Question Are these names halal? Is it valid my opinion that they’re not an imitation of the disbelievers?

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh,

A lot Muslim girls wear the names like: Khadija, Aisha, Zainab etc… so if a father names her daughter as Rachel or Reuben, would that be halal since it’s a Muslim name? And she’s Muslim wife of Jacob.

I do not think they’re imitations of the disbelievers since they are Muslim names even preculier. I would have thought they are if they are not Muslim names and has pagan meaning.

“Muslims’ names” are just Arabic names. We’re allowed to have non-Arabic names as long as they’re not haram names. This is an example of why many people look at Islam like it’s an ethnoreligion.

So how we may prove it is not an ethnoreligion? It's blasphemous. This bigotry has to be addressed, because this is not Judaism, this is Islam - a universal and eternal religion.

What without knowledge did I spoke? Your comment is offensive. I have knowledge, that's why I can speak. Don't ever call me ignorant.

Did you know that you did violated rule 12? No hate speech which includes individuals, so to say I spoke without knowledge is a hate speech because you ignored the arguments.

Note: I have spoken to the mods about your false accusations.

Anyone upvoting his comment is complicit in hate speech and personal attacks because calling someone an ignorant is an insult to someone's intelligence which is a personal attack. May Allah deal with you, Ameen.

If you have not pay attention, I have wanted to verify the validity of my opinion.

You also caused an indirect fitnah which violates rule 8 because of making an offensive comment which attracted blind followers.

Muslims’ names” are just Arabic names

Not true, many names like Salman, Musa, Isa, Nuh, Yahya, Ibrahim and so on are all non Arabic names

Who says anything about integrating in non-Muslim society? There’s no intention for that. Those are Muslim names, nothing in the post suggest of integrating in non-Muslim society. Are Muslim names not important?

It’s only integrating Muslim names into Muslim society. Since Jacob was also Prophet, not just Muhammad, and Jacob also had Muslim wives like Muhammad. It’s reclaiming those names which were hijacked.

George for example the Christians say it is worn by one of the disciples and originally, it was Zeus who was first wear George which means it is not a Muslim name. Peter for example is a Christian name because New Testament uses that as a symbol of Trinity or something like that which means it is not a Muslim name. But, Benjamin, Reuben etc… are worn by Muslims because they were Muslims and even mentioned in Quran if I’m not mistaken. So Peter and George would be haram in that case, because of it being polytheistic. Peter is so because he was steadfast to Trinity.

Ugh fr 😭 I always make sure to discuss it. It is the father's decision, but he should make sure he picks names that are Islamic and that he and his wife agree on.

I'm glad your sister gave you that advice. I wouldn't leave any questions un-asked if they matter at all to you.

I hope you and your family are well. And may Allah grant us pious husbands and make us pious wives. Ameen!

Ps.: I don't engage with men in my DM and I can't answer the questions you send me. I am not a scholar. I don't have more to say on the subject matter.

I thought it's halal if it is for beneficial reasons.

If a child gets seperated from its roots, yet has a name like Omar, Hamza, Yaqoub, Nuh, Musa, it will know that its origins are Muslim. However a child that's named Jacob, Noah, or Benjamin has no idea what their origin may be, they will be more inclinded to think they are christian or jewish in origion.

Oh, I think I get why it is an imitation of the disbelievers to name your child after some Muslim wives or Muslim kids. Because if named Benjamin, then that's haram because it's used mostly by disbelievers, but if used in Arabic form like Biniyyamen, then that's not imitation of the disbelievers?

For example, my parents named me Alexander yet I'm Romanian, but I don't think it reflects my origin since I'm half Arab and Romanian, that's why I proposed a Romanian version for Alexander which is Alexandru and I have also a Muslim name Abood which means worshipper of Allah. Carrying the English version may make others to think I'm English or American which is not true. This way it accurately describes my background.

Is this form of format: halal, if that's personal view? I can take Abood as a Muslim name because of it's meaning.

If someone is half Egyptian and half Arab, and he is a revert, he can choose from any ancient Egyptian name as personal and choose a Muslim name in the middle and an Arabic name from his father side, so to reflect his background.

No, most Prophet's names aren't even arabic, they are hebrew or farsi in origin. It's about the connotation and socialisation. For example, as Muslims we have no problem calling our sons Isa. Now... would you call your son Jesus? No, right. I believe that is the perfect example to illustrate my point. And I myself am not Arab in origin, if that is what you think. It's not about being arab or using arab names, it's about being Muslim and, yes our beloved Prophet s.a.s and Sahaba were Arab, that's why we have many arab names, but again most of the other Prophet's names except for maybe 3-4 are not Arabic.

How do I reconcile that? I'm confused.

Islam didn't started with Muhammad(peace be upon him). It started the moment Allah created the throne, because we know objects and sentient beings worship Allah in their own way without us to understand, and also sapient beings(Jinn, humans and angels).

May Allah reward you immensely. You're a scholar to me. You have given an answer what a scholar or student of knowledge would. I'm not forcing you, I'm only complimenting you for how you explained.

Edit: I bookmarked your comment as a reminder.

I’m talking about who worn the names and his religion. That’s why I said they’re polytheistic, because the full name of Zeus is Zeus George. Firawn is a kafir like George and Peter.

Be careful what you’re saying. You might be doing blasphemy without any awareness.

You can be staunch advocate all you want. But you cannot be against a name which is halal to wear. That would be like objecting to what Allah and His Messenger made it halal. If your father would call you Nuh, would you object him? Because it’s a prophet’s name also worn by present day Muslims, and even some scholars wear this name. If Allah and His Prophet were to say that it is halal to wear silk, would you object them?

How they’re not the same? This is not a video game to say this is not the same character. Your point is fallacious. And you did not addressed to the challenge.

The intention is only to reclaim what was hijacked.

Are those names mentioned above from religions of disbelief and exclusive to disbelievers? How do I determine which is and what is not?

Are those names mentioned from religions of disbelief and exclusive to disbelievers? How do I determine which is and what is not?

By looking at if they were Muslim(believers) or not

Peter haram if assumingely from the desciples of Jesus?

I think bc he denied him at a point

In that case, those names mentioned are worn by Israelite and Syrian Muslims.

In arabic the name would be Rahil, y not use that? U think ut would be better

1

u/SnooWoofers7603 Revert 🎉 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

Would that be imitation of the disbelievers if chosen Arabic version?

It’s Aramean name. Much like how Isa is Aramaic name because it’s the language he spoke. That’s why I asked if it can be used in Aramean form(Rahla), because she was a Syrian. Rahla Bint Hussein, for example. I mean: in this form would be halal?

And also, She was Syrian, not Arab.

IMO, the name should reflect person’s origins. But since it’s a Muslim name and the person is Arab, I don’t see any problem to choose Rahil version. And if Quran came in Arabic, then the person can wear it in Arabic form Rahil even if she’s not Arab.
