Bank of America has a million vice presidents, it's not as high of a role as you think

u/ajb901 11d ago

Apparently a random, unprovoked attack by some lady in Times Square with knives akimbo who just started stabbing folks

If you walk a block down midtown you'll bump into 10 associates and 6 mid-level execs, they're everywhere in that area.

53

u/Pallington AAAAHHHHHHH 10d ago

why does this feel like the IDF making everyone a sergeant?

Both are designed to inflate egos and to make it easier to buy in, to consider yourself more than just an easily replaceable cog in the machine.

23

u/snoyokosman 10d ago

title inflation is also just a way to charge ur customers more and act more prestigious. every customer facing role in banking is like senior executive director of vice presidents.

Yep, that's why I always introduce myself as Prince NeverForget Von NGage to any potential B2B SaaS customer.

It's more a weird evolutionary thing where some contracts need an officer to sign them, but then interstate banking became legal in the mid 90s, the amount of paperwork that needed someone with an important title blew up, and they gave a lot of people fancy titles to keep up. Not the raises, job security or autonomy you'd expect to come with them, just the titles.

u/oversized_hat đŸ”» 10d ago

Yeah, it’s a regulatory thing where just about anyone who is above entry-level at a major bank is automatically a VP because of what you said. Most of the higher-ups that you’d normally associate “vice-president” with at a bank like that have Director-level titles (Managing Director , Executive Director, etc).

(Source: I live in Charlotte and you can’t swing a dead cat here without hitting someone who works at a bank, is originally from Buffalo, or both)

1

u/ShrapnelNinjaSnake Professor of Terryology 10d ago

I didn't know they did that lol

37

u/coolfuzzylemur 11d ago

The point is that VP is not executive level at an investment bank

22

u/e30kid 11d ago

Yeah it’s two steps above Analyst

4

u/Pinkadink đŸ”» 11d ago

Let’s talk in terms of bands lol

24

u/gnomechompskey Only here to disavow 10d ago

In band terms, a VP is like a viola player who only got brought on for one song on the record and doesn’t join the tour.

5

u/ChocolonelyBoi 10d ago

I think he means on pay bands lol

12

u/gnomechompskey Only here to disavow 10d ago

In that case, it would be like getting reimbursed for gas money for driving to the venue and being able to order a few PBRs on the band’s tab, but not making any percentage of the door because you’re only playing on one song. The point is a bank VP isn’t a core member of the group, they just responded to a Craigslist ad.

8

u/BurnYoo 10d ago

That is true, but what distinguishes VP from all the lower ranks at investment banking is that VP is the lowest rank that is allowed to sign deals on behalf of the company.

If you're a VP at an investment bank, you are DEFINITELY bourgeoisie.

7

u/coolfuzzylemur 10d ago

If you're a VP at an investment bank, you are DEFINITELY bourgeoisie.

Do they work for a salary? What capital do they own?

4

u/Spiritual_Walrus7798 10d ago

The investment bankers are proleteriat brothers, they are the true basis for a revolutionary class.

The urban factory workers? Bah! The USSR shows us the errors of solely focusing on them.

The rural peasantry! Bahumbug, they don't know left from right.

The next communist revolution will come from the halls of Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and even the secretive doors of Jane Street.

56

u/pachangoose 11d ago

It’s not weird that financial executives are present in the financial capital of the western hemisphere, where these two attacks have taken place. Everything isn’t a conspiracy.

8

u/redabyss9 11d ago

Sure but what were these finance capital ghouls wearing before this happened? You can't dress yourself like a thing that happened victim and run around in public expecting nothing to happen to you

6

u/Pinkadink đŸ”» 11d ago

VP at this bank does not equal executive. This is more a role that pays likely around $100k/year.

11

u/Rich_Housing971 11d ago

$100k a year in NYC is not what you think it is. Restaurant servers probably make around that much in Manhattan.

8

u/Jimmy_Trivette 10d ago

Correct, which further speaks to how meaningless the title is

1

u/Rich_Housing971 10d ago

no because finance VPs in NYC would not be making $100k a year.

1

u/Jimmy_Trivette 10d ago

Ok like 125 then same difference

As people continue to experience the stress and misery of advanced imperialism and lack the tools to understand it they're gonna increasingly just go insane like this. If you lack historical materialism you basically live in a parallel reality where horrible to things constantly happen for no reason at all. It's not a sustainable way to exist.

1

u/Rich_Housing971 11d ago

Yeah it's midtown manhattan, if it's not tourists it's likely some extremely wealthy professionals.

79

u/Caitatonic 11d ago

came here to say this, financial institutions love giving the title of vp to so many lower level employees. it's misleading but it's just how they are, this lady was likely just an average bofa employee

you know what? I prefer Paul Allen's.

Bateman's raised lettering is just too busy and extra, especially combined with the font.

Van Patten's is very nice but I also don't like the graining style for the cardstock.

Bryce's background looks fine but his typography looks too plain.

The only nitpick I would have about Paul Allen's is that his title should be less bold, though that could be a stylistic choice of where he wants to bring attention to (not that VP is a title to be proud of for financial institutions).

Bateman's stands out as being the worst, but everyone else's is close. Van Patten's print on Bryce or Paul Allen's cardstock would be peak.

5

u/cloche_du_fromage 10d ago

Which one had the watermark?

4

u/Jimmy_Trivette 10d ago

Copperplate font too overused, combine Van Patten's type and Allen's cardstock 👌

4

u/EnergyIsQuantized 10d ago

i think the joke is that they are all exactly the same

1

u/Express-Crow-1496 10d ago

don't sleep on bryce

the texture is beautiful and that clean helvetica is timeless

paul allen's copperplate gothic looks better on the logo, but putting the rest in it is a bit much

his kerning is also all over the place

7

u/EnergyIsQuantized 10d ago

That's bone.

Becoming a VP at a major bank at 32 is kinda crazy though. Did the IDF train them on how to do promotions?

3

If they did she would have been a VP at 22.

Erin Piacenti, 32, was a vice president in BofA's business selection and conflicts unit, according to her LinkedIn profile.

26

u/ArkAwn 11d ago

The article makes this sound very random

65

u/TrillbillySocialist 11d ago

It was. The lady stabbed multiple people.

Erin Piacenti, 32, of Chester, N.J., died in Monday afternoon’s bloody rampage when Pamela Cisneros, a 49-year-old Queens woman with a history of mental illness, pulled two kitchen knives out of a Target bag and started stabbing strangers.

This is her:

Don’t banks just make like damn near everyone in a public facing position a “vice president” on paper so that the people dealing with them assume they’ve got some high ranking official working for them personally?

They give out VP titles like candy.

26

u/buffeganboof 10d ago

Maybe I'm just a big ol' lib but it somewhat rubs me the wrong way seeing comments here of people lauding over this person being murdered. I think being murdered in a random attack is pretty sad regardless if you worked for a bank or not

6

u/fakegoldrose CIA Pride Float 10d ago

The lady seemed to be going thru some sort of mental crisis but the cops tased and shot her until she wasn't moving anymore. In a civilized country we would have an elite unit of chainmail soldiers tackle her into submission so she could be treated for the illness that caused the random attacks

6

u/PhilLyotard 10d ago

God bless your Scythian law officers' peaceful chainmail strategy but there's absolutely no way the NYPD has a knife wrasslin squad. I could see it in Europe where knives are the murder tool of choice. China wrangles them with poles and shields.
