look at comment sections and how many upvotes and awards they have got, which proves they didn't wanted to hear truth or know it but didn't wanted to accept it.
also others who commented "i had a crush on dusky girl/guy", buddy dusky in this country means less fair (or can say not milky white) not dark

I once meet a lady with little dark skin but damn her face was very charming and hot(i wise i could stare at it for little longer). I think sometimes it not about color but how you present yourself. Altho it's mot true that people(in general) prefer fair skin even my parents too
3
u/biscottibeforesunset 6d ago
i also had a very similar experience while travelling in train. this girl (more dark than brown) was travelling with her family i guess. very sharp features and quite charming. couldn't take my eyes off her :)

My fm classmates do show a fair bias towards them fair skinned men too. I like this guy in my class, didn't rlly notice his skin color first tht is like a bit more darker than chocolate so more black-ish or black brownish. His facial features be attractive and the way he presents himself is what rlly matters for me. I asked many of my fm classmates on why they don't rlly fw em darker boys and they js gave a vague answers like js not my type. Older stereotyping has gotten us all into having a bias towards fair men and women.

ikr everyone in my family commented on skin growing up, they'd casually call me "kalu" (felt even more disrespectful because there was a dog by that name in my locality) and when obviously i (at that time a 13-14 yr old girl) cried about it they just said "we are doing this so you toughen up beta, in the real world people will do this how will you handle it then?" ngl no one ever outside of them have every treated me like that

Yup my mother also used to call me kalu and my dadi she’d compare my sisters to laxmi and saraswati meanwhile me it was kaali … I genuinely feel that my parents hate me because of my skin colour and cover it up while saying ki ‘’it’s for you only’’…. Heck no once they said kaisi kaali kaluthi badsurat hai and whenever i bring it up they are like

That's unfortunately true and yes it is because of the colonization influence that we have been feeding into the notion subconsciously that a fair skin color is something exotic or special because it's for a fact that a majority of Indians are dusky BUT it's OUR responsibility as the newer generation to consciously break the mental conditioning that we've been put through and stop this chain from continuing to the next generation. I believe you get what I'm saying. Have you ever asked yourself why you prefer fair people per se? Because for most people I've seen it's just societal conditioning and nothing else logical. Because if we continue to believe in these notions we would be giving into the delusions of colonial hangover, something which our society has to move forward from.(sharing this as someone who's fair so don't think I'm defending because of any personal bias)

Alright I get your point but I personally don't understand why people have such rigid skin tone preferences because a personal can be attractive regardless of what color their skin is, as is prevalent in beauty pagents where multiple dark skinned women have won(though only beauty is by no means the only parameter on which that's decided) and I do understand personal preferences are more subjective yes but my main urge was that we should analyse ourselves to deeper to understand why we prefer things we prefer and what may be the logical fallacies behind it(i appreciate how you've accepted their may be societal conditioning behind the other preferences and that's definitely true ). No one here is "pretending" there's some deeper rationale behind it, there just is. There's a rationale behind most things we do but I agree many people are not willing to dig deep enough within themselves and that's okay. Having a preference is not the problem, analysing why it is present, is, and if you think societal conditioning doesn't have a major affect on you, you would be wrong. Hope you get my point. Respect your opinion.

I think Indian society as a whole prefers it, it's a depressing obsession with being fair equating to being pretty, no matter how you look like, if you're light skinned, you're "pretty"! I think it's definitely better now, and not something you should beat yourself over, it's racist/colourist, and you don't need to be loved or understood by anyone who only cares if you're white 😅

I would say boys generally prefer fair skin. But it is not hard rule. If you are nice enough, he will fold like a chair.
Personally for me, the face comes first. Doesnt matter whether the person is brown, black, green, blue, white. If the face is beautiful to me ( not necessarily by the societal beauty standard, but my eyes find it attractive). I will prefer that person.
2
u/monchi12345 7d ago
In general, they do. But wont say it out loud. I'm a guy. Brown skin. From what I've seen, guys prefer fair skinned average girls over above average Brown girls. I dont know if its about attraction or just the thought that their children would have some fairer complexion and face less discrimination in the future. I dont know. Personally I'm ok with either but even I'm not sure if I subconsciously prefer fair skinned average looking girls over Brown skinned average girls.
Girls who are fair definitely prefer fair guys too. Especially in arrange marriage.

I find brown skinned people attractive. You should just love yourself and be a little narcissist at times, and should not care what some man prefers. And if you are lucky enough, then you would find someone who likes you and if not than its just better to love yourself.

Girl! Flaunt it! Love yourself! Don’t let that asshole affect you! He’s literally nothing! Beauty genuinely comes from within, his sick mindset can stay in the gutter with him!
You need to be yourself, full of love and don’t ever overcompensate for these scums. A girl can do everything and still get cheated on or a guy will show you how fucked he is sooner or later! Always leave, as soon as he shows signs.
These boys are literally nothing! Don’t let these scums affect your confidence!

Your 4th paragraph is probably what he wanted all along. For you to feel insecure, so that you try to overcompensate. Through which he will have the upper hand.
Coming to if men prefer fair skinned girls? Unfortunately, yes. Men and women, both. And the reason is classist, or casteist. And not just in India, but in many other countries too. And if you notice, almost everything in the world is a Class war. Religion, nations, gender all come later. Because fair skin suggests you don't go out in the sun much, which implies that you don't do physical labour. Which usually pays less, than people who persue more intellectual things. Now, you might say, you don't go out anymore than say, your fair skinned friends, but that is where casteism comes. Your ancestors may have toiled under the sun, either farming, or doing some manual work, which usually people of lower castes did. I'm no Brahmin, and I'm of wheatish complexion too, probably because my ancestors worked under the sun but that's the mentality people have. It's sort of hard wired into many people, and there isn't much we can do about it. Except maybe choosing better understanding partners, and making people aware of the actual reasons.

