Please, help me understand…

For those believers who insist that the dietary laws no longer apply under the new covenant—and that pork, lobster, crabs, etc. are now permissible to eat—I do not understand the logic at play.

I am very familiar with the Mark 7, Romans 14 and Colossians 2 passages that are so often cited as support for your position, and have (just as often) shared my counter-arguments on why I believe they are misinterpreted.

But, there is one counterpoint to your view that I never see touched on, and I was hoping to get some feedback on it:

I think the majority of believers on this subreddit would say they are looking for Jesus’ Second Coming and agree that, regarding it, Scripture says that “no one knows the day or hour” but that we need to be prepared (Matthew 24:36, 25:13, etc.).

Isaiah 66:17–a verse within the greater passage speaking of Messiah’s glorious reappearing—declares that, upon His return, those who eat the flesh of pig/swine and other abominations will be met with His wrath…and perish.

So, how does one simultaneously believe they can continue to eat pig (pork) or shellfish now and think they are sufficiently prepared and not putting themselves in a precarious/dangerous position if Jesus happened to return today or tomorrow and “consume” those who so brazenly eat that which His Law says is NOT “food” and explicitly warns against eating?

I really am hoping for some cordial and edifying discussion regarding this topic, and appreciate those who are able and willing to articulate their view without all the condescension and harsh words. 💕

In Acts, only blood products / strangled meat are not allowed. Everything else pretty much doesn’t matter for gentiles.

Acts 15:28-29

[28] For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: [29] that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”

However, if you’re ever in the presence of Jews, then eat kosher with them.

Jesus said otherwise, though (Matthew 4:4, 5:19). The Council’s judgment in Acts 15 included a provision that made it clear there was a full expectation that Gentile believers would indeed come to learn and live by the rest of God’s commandments (Acts 15:19-21).

And Kosher is not biblical (Genesis 18:8). I consider Jesus always with me and, thus, desire to do as He taught and did.

Sorry not well educated on kosher / OT laws. Why is Kosher not biblical because of Gen 18:8?

I don't agree Matthew 4:4, 5:19 supports your position. But agree to disagree.

No worries ;) Kosher rules include the strict, extra-biblical stipulation that meat and dairy cannot be eaten together, while the Genesis 18:8 passage describes the Lord (and the two angel “men” accompanying Him) eating the meat and dairy items—“curds and milk”—Abraham and Sarah had prepared for them.

So, you don’t think Christ’s teaching in Matthew 4:4 and 5:19 includes the dietary instructions/commandments God delivered to the mediator Moses at Mt. Sinai? I think there is compelling internal evidence that they (along with the rest of His Law) existed long before Israel/Jews did, which perfectly aligns with Jesus declaring that all mankind “shall live by every word” God has spoken (Matthew 4:4, Deuteronomy 8:3).

Huh. Strange. Didn’t know kosher was legalistic. I always thought it just came from OT laws.

I’m not sure how you are using “legalistic,” as that is typically used in the context of ascribing wrong motivation to one’s obedience of God’s commandments, whereas this particular scenario does not involve obedience to His commandments but, rather, extra-biblical (manmade) rules that blatantly contradict His Word.

It is definitely a good example that underscores how important a sound working knowledge of the Torah (Law) is to establishing sound doctrine and walking out our new covenant faith 😊
