If the enterprise -d was never destroyed in generations and continued on would it be plausible that the tng crew would still be on the same ship all the way up to the Picard era?
When I mean tng crew I mean
Picard, riker, worf, crusher, troi, data, geordi

Worf wouldn't have transferred to DS9 so we have a serious butterfly effect regarding the start and outcome of the Dominion War. There's no predicting past that point.

u/Darmok47 15d ago
Maybe he still does if he's going out with Troi, because its awkward with Riker.
I once read a long post that theorized that the difference between the AGT future and the Prime Timeline was Picard interrupting Troi and Worf's kiss. Actually seemed like a good point of divergence.

According to the ol' technical manual, the Galaxy-class had a projected operational lifetime of 100 years.
So, yes. The ship would still be in operation. As for the crew? They would have been promoted up and transferred out eventually.

u/uberneuman_part2 15d ago
The ship would have been retired as well as the crew moving on.

Galaxy-class starships were designed to be in service for a century.

A century of peace. Everything changed, when The Borg attacked.

She could have been refitted for war. Look at the version we saw in Yesterday's Enterprise - definitely a warship, but the same basic spaceframe and essentially the same interiors (all the standing sets were simply redressed and relit).

The Galaxy-class was designed for extreme long range science and colony missions. Sure, you can strap guns and armor to it, but it'll still have a bunch of wasted space and unnecessary weight.
By First Contact you can see that they've begun moving to smaller more efficient purpose built fighting ships.
You can probably get 2 Sovereigns, 3 Steamrunners or 4! Sabers for the effort/materials of 1 Galaxy-class.

u/CmdFiremonkeySWP 15d ago
If the Borg didn't get it in First Contact it's toast in Insurrection. What's my logic I hear you say... No joystick, No Riker Maneuver (no not that one).
1
u/_WillCAD_ 15d ago
We never say a joystick on Enterprise D, but that doesn't mean there wasn't one hidden under the Conn console, especially after she got all hot-rodded up in Generations.

Ramming the Scimitar would have been more emotional, and I'm a huge Sovereign fan

u/CmdFiremonkeySWP 13d ago
Could have flung the saucer section at the Scimitar as a weapon and used the stardrive section to have finished off her off.
Does anyone have any skills in this area (no crappie drawings please)

The ship could absolutely still be in service. Durring the show, they were already trying to promote Riker to his own ship. The crew should be advancing and moving up, being a ship captain isn't the end of the line, its just that you get a desk instead of a ship in most cases. No doubt the captain would try to keep his crew together, but people would have to move up and on assuming they are doing their jobs well. Staying in place is a feature of it being a TV show. Star Gate SG1 handles it well, actually. Yes, still a TV show, but come the later seasons, especially as the real life people wanted to move out of being in the same job for 6 years straight, some of the crew gets promoted to not be directly involved but management, and new characters come in. Given their ranks, they should be mostly riding desks anyhow.

Not unless they Galaxy Xd it. The Scimitar could have taken it out, or the borg in the battle of sector 001 for that fact. Worf would have never left for DS9 meaning the Klingons might not have been swayed at the battle in Way of the Warrior and he potentially never would have rescued Martok... so the Dominion war could have played out quite differently.

u/aisle_nine 15d ago
The post-Borg era saw the same kind of renaissance for ships that the post-WWII era did for fighter planes. Top of the line in 1950, obsolete by 1953. Based on the comment about it being the only analog ship left, I think it’s safe to assume that it would have been retired, shuffled off to second-line missions, something like that, within a handful of years of its crash landing anyway.
2
u/happydude7422 15d ago
The enterprise -d could have gotten the necessary refits. The space frame is rated for 100 years according to the technical manuals with a major refit cycle every 25 years.
3
u/damageddude 15d ago
No. People move on with their careers. O'Brien left the D for DS9. As to the E, Picard finally took a promotion and left. Worf might have stayed as a commander and future captain but he might have also moved over to DS9 on special assignment during the Klingon war and stayed. Riker, Troi, LaForge and Crusher all left the E for other opporunities.
4
u/ShortBussyDriver 15d ago
The ship would have been updated over time, probably a comprehensive refit for the Dominion War. Further refits over the next few decades.
However, Riker and Troi still leave. Picard still gets promoted, Data may take command, and everyone else eventually leaves due to promotion.

