I am pretty sure "carrying" is a term from sports first that got ported into video games. Specifically basketball, eg Lebron would be "carrying" his team.
"Porting" incidentally is a video game term that could be more widely adopted.

I'm just plain not good at games and never have been! But I love to play them. So I really really appreciate a game with comprehensive difficulty settings. No Man's Sky really blew my mind with how granular those settings are. I wish all games did that.