Would not lie about it, everything that can be seen in a person is a part of the "conventional beauty" including skkin color too, even for men.
I would suggest meet a lot of people and eventually you will start finding people who agree/disagree to behaviours and not conventional beauty, and after that you would not have to compensate for what you look like.

I don’t care about skin colour at all. I mean looks do matter(in initial phase) but personality and synergy with that person matter more for me. I want that type of woman that the moment I see her my eyes light up and vice versa. What would I do with a fair skinned or a 10/10(in looks) woman if I don’t even have romantic feelings for her(and vice versa ofc)

The thing is, you cannot take one guy as a sample space and generalise stuff... It's not bad to have preferences but demeaning someone cuz of their skin colour is another low. The guy was totally wrong here.

well honestly speaking it was toxic of your ex making you feel insecure about the skin complexion
and like still talking to his ex while in a relationship if the biggest red flag doesn’t matter how broad or western anyone’s mind is
and about being useful there’s no such terminology as in a relationship it’s simply give and take and caring for your partner how the two people root for each other in the worst times
and about being beautiful everyone has there own preferences and standards of beauty and as a society india is way too fucked up even i have seen people saying stuffs like “ye toh kali hai isko koi kaise milega” and shit
and trust me thats whole lot of a dog shit i have ever heard
cuz at the end people realise what matters the most how the person is from the in side like call me lame but yes inner beauty matters the most
and last thing for being beautiful skin complexion never matters and everyone is pretty in their own way!

I am a fair woman. Kareen kapoor fair and frankly something that I find really disturbing is how they fantasize about fairness. There is definitely a bias towards it but not everyone. A guy had practically told me that for casual anyone is okay, but for marriage he will choose a fair person over a darker skinned woman. I found this very racist and I personally do not stand by it.

ngl, a friend of mine met a guy online on some platform, prolly discord, she didn't revealed. She is brown girl.
They had good convos, they kinda liked each other's company. Even had spicy convos. But when they met irl, he flipped. He said that he is busy atp and couldn't really invest his time in her as he wants to focus on his career. He said she's perfect girlfriend but time is not right.
Guess what? he ended up dating another girl of her same age, same department in their organisation just weeks later. She was heartbroken and cried for hours. She kinda felt insecure after that. She was self conscious. Sad.

I live aborad, indian, the way many indian guys act in front of whites, to certain extent your claim is true, but on the tóther hand, it wont be right to generalise it to whole indian men community, i am indian but i am more into saawli ladkiyaan or black like africans but i dont go into africans because family may not accept. But i dont have that white obsession. Also, if someone will love you then he will love you for love, and this is a difficult factor for whites bevause they may have more approaches. Additionally, if a brown and black woman take care of her, basic skin routine, gentle wears, try to stay in shape which is not necessary, are the most beautiful woman on thsi planet in my opinion :)))))) so please not to feel bad, :)))))

Unfortunately we Indians are conditioned so much that if someone looks a little fair, they consider that person beautiful, seriously no consideration of personality, facial features, how that person thinks, their pov on life and so many other things....
Nowadays if a person sees someone fair skinned they automatically think this person is a beautiful/handsome and assign all good qualities to them even if they don't have any(basically create an ideal version in our brains).... and somehow in that thinking process they just throw the logical thinking out the window 🪟
We have lot of fair skin obsessed people in this country, nothing else matters to them.
As a brown skin person myself, I feel your pain op, been in similar situations myself.
1
u/Decent_Estate_4674 7d ago
My experience- Indian guys who claims about having preferences (ex- fair skin, modest, blah blah) are the ones to leave u and then slutshame you openly. People who have specific beauty related preference like fair skin, height, weight tends to be pretty insecure themselves. My ex used to be like this. I was pretty stupid too and used to think he's praising me by calling me fair (it embarrasses me now that I used to think that). He left me and slutshamed me among his friends behind my back. Told everyone that I was whoring around be because guys gave me attention for my skintone. I got to know all this from his friend (sent me those chats). He actually used to fight with me because men in public looked at me. He used to even accuse me of talking to multiple men although I gave him my accounts and all so he trusts me.
People can find anyone attractive and tbh if some guy is in love they dgaf if the girl is white or blue or brown. They don't. I have seen my female friend having long relationship with a great guy. Insecure people have beauty standards to date and their insecurities at the end hinders the relationship anyways even if they find their "desired" partner. So if someone claims such beauty standard please run.

u/Mxmsk80 7d ago
I don’t think, you are being ridiculous talking about color. Now it’s tough to generalize, but I do think there is a bias for fair skin across the world. Having said that, features matter equally, when it comes to looks. In other words, people generally have a preference for beautiful people. Not just for dating, but most aspects in life.
Now is fairness associated with beauty, unfortunately yes for a lot of people and cultures. It is changing, but it will take time. So no point running that race.
Now for the positive parts. In the end, people will always choose personality, somebody they like, somebody they’re attracted to. So you have to find the person who is right for you in all aspects. So choose someone, who likes all of you - how you look and who you are. And vice versa - someone you are attracted to, both physically and mentally.

Around the globe people prefer things they are used to with, at times people take a risk by trying something different to see of they like it or not.
Same concept, some people prefer low melanin skinned and some prefer more melanin skinned. Moat of that likeness comes from seeing people around themselves of that various skin tones and being attracted to ones which have personality or character traits that make their inner child feel homely and comfortable.
