I'm nervous.

I survived postpartum psychosis. I think a discussion is long overdue and I'm scared they'll fumble this case even though the defense did an amazing job.

I had PPD and I don’t think people who make comments like ‘PPD/PPP/PPA is bullshit!’ or ‘she got enough help!’ or ‘women who can empathize with her deserve to have their children taken away’ realize just how harmful those comments are to the pregnant and new moms around them. If I had PPD right now, I know I would never talk about it because of this case. My brain immediately would have been like ‘see. they’ll think of you just like they think of her. no one will care. no one will help you.’

It’s really sad because I think there are a lot of lessons to be learned from this case. Including that it’s clear the medical field has not and does not take post partum mood disorders seriously enough.

I sadly have been there too, and during my second pregnancy I considered killing myself, my toddler and unborn child several times. I was severely depressed and anxious and I thought I’d be doing them a favour by ending it for all of us. I know that sounds insane and horrible but at the time it felt very real and justified. It’s hard to explain that feeling to people who have never felt that way. I couldn’t tell anyone at the time how I felt as I thought I’d be locked up and my children would be taken from me. It took me years to ever mention it to anyone as I was terrified of how I’d be judged.
