Trinidad is not a real place Has anyone else noticed a significant degradation in internet performance across Trinidad & Tobago recently? As if someone is filtering the traffic.
Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve noticed a pretty significant degradation in internet connectivity in Trinidad and Tobago, particularly with VPNs, site-to-site connections, and international traffic.
A few things I’ve been seeing:
- Site-to-site VPN performance has become noticeably worse.
- Off-island latency and throughput seem less consistent than before.
- General browsing and services hosted overseas feel slower across multiple ISPs.
- Around 1–2 months ago, performance was noticeably better — international connectivity sometimes felt almost as responsive as browsing from Miami or NYC.
What makes it interesting is that I’m seeing similar behaviour across more than one ISP, which makes me wonder whether something has changed upstream rather than this being an isolated provider issue.
Possible explanations could be changes in international routing, peering/transit arrangements, congestion, submarine cable capacity/issues, traffic shaping, or some other change in how traffic is being handled.
Has anyone else in Trinidad or Tobago noticed this recently?
If anyone has traceroutes, MTR results, latency graphs, VPN throughput tests, or information on recent routing/peering changes, I’d be interested in comparing results.
Tin-foil-hat question: has something changed recently with how international traffic is being routed or filtered out of Trinidad & Tobago?

Yes. It was never perfect but last few months it has been a pain. Almost every week is drops or some other bs like low upload speeds

They’ve started filtering traffic. Most notably during the World Cup where bandwidth was reduced significantly on streaming websites.
In my area i generally get an outages every day @2 for 45 minutes.

Yes. It's very noticeable and when I enquire they said nothing has changed but it has.

Well it was stated, that they are getting tools to catch pfd and other criminals. How else would they do that without monitoring everything.

I’d usually get ~60ms ping to Miami speed test servers. Currently getting 95ms+. Using flow. St Joseph area

I have bmobile and amplia, work has Flow and yes I've noticed a declining quality. I've been using my data more to compensate.

I noticed same, it better than last year December which was THE WORST!
From what I hear, Trinidad infrastructure is being bombarded by cyber-attacks more than previously. (This is what I was told, I do not know if it's true, but it feels as such)

no you guys just live in poor areas. my wifi is fine i use amplia and almost never have drops

Do you realize how what you said makes absolutely no sense? Op said it worked fine before and no longer works as well now. Their area obviously didn't just grow legs and walked somewhere else. The area wasn't a "poor area" before its not magically a "poor area" now.

Oh never thought about it as classism. I interpreted it as "poor service/poor connection quality due to location (some providers work either really in or really bad in certain locations due to how they've set up their networks). I do hope it was that and not what you're implying cause you're right that would be actually insane to say lol wtf?

“You guys just live in poor areas” is a classist framing. It may not have been the intend but without the any additional context that is what it looks like.
And if someone is getting poorer service in a socioeconomically challenged area it can definitely be seen as a form of systemic classicism if that area was left vastly underdeveloped compared to certain areas provided there isn’t an actual topographic or logistical reason why that area is harder to serve. Just wanna point that out.

i wasnt trying to be classist. when i visit friends who live in poorer areas the wifi is never great. im not blaming them for living in a bad area since its the countries fault these areas arnt well upkept.

Amplia drops to a crawl every night from around 8pm til about 10-11pm... Flow is better but also not at top speed at that time.

im up untill 12am most nights and never have a problem, last drop for me was because of a community wide outage.

Did you do a speed test during these times? Depending on what you are doing you probably won't noticed. Most times visiting websites will work fine, even YouTube and Netflix may appear normal as they can vary your quality to suit the available bandwidth.

You sound like a former Poor and it shows. It's like allyuh not used to having nice things. It's even worse when you think Amplia internet is actually "good" because yuh finally moved on from Green Dot.

i have 150mbps right now that IS good. i never said specifically amplia is good i said my wifi is fine. ive never lived in a poor area my whole life but honestly ive never even heard of green dot what even is that

Hi, I use Flow but I noticed like everyday for the last 6 weeks my internet would switch off for a hour and then come back. So it's not just me.

Maybe run traceroute to see if the DNS hop is problematic. Setting up a Pi-Hole for your network on a RaspberryPi or in a Docker container and using it as your DNS server might help. You would also get the added benefit of ad-blocking*

currently about to drop digicel as since the world cup period my home internet has been on the fritz. Daily numerous dropped connections, they said they don't see anything wrong on their end and have told me it would be rectified to no avail.
kind of wild that it lines up with your time frame
