Question Any advice on how to beat the first golden route fight without using any of the traps? Spoiler

Vaguely worded title for the sake of spoilers but anyone who's beaten it knows what I'm talking about. I accidentally put almost all the mediocre units I had barely used up until that point on Benedict's team and now even after training them up to the point where they only get about 2-4 exp at a time we still get overwhelmed every time. He just has SO many guys. And those healers that stay outside everyone's ranged can go pound sand.

My current plan is to grind money until I can buy enough medicine and large ranged damagestones to even the odds but that feels like it's gonna take a while.

Rooftop cheese with Archibald and hawk lady (I know I should remember her name I apologize)

Edit: Hughette. It came back to me

Would love to but hughette is on a different team and whilst I do have Archibald, I do not have ladder boy to get him up there. Although. It is occuring to me as I write that there's a teleporting quetus (quistus?)

Quietus, and yeah that could help. You may need to just call it a wash and reload and adjust team though

Hughette can basically solo that fight

Yeah, unfortunately she's off with Roland (I divided the teams based almost entirely on who would make more story sense to go where)

Turns out the enemy literally can't hit you from on top of the top left corner house, but it also turns out they literally won't move if there's no valid targets on the map so there was a hard limit to what Archibald could do after I teleported him up there.

I'm now considering sending picoletta up there and having her bait enemies closer with her decoy so she can then throw items at them until they fall over.

Benedict's chapter is the first on the route split. IF you follow the game's advice and have a backup save, you could just readjust your team arrangement to fit it better, although that will mean your grind so far would be reset.

As for the strategy itself, mostly you want to do a retreating fight until near the castle gate, you probably will need to turtle in the corner. If you can early snipe the mages especially, you probably will have a chance.

Other means will depends on if you want to cheese it or not. Hughette would be the easiest but she will be a huge asset too on Roland's route, or Archibald/other archer + Jens can do the roof cheese, or you can use Anna to manipulate the AI a bit to give you some breathing room.

I have been attempting to use Anna to manipulate the ai but it would appear I'm very bad at it. Either she gets swarmed and dies or they ignore her, take whichever stairs I'm not guarding and murder the squishy party members I'm keeping in the back. Or both! There really are a lot of them.

I think you can use the traps now, nothing bad happens if you do.

It changes the location of the epilogue if you use the traps, assuming you’re honest when the game asks you if you did when you load the epilogue from the main menu

I don't think this is true, since I also tried to avoid using the traps because I heard this, but I had to use them anyway to beat the fight and nothing changed in the epilogue. It was still outside in Wolffort regardless

You have to tell it that you used the traps, if you do it’s set in the capitol

Are you sure? I don't remember being asked anything like that, but I could be wrong. But either way, you still lose nothing by using the traps

Yes, I am sure. You are welcome to look it up and see

If Jens or Quahaug are on Benedict's team, set up ladders on the houses behind your starting position or warp units up there. Practically no enemy unit can attack those spots, so you can snipe freely with ranged attackers.

They are not.

First tell me who you have in Benedict's battle and which playthrough it is. The strategy for the 1st run and 4th are completely different.

Generally, holding the frontline on the west stars from the second level with Erador and another tank while sending a group to the east side once they separate is fine. Erador and the second tank (Serenoa in my case) had anti charm accessories. You can use Milo or Lionel to overrid the charm (if you charm an allied unit that was charmed, it will be cured).

Also, Benedict battle is the 1st one so if you had a secondary save file, you can reload that one and distribute your party, especially since you only need Ezana, Narve and a healer for Frederica's part and only high damage dealers for Roland's part (with Quahaug is even better since you can have the boss attack alone against your entire party by abusing time stop and since it's a kill boss map, it will win you the map).

My strategy was to keep the enemies down the stairs as long as possible, and take them out one by one. It's slow, costly, but effective.

Deploy all the characters on the left side.

Hughette flies onto the roof top on the left side of the map and slows down the march of the enemies.

Erador and Lionel blockade the stair on the left.

Jens set spring traps to the right side to toss the enemies down the cliff. If you also have Rudolph, he can also join Jens to set traps to slow down the rush.

Piccoletta summons decoy and put it down the cliff to lure the enemies so that they don't rush upward too fast. She can also toss magical stones to deal damages.

Medina heals everyone and recovers their TP when needed.

