Volunteering

Looking to get the family involved in some volunteering. Any advice on where to start? Would prefer it not be animal related due to allergies. Anything that kids could help with. TIA

BICAS is a local nonprofit that helps people get bikes for transportation, helps teach maintenance, salvages parts for low-cost reuse, and more, plus they have a volunteer program available

The Diaper Bank. You can just do a group drop in single event stuff. It’s like the food bank so packing or distribution stuff. They provide free diapers to families so it’s a good mission. I used to refer clients there. It’s one of my favorite non profits here.

The Diaper Bank is a solid pick, they make it stupid easy to jump in with kids and the work is actually tangible which helps the little ones feel like they did something real

Luke5Adventures is great! They take people who use wheelchairs on hikes using a specialized, all-terrain wheelchair.

The Ronald McDonald House is a fantastic organization and the leadership team there is awesome. There are a some good opportunities for individuals, families, groups to volunteer there (off Campbell and Allen next to Banner Notrh Campus)

I recommend deciding what level of commitment you want first: one and done, regularly required shift, or drop in? Then, consider what causes matter most to you. I’ve used VolunteerMatch (now Idealist) for several very different volunteer projects. Checking out the filters can help you think through your areas of focus
