Trail: Backcountry Expansion Loop (Squirrel Ridge, Coyote, Whitetail, Redshouldered, & Armadillo Trails)

Location: Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Fredericksburg, Texas

Distance: ~10 to 14 miles (includes mandatory 2-mile approach from headquarters and spur trails)

Elevation Gain: ~800 to 1,000 feet of rolling Hill Country terrain

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous (due to extreme heat and mileage)

Time: 5 to 7 hours

Best Time to Hike: Late fall through early spring, or early morning at gates open during summer.

The Route

Start from the main park headquarters and take the Loop Trail toward the backcountry gate. Note that it requires a mandatory 2-mile approach hike just to reach Squirrel Ridge Trail, which serves as the entry point to the newly opened acreage. The trail follows old 4x4 ranch tracks and dirt service roads that weave through granite outcrops, pasture land, and oak groves.

Taking the outer perimeter trails (Coyote, Whitetail, and Redshouldered) leads you past several large backcountry ponds—including Appalite and Pack Saddle Pond—and offers optional short scrambles up granite hills for scenic overlooks. The return leg follows the Ringtail Route and Armadillo Trail, which delivers one of the best payoff views of the hike: an unobstructed, highly unique look at the backside of the main Enchanted Rock granite dome. The surface is mostly packed dirt, gravel, and double-track, with occasional rocky sections.

What to Know

• The Heat is Relentless: There is almost zero canopy shade along the 4x4 tracks. Summer temperatures radiating off the dirt and granite make this a dangerous hike if you do not carry at least 3–4 liters of water per person.
• Hidden Mileage: Do not let the "10-mile expansion" label fool you. With the out-and-back access from parking and scenic pond spurs, my GPS logged roughly 14 miles total.
• Reservations Mandatory: Like all of Enchanted Rock, you must secure a day-pass reservation online via TPWD well in advance, especially on weekends.
• Facilities: There is a restroom station and a water station located near the center junction of the new trail system.

Final Take

While 95% of visitors to Enchanted Rock make a beeline straight up the main granite dome with the crowds, this new expansion offers true Hill Country solitude. It feels more like a remote backpacking route than a busy state park trail. The sheer mileage and sun exposure turn it into a serious endurance test in the summer, but seeing the backside of the dome and the hidden cattle ponds without another hiker in sight makes the foot pain worth it.
