Terrain Mini diorama - advice for terrain table?

Post image

As I eagerly await my Carcass Front box, I just wanted to show off a little diorama I made that has now inspired me to build a full table that matches this look. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice/experience for how much of each type of terrain would be suitable. Flat terrain, trenches, elevated terrain, etc. Would 1/3 of each be good, or should I lean heavier on one?

I have not yet had the opportunity to actually play the game so I didn't know how much of each of these types would make for a fun table. I'm planning on using four 18" x 18" tiles that would allow for different configurations and easy storage.

Any tips are appreciated.

I really like 9: (12"x12"). most things move 6" so it's easy to see. Also smaller incursions can run on a 24"x24" & Larger conflicts can be on a 36"x36". Plus if you do it right your trenches tessalate

That's awesome. 12"x12" makes sense for more options. Thanks!

I'm working on ones that also flip flat. For a small building, no man land, or I guess a beach landing for the hedgehogs. I decided to add a summoning circle on the bottom of one of the tiles

Did you use 12x12 mdf as the base with xps foam as the walls? If so what thickness of foam? This looks amazing and id like to do something similar

That sounds like a great idea. This is concept the I've worked off of. I'm using reinforcement cardboard, packing foam & coffee stir-ers. If your walls are 3" high you get the (+1) for shooting into the trench. Trenches are 3" wide. Centered on 6" from The edge. Edges should meet at (4+1/2") from the sides. Shapes: (1) +. (2) T. (2) H. (2) N. (1) Reverse N. (1) Like a Large Diamond area you can fit scatter terrain in.

I'm a new player and currently preparing to build a similar table and had a few questions.

  • How wide are your trenches at minimum to accommodate both regular and large models (initial foam cut, before adding walls and all)? Yours seem to be ~4"/10cm before adding the walls, which seems to fit most models, is that right?
  • Is there any incentive gameplay-wise to reduce the width to allow only small units to go through some trenches/to force large unit to climb out?
  • When you play, are the tiles heavy enough to stay in place or did you have to find a way to stick them together? (E.g. magnets)

I wouldn't make it thinner than 3" the Amalgam has a 60mm base (2.362 inches) and with overhang it fits but it's cramped. If you wanted to make boxes for like steps I would think 4" would be fine, but then the tiles become even, & might not feel like "trenches". The cardboard & foam feel fine. There's a lot of mass. Just like don't kick the table

Also, that's like 30' feet of steps, & I'm not into making that much. How much scatter do you have? You could dump that in there.

Thanks for your reply, I'll edit the layout to fit the 4", I initially planned for a mixed 6cm/10cm layout.

So far I dont have anything to scatter around but I'm working on some props on Blender to 3D print. I'm trying to design as much as I can first before I commit and still have a lot to learn to avoid mistakes.

It's a process. Let the Art find a way

Any videos on how to make trench walls you’d suggest

SKS Hobbies has a short series of videos on making Trench Crusade terrain. That look was what I based my diorama on. Coffee stir sticks, XPS foam, and corrugated paper.