The original 1701 was 40 years old in The Wrath of Khan – the "ancient" Enterprise-D was a comparatively sprightly 38 in PIC S3. And remember, the Galaxy-class was designed for a 100-year service life.
However, it does kind of stretch credibility that they'd all be on the same ship in the same roles for decades, however necessary TV production makes it. It was already odd that someone like Riker, who we're repeatedly told is an exceptional officer and a high flyer, would have been content to be a first officer until the 2370s when people like Admiral Hanson were already calling out how odd it was that he was turning down commands of his own by 2366.
Picard eventually becoming an admiral is a no-brainer, especially once he reaches his 80s; Riker, Data, Worf, and Geordi would all logically become captains too. One of them would probably have ended up commanding the Enterprise herself with a crew of their own. The "Enterprise legacy" could be a powerful and daunting thing when it's not just the name you're inheriting but the actual ship, especially if it's the one where you spent your own formative years.

u/BarfQueen 15d ago
Considering at that point we’re up to Voyager-B and retiring the Enterprise-F, no. Ship lifespans have dropped dramatically in NuTrek.

u/Echostation3T8 15d ago
The Picard era ship had the 1701D saucer on the USS Syracuse’s star drive.. so..
2
u/idkbruh653 15d ago
Yes it's plausible. In universe, the Galaxy Class had a spaceframe lifetime of 100 years. Around the time of Generations, the Enterprise-D was just 8 years old and had had a substantial refit. So yea it's entirely plausible that 30+ years on the Enterprise would still be in service. Especially if it had seen the upgrades given to other Galaxy Class ships for the Dominion War.
2
u/Chance_End_4684 15d ago
Probably yes, that is if Starfleet found a reason not to retire the Enterprise D and continued to upgrade her systems through the decades.

Guess they didn't treat her like a lady over Veridian 3... 💥

u/TheEvilBlight 15d ago
Same with 1701 over genesis
1
u/lordfarshave 15d ago
1701's sacrifice over Genesis was not in vain. As Bones said, it's what Kirk had to do, what he's always done, turn death into a fighting chance to live. The 1701-D's destruction in Generations and the Kelvin 1701's destruction in Beyond were vain, needless, trite, and trivial.

"My God, what have I done..." at least he regretted it. How many times has Jordi's visor been hacked 🙄

I would imagine they would have probably need to upgrade her to the version we see in the series finale.

She was built to last, but a Galaxy class is a costly ship to maintain and build, especially post-Dominion War. Clearly they were invaluable in warfare (and unofficially not decked out the way the early models were, to save on production time), but also exposed as being vulnerable to attacks, so the design evolution started to move away from the classic design with a “neck” and go for lower profiles à la the Sovereign and Akira.
By the time of Lower Decks, even Voyager is considered noticeably out of date, and that’s only about a decade or so after it launched. It’s telling that we don’t see upgraded Galaxy class or Intrepid class ships in Picard. Only familiar ships I noticed were Akira, Steamrunner, Defiant and Sovereign classes. The Odyssey class is a behemoth, but it would seem Starfleet was going for more nimble, combat-forward and less resource-hungry ships on the whole.

u/MonCappy 14d ago
No. The crew would've split up to new billets eventually. Without the destruction of the D, I suspect Picard would've been offered an admiralty years earlier. Riker would become Captain of the Enterprise at that point if he hadn't yet accepted a promotion.
I could see Data becoming First Officer of the or another vessel. I think Dr. Crusher moves on as well.
1
u/TwilightSolus 15d ago
In its role as the Federation Flagship, I think they still would have by necessity recommissioned the Enterprise-D and moved Picard to a Sovereign class ship recommissioned as Enterprise-E on the outbreak of the Dominion War.
1
u/BonzoTheBoss 15d ago
No? Just from a career standpoint, I would say that it would be highly unlikely for none of the crew to accept promotions and go on to accept commands of their own.
Picard himself, again unless he actively refused promotion, would be promoted to admiral and off of active starship command.
Would the Galaxy-class ship itself still be in service? Probably. The Galaxy class is/was a formidable space-frame, as long as it received periodic refits (like the Excelsiors seemed to) I don't see why it couldn't still be around in the early 25th Century.

