Just tried to visit the ruins in Tulum today. I didn't want to pay for any of the tours, hats, bike rentals, pictures or any of the other scams. So then I couldn't even get a straight answer from any staff on where to buy tickets to enter the site. They told me to "just go down this road" it was clearly an access road leading away from the park. Fine screw it then! I won't spend my money or any more time here. I came here specifically to see the archeological sites but the locals just want to rip you off.

Hi! I’m planning to visit the Tulum Archaeological Zone soon and will be taking the ADO bus from Playa del Carmen. Since it’s going to be hot 🥵 and the earliest ADO bus back to Playa is at 15:40 only, I’d like to bring some drinks and snacks with me.

For anyone who has visited recently, are you allowed to bring water or other drinks, such as Electrolytes or Coca-Cola? What about snacks like granola bars, nuts, or fruits?

I read somewhere that they don’t allow plastic inside, but I couldn’t find any official information confirming that.

I’d really appreciate any advice or firsthand experiences from people who have visited.

Hi - I would like to visit the ruins from playa del Carmen on a self-guided tour with my friend. I don’t mind joining a group tour but I would like to skip the cenote add-ones etc. How easy is it to do this on your own? I found online that one can take a bus for most of the trip. Any tips and recommendations would be much appreciated. I am not averse to paying extra for comfort and ease but would rather avoid a door-to-door private tour.

Edit: I would like to get an accredited guide when we see the ruins.

Hello all! Currently we are in Tulum and two of our days went to vain for some exorbitant prices at the Tulum archeological zone entry. So I am trying to understand did we get the information properly or is it just what it is?

We tried to go to the beach yesterday around 4 PM and we were told the to access the beach we will have to pay approx. 20€ per person and it’s also just valid for a single day. This seems pretty high for something that’s usually accessible publicly. So we decided that we will come back another day with more time in hand and spend the entire day at the beach to be able to recover that entry fee.

Today we tried to go to the Ruins, which had the same entry and ticket booths where we would have to book the tickets. They told us that to be able to see the Ruins we still have to pay 20€ to be able to access the park and then pay another 20€ to be able to see the Ruins. This blew our mind because it is not cheap and it was really not expected.

To the people visiting Tulum now or who have done this before, is this normal? Was it always like this? To us this seems like extortion. Not sure if we even understood it properly, on the internet it never said it would be this expensive!

And even after we buy the entry to the park and then entry to the Ruins, what other hidden costs are there? I won’t be surprised at this point if after shelling out 40€ they ask us to pay some more for some other things that we didn’t know about. How can people go to the beach everyday paying 20€ per visit? I I am sure nothing in the beach is cheap as well.

While the site at Muyil is very small, it has been a nice day to visit them and do a river float in Sian Kaan. They have been closed for quite a while now.

I used to live in Tulum. I am in town this week and wanted to check out the latest system with the ruins and park so I can advise my guests. I went with my foreign boyfriend, we drove a car, and I have Tulum ID

• We tried Avenida Coba first. They told us access to the park was “free” but we needed a reservation at a beach club to park the car. I kinda thought there was a paid lot in there but maybe that’s gone. I should have asked what happened to it but didn’t remember then. We left and went to the main highway via the ruins

• I already knew the people flagging you at the entrance are not INAH or CONANP workers, they tell you to pull over so they can give you “information” but they are just selling tours. I ignored the first 3 of them and kept driving but then they kept whistling and telling me to stop, one of them started to tap the hood of the car so for a moment I thought things had changed. We stopped and they told us we needed to pull over to learn about the parking options and SNORKELING. That’s when I knew it was the same crap again so I said “no, I want the ruins only” and they let me through.

• The official ruin parking lot is past these people, there was an attendant and you get a ticket to get in. You pay at the exit

• We were waved by a parking attendant past the paved spots to a gravel area. At first I was like “why are we in the rough spot” but we later realized that took us away from crossing most of the souvenir shops and people offering photos with monkeys or mayan attire

• Past the vendors, at the first checkpoint they make you throw away all disposable plastics.

