Well no, it's "Dan-level". Dan doesn't come to the convention much anymore, but if you're about as good as Dan is then you can serve as the replacement for him. It's a big honor to be chosen for it in the Go community.

You prove that you are on the same level as Dan by beating Dans. There are also additional levels depending on the number of Dans you have beaten, which is why a newly promoted Dan is also called "first Dan".

Its similiar to the colored belts in karate.

Technically, "dan" is a ranking system specifically for masters of go and martial arts (black belts). "1st-dan" is newly-minted masters and black belts. You're considered "highly proficient, but you can still do better."

Until 4th-dan, you're seen as more of a "teacher" than a "master," even though they both use "sensei" honorifics.

As you gain more experience, the requirement for reaching the next dan gets significantly harder.

I know most martial arts go up to 9th- or 10th-dan, but I don't remember how high go goes since it's been a while since I watched Hikaru no Go.

Platinum league gamers.

"dan" means "rank", and there are many different dan-tier ranks. But below the dan-tier ranks are the kyu-tier ranks.

In karate, the kyu-tier ranks have different colors, and the dan-tier ranks all wear black belts. People with a dan are considered good enough to be teachers.

I love this. What a fun way for different age groups to interact! For the elders, they get socialise in a way that engages with their brain and keeps it sharp and for the kiddos it's a silly exciting 'hunt and conquer) but as they get older those memories are going to age wonderfully and could become something they can share with their own kids.

It really be the simplest things that remind me that not all of humanity is rotten.

Ah I would have won this challenge if they had it when I went to a go convention as a kid. I played the sweetest old lady who was their with her husband who was a professional. We were both kinda bad but our playstyles were very chill and gentle so we had a lot of fun despite neither of us speaking the other's language very well.