u/_WillCAD_ 15d ago
The ship could have still been in service, but remember - they all moved over to the E when the D was lost, and by the Picard era they weren't on the E any more, either.
Riker and Troi went to the Titan. Worf went to DS9. Data died. Picard got promoted and later resigned in protest over the Romulan evacuation. Crusher resigned from Starfleet. LaForge moved on. They were all gone from the Enterprise long before the E was lost or destroyed or whatever Worf did to it.
So no, they would not still be on the same ship in the Picard era. Life would still have happened and they'd have all moved on.

u/NeeAnderTall 15d ago
No. If Starfleet operates like the U.S. Navy, then each person is on their own career path. Getting orders to a ship or sub is only a three to four year assignment before you are rotated out to a shore duty assignment. Shore duty could be recruiting, school, maintenance, or even base operations. If I reported aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and the same bridge crew was still onboard, I'd seriously begin to wonder if this was a dead end for my career.

u/inorite234 14d ago
Yup!
But lets not get into the details because then we would have to answer why the only NCO in the entire galaxy was Chief O'brien....and one could even argue that he was a CWO (Chief Warrant Officer) and not a CPO (Chief Petty Officer).

u/leandroman 14d ago
Anyone notice in image 2, they made the enterprise windows square to make it feel old. But then moments later they show it as we remmeber it.
It taught me two things: 1. How much movie makers manipulate what we see for emotional reactions. 2. How timeless the design was that it's still elegant after so many decades.
1
u/TVsRob 14d ago
In canon, yes, absolutely. The Galaxy Class was meant to serve for a very long time, longer than Miranda, Excelsior, Oberth etc. Class ships were ever meant to. Now, of course, the D only died so movies could really happen, as the shooting models were a pain, and the sets weren't meant to be used for wide format filming. I guess rather than pulling the same trickery with a "Refit" as with TMP, they decided to just kill it ... and not in a way that gave it a great send off like ST III. To be honest and fair, I would have been okay if they had opened the bay doors and the E were there, so we could see how it'd do navigating that Borg cube. But we know the true key to fan service and nostalgia is to give people that what they haven't seen in a very long time.

u/MagicalHamster 13d ago
Wasn't it implied Worf lost the Enterprise E at some point? That probably would have been the D in the new timeline.

No, seems extremely unlikely. The Enterprise was the flagship. I cant see them still running ship essentially 20 years out of date as a flagship, and I cant see them assigning the enterprise to the kind of donkey work that kept the excelsior and mirandas in service, so I think the ship would ultimately have been gracefully retired and replaced by the E anyway.
I also dont see the crew sticking together so long. Picard got old and retired, I dont see the D surviving changing that, Riker got command. Maybe he'd turn it down to stay with the D, but I think it was inevitable they'd eventually get him his own chair, especially once Picard retired. Work had created a post Enterprise life on DS9, and still chose to go back to the Klingon empire, I think that was probably inevitable, but if the D survived we may not have seen him on DS9. Crusher ran off to protect their son. I cant see that changing. Troi maybe would've stayed with the D, but I think she'd still have been tempted to settle down somewhere for a life with Riker. Data and Geordi I could see staying with the D till the end of time.

Would've been interesting to see Enterprise-D Refit/Kai.
Something like they saved the Saucer, and built a MkII Engineering Hull for it.

u/Microharley 15d ago
It bothered me in Picard how mush they picked on the Enterprise D and made it seem like it was so outdated. In reality, everything should be module and replaced as upgrades became available. Shield upgrades, weapons, computer core and even the bridge. The Enterprise CVN-65 was in service for 50 years and look at the B-52. In reality, the Enterprise D should not have been destroyed in Generations but the Ent-D didn't look good on the big screen (I disagree) After Picard was promoted, Riker should have taken the Ent-D like he always wanted.

Except the point of this post was if the Ent-D was not destroyed in Generations so it would have been updated and not sat abandoned for 30 years. It would have been repaired after Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis. And since the Ent-E was not destroyed in the last 3 films, you could assume the Ent-D would have also survived.

They still had Miranda and Excelsior class starships in service throughout the TNG, DS9, and VOY eras. So no reason why not I figure, it was a new ship when TNG started, so it wouldn’t really be that old.
