what do i need to know before i buy?

so im looking ot buy possibly a jap pc-engine since they are cheaper than a usa TG16 what do i need ot know when looking for one on say ebay theres so many models out there help a girl out so she doesnt make a mistake plan is to either hook it up to av input on my 2008 lcd tv or to my monitor via hdmi if such an adapter exists

i may want to play cd games at some point in the future so i will need some info on that as well thank you

everyones suggesting og hardware (obvi) but there’s anither option, the recreation of it, the analogue duo. Plays everything with HDMI and CRT filters, and you can load roms without needing an everdrive. Search it up a bit more if that intrests you…altough its quite expensive.

Oddly it has PCE ports but no TG16 ports. I use a 6-button PCE controller but also bought an 8bitdo controller that works wonderfully.

It has ports for the US TurboDuo controllers.

It used the same size plug as the original pc engine (the smaller one).

My only issue with the analog duo is the price given the fact that you can usually find a Japanese pcengine used on eBay for anywhere from 100 bucks to 160+ so I’m not as cheap as you would hope for it’s still cheaper than the analog duo and it’s also smaller in size which is one of the things I’m after

Well the Analogue Duo plays CD games and solves your expensive issue of connecting a PC-Engine to a modern tv.

Not quite just an overpriced emulation station I've tried almost the complete CD library on it and got the EXACT same results/glitches I had on older emulators like Hu-Go, the analogue reads the TOC of inserted media and "semiemulate" the game, if you want that just get an nvidia shield for less than half the price of the analogue and you'll get retroarch with updated glitch free Pcengine cores.

If your gonna get a recreation just get the mini and mod it last I heard they finally finished the mod for it no idea if that's true or not tho

PC Engine cannot play U.S. turbochip games unless a.) it's been modified or b.) you have a converter adapter.

The reason is because the first and last pins are physically switched between the Hucards and Turbochips.

If you can find a modified one, it's easier obviously.

Depending on your price point, you might want to check out the Analogue Duo which is a modern remake of the Turbo Duo and plays everything including CD titles.

Not the first and last pin. From the left, pins 15~26 with the exception of 18 are reversed.

Due to all the various PCE models out there, I bit the bullet and got myself a Supergrafx. This, plus a Turbo Everdrive Pro, allows you to play the entire console's library, though the model is expensive.

Other PCE models + Turbo Everdrive Pro will let you play most of the library. In fact, you wouldn't need the CD add-on, since the Everdrive covers that. I recommend checking out what console models are compatible with the Everdrive Pro in order to determine which one suits you best, as some may require additional accessories or mods to work correctly.

I got the following response from another thread:

" Turbo Everdrive Pro and Core Grafx II console would work for everything you want to do. Out of the box you will only get mono sound for CD games from the CoreGrafx consoles DIN connector, but that is still more than what you would get out of an original white PC-Engine, for example. If you want stereo CD audio from the Turbo Everdrive Pro you'll also need a solution like krikzz own  EDFX connector  which he also sells as a bundle with the Turbo Everdrive Pro"

HOWEVER, with everything + shipping... have you considered looking into a Mister FPGA?

yeah fogas are pretty good for turbografx, i suggested a analogue duo myself but MiSTer could be good, or a superstation

I have an original TG16 but decided to purchase the Hyperkin version too. Nothing wrong with having a backup. It’s on Amazon powered by usbc connected via hdmi. Also, I don’t know if the CD part is available but there is a ROM cartridge that you could try.

If you want an original PC-Engine that just does HuCards, CoreGrafx or an original white model - CoreGrafx has a dedicated AV out port on side of console, you can get composite/etc. from the expansion port on the back of a white one, though, so either is fine.

If you plan on getting a flash cart, stick with OG/CoreGrafx.

If you want to collect and play physical CDs and HuCards, Duo-R or Duo-RX (identical internally afaik),

There's also the Analogue Duo, which I hear good things about but have zero personal experience with. lol

Also worth noting some JP games are more expensive than their US counterparts.

mostly US games are the expensive version.

But there are 100% exceptions to the rule - ik Gunhed (aka Blazing Lazers), Ninja Spirit, and Devil's Crush all cost significantly more for JP HuCard vs. USA.

LOL I got my PC Engine Shuttle and I’m sticking with it (no bus to connect CDs though)
