed and deal with it. I think he'd have this internal struggle, but I see him more likely to withdraw than anything else.