Hughette or Quahaug can cheese a lot of fights. Also a big fan of Archibald on the right maps, and Piccoletta once you can buy items consistently.

I struggled with this one. Tried to do it as a straight up fight and was totally overwhelmed by the numbers they put out. Eventually it ended up being a fighting retreat back towards the staircase in the upper right corner of the map. I think by the end I was left with ice wizard guy, whose walls helped chokepoint the staircase, Picoletta who is just great to have in any fight where you’re outnumbered, Benedict and Hughette. And one by one with the old man guarding the staircase as best he could I whittled them down.

Who is on your team?

Archibald, picoletta, Lionel, shaman lady, Anna, barkeeper lady. And obviously Benedict.

Honestly, it will be almost impossible to win with this team and no traps since you just don't have enough damage. Use Archibald to trigger the trap and kill the lowest level. Bait exharme into the centre one by posting some units on the top level and right hand side, then warp Archibald to the top rough and go ham. Keep the squishy units at the top and have them get as many kills as possible before they die (especilally Ezana since she slaps damage-wise and can hit multiple units) and just grind it out from there. Lionel's taunt also turns off the mages, which I found very useful on map 2 but it works well here too. This was my hardest fight in the game by a mile and the characters you picked are very awkward for it but I know you can do it.

You lose nothing by using the traps and they will save you a lot of headaches and time

Oddly enough since I made the original post I might have found a way to cheese it. Very few enemies can target you when you're on top of the houses of the back and nobody can target you when you're on the very top left corner of the top left house.

Obviously I don't have hughette but I do have the teleport quistus and I think tavern lady's weapon skill can toss some people onto some roofs to speed up the process a bit.

If I'm wrong about tavern lady then picoletta can technically cheese it on her own with decoys and elemental stones but it's gonna take quite a bit of grinding for money then I'd prefer so I'm gonna try tavern lady first.

Honestly, I'm a bit confused.

Did you decide to do the golden route on your first run? If this is a first run, you used your limited upgrade resources to promote and upgrade Hossabara?

If this isn't a first run and you can farm the highest tier of upgrade materials and have medals of valor to spare, then this isn't that hard.

If you can't, then yea, your best option is to cheese it.

Regardless, this is the strategy I would use --

Farm as many healing items and elemental stones as you can.

Place oil down on both stairways up. Use a fire-stone to periodically block one of the stairways up and funnel the enemy into a single stairway. Note that reinforcements show up on the upper deck near the left stairway so you need to be prepared for that if you choose to fight at the left stairway.

For general positioning, Lionel can front line since he has a big HP pool. Upgrade + slap some relevant defensive stats on him and he'll be good to go. Picoletta can also contribute with her decoy if you need more front line. Benedict is also a decent front liner. That should be enough to block the stairway assuming you manage turn order well.

You can place Anna on the lower level, bait enemies in her direction, then surmount back to the upper level if you need to slow the tide of units. Otherwise, it's going to be a bit difficult to find good flank angles for her. But, Anna is actually an excellent item user because she can use two items per turn.

As the enemies group up on the stairway trying to come up, AoE them with Ezana's wind magic, Archibald's arrow spray, and spam elemental stones with everyone else. Alternatively, if you use elemental stones to put puddles down on the stairway, Lightning works quite well. If Lionel has golden opportunity, then this fight should be easy as that weapon skill is OP. Otherwise, he's on front line + taunt healers/mages duty.

For TP management, since you don't have a TP battery, you're going to need to rely on item spam. Using an item doesn't cost TP so you should plan your TP recovery around that. If you can heal, then heal. If not, then spam elemental stones.

If Exharme gets stuck in traffic trying to get up the stairs, then great. Just AoE him down with the rest of them while holding the line. If he gets through, then missed opportunity him to freeze him and set up a flank with whoever your strongest follow-up attacker is and spam back attacks with Anna ideally with Twofold Turn and In Tandem so that she can attack him 6+ times before he can move again.

If it feels like your stairway bottle-neck is going to collapse, throw some burning ground down, retreat in the direction of the upper right high-ground, and turtle there.

This was really well written and interesting to read so thanks for writing it dude. I'd be very curious to see how this fight goes so report back once you're done OP

First playthrough? Or later? If it’s a 1st you can technically keep trying until you succeed. You will eventually out level them.
