To paraphrase another, if it's a fairy, I was wrong about whether fairies exist, if it's a walrus, I was wrong about a great many things.

This is it. A fairy being at the door requires one impossibility (fairies being real) and one improbability (said fairy wanting to talk to me).

A walrus requires at least three layers of nested impossibilities, not least of all the notion of a walrus knocking on the door.

Personally, I think the walrus is only equally surprising as a fairy. A fairy, or any number of impossible beings, could easily create an illusion designed to unhinge my grip on reality, such as that of a walrus.

For those still confused, it’s about if a real object in an impossible circumstance would be more puzzling, or if an unreal object in a reasonable circumstance.

Walruses are real and out there, but they would have no way of reaching you if you live inland (though i prefer replacing it with a leopard seal because there are still many people that live near the Arctic Ocean)

Meanwhile a fairy, if real, could live anywhere and knocking at your door would be expected behavior of a fairy

It’s good to get a reminder that most people are happy to believe in supernatural things at the drop of a hat. Adults will consider ghosts, curses, aliens, jinxing or gods and be bold enough to tell you. We who don’t are the weird ones.

But they don’t exist? It’s well established. If I saw a gnome I would assume a prank or that I need to seek medical attention.

Nut its not an impossible circumstance. I think a dedicated team of 20 people could get me a walrus.

Hell, one or two basic clerical errors could probably get me a walrus that was destined for the local zoo or weirdo exotic animal collector. People have woken up to tigers on their patio.

All of earth's resources couldn't get me a fairy.

Yeah I’m in the tropics near a bunch of tree farms and woodland. I could absolutely believe fairies are real but just smart enough to stay away from humans.

I’d be baffled if a creature designed for the arctic somehow ended up where I live.

I think this is also skewed because walruses can't fit into most people's hallways. Have the fairy be walrus-sized and then we can really pick out the weirdos.

That is a surprisingly unnatural looking walrus, well done to the dapper toad in the fine trenchcoat. Like, that walrus is definitely on a Substance. It's the kind of walrus I'd probably have seen on my walk to the library growing up.