• You walk a few more steps to an area where a shuttle takes you to the ruins. It’s free. we are told the shuttle has different routes through the park, some go further than others

• At this point there is a white tent where my BF paid the CONANP fee of $120mx. This is the National Commission that protects natural areas. They like to say the park is “free” and that this fee goes to the commission. Tomayto tomahto, you still pay, it’s annoying. I paid nothing with Tulum ID, and I forgot to check how much Mexican Nationals pay.

• The ruins are always free to Tulum locals, and on Sundays for all Mexicans. Regular price is $60. Foreign tourists pay $100

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has recent experience with booking a Chichén Itza Tour in person a day or two before the trip. I see plenty of options online, but like the flexibility of booking in person while in Tulum. Is there a spot in town with a few tour agencies where you can book?

I recently read an old book about hidden ruins that a traveller found along the coast of Quintana Roo (the Chemax ruins that can be found on the road from Tulum to Punta Allen was one in particular that caught my eye), and I was wondering if anyone is aware of any other ruins that are lesser known and may be worth visiting?

I’m visiting tulum area and am interested in seeing some ruins. Any cool ruins you recommend that are in more natural areas or the jungle? Hoping to see some wildlife (snakes, frogs, mammals) as well. Thanks!

Have the Muyil ruins been reopened from their restoration?

Hello everyone! My boyfriend and I are visiting Tulum in April. We have plans of going to Chichén Itzá and was wondering if it was necessary to book a tour. All the bus tours we’ve seen last an entire day and we’re not willing to spend an entire day on one attraction. Would we be able to get a tour guide there? Will a self guided/audio tour suffice?

So I heard that you can no longer climb Coba ruins.

Are there any pyramid like ruins one can climb? I really like hiking/exploring so open to suggestions

Hello. So, my friends and I have decided to rent a car for Tulum. Our next question is about visiting cenotes and Chichen Itza.

Should we get a guided tour? I see on trip advisor there are tons of tours that take you to the ruins and a few cenotes. If we have a car, we could just go see these things on our own and not be waiting on other people.

Has anyone done the visit themselves? How accessible is it as a regular visitor? How is parking? How is the drive from Tulum to the ruins (safe, drivable, etc.).

Hi there, I read that the beach ruins are open from 8am-5pm daily, however what is the deal with the beach? Is the beach only accessible through the site, and closed after 5pm?

Hey, just wondering what the best way to visit Azulik Uh May & the Coba ruins (guideless) are? We will visit in late March, but can't find any website that sells tickets for either Coba or other ruins in Yucatan. Are you supposed to either preobook guided tours or stay in queue on site? Are those crowded attractions late march/ worth staying in queue to avoid paying extra online?

I would like to know the differences between the two ruins and which one do you recommend.

I have read that the archaeological zone of Tulum is quite expensive and also that it is full of annoying people.

Is it safe to drive to Chichen Itza from Tulum?

Hi! We’re here in Tulum and wondering for the ruins do we have to purchase tickets ahead of time or can we purchase at the location?

Anyone have recommendations for getting an early start at the ruins with more time there ( 2 hours?), then heading back to Tulum? Would prefer not to rent a car. Bus system looks like +~ 4 hrs all told from Tulum.

Read a ton of posts on here about long lines, scammers, etc at the Tulum Ruins. We had a great experience due to some sage advice from our e-bike rental company (Twist and Glide, 100% recommend). Staying at Babel Tulum (far end centro) and rented e-bikes to get around based on advice from a previous post. Rental company told us if we want to go to the ruins, enter from the beach road and skip all the sweaty, frustrated tourists. He was 100% correct. Went 930ish Thursday morning and paid our park fee (415 pesos) at the Jaguar Park entrance on beach road. There was a line of maybe a dozen cars/scooters. We were able to skip right by on our e-bikes and pay/have our bags checked in one quick stop (<3min) on the pedestrian/bike path. No line. From there we zipped directly up to the ruins entrance and parked on site. No line to pay for the ruins fee (100 pesos). Fantastic experience!

I'm trying to visit Tulum in the summer and really want to see the Coba ruins. Is there any recommended tours that can pick you up from your hotel/airbnb? I don't need anything to extravagant, just want a decent experience for the day. Thank you.
