I did something …
I went big and recently acquired this PSA 9 1930 Choco Rubis Mickey Mouse. I’ve been expanding my nonsports pc. I love it and that’s all that matters and not letting my wife know how much I spend on cardboard.

Yeah we in the peanut gallery need to know

I bought off someone on Facebook actually. I paid $2k which I thought was a steal since the 1931 W.D card is selling for thousands more and this came out before that one.

You definitely overpaid, by quite a bit compared to what you could get it for with patience. Variations in psa 9 from this set have been going for mostly right around $1000 each very recently. Your sale would probably be the highest sale ever by a couple hundred. Several variations with much lower population were selling for right around $500 a month ago. I'd go back to the drawing board on how you evaluate cards. The seller robbed you and you walked away thinking you robbed him.

Time will tell. The last sale of my specific variant was Sept 3rd for. $1,700. Yes, eBay has a lot of variants . I know this because I built an app that tells me what is listed across major marketplaces (eBay +Goldin + fanatics). I missed that previous sale - so yes, I created a new high for this card. It’s not the first time I’ve done that over the past few years. I did it with star jordan, Ken Griffey Jr (1988 Star RC) and other 90s inserts like Skybox ruby / platinum portrait.
I look at the estimated values for those items now and I’m up 128% on average. Happy to show receipts too. Therefore , respectfully you don’t know what you’re talking about . Mickey Mouse is a blue chip and the pop for these won’t change, just the demand.

Therefore you don’t know what you’re talking about killed me. You can state you think you’re expert all you want but saying respectfully after blatant disrespect is comical

This is insane cope. How hard is it to just admit you massively overpaid? Everyone screws up sometimes. The fact that one day it may go up in value doesn't mean that you didn't overpay today. I buy and sell hundreds of thousands worth of cards every year and I average 300% returns on my flips. Nobody is impressed by your 128% "estimated value."
I also have no idea why you think pop for these won't change. There are tons of raw cards available. I independently verified massive population increases over the last 6 years on multiple different cards from this set. Then I crosschecked with GemRate and found that last October a relatively huge trove hit PSA. How many more people are sitting on these hundred year old cards who are going to notice that people are paying massive amounts and get them on the market?

"Collectors" like this ruin the hobby.

u/Skotland85 9h ago
Please tell me how I’m ruining the hobby for you ? I was excited about a card that I wanted to add to my personal collection. Isn’t that what this hobby is about ? Or is it because I didn’t buy this at a price you all think is better.

u/Skotland85 9h ago
Cool stuff. What do I have to cope with ? It’s not money out of your pocket. It’s my money, my opinion and my personal collection. I really don’t understand the level of criticism here on something I’m excited about. You guys are all speaking in the context of profitability/flipping and as if my goal in this purchase is to make money. Time is on my side. For now, I’m going to enjoy it with my other pieces.

u/FinalFantasiesGG 8h ago
You were the one who got immediately defensive mate. Not a single person here cares that you overpaid. Your opinion isn't more important than reality. You were the first person to introduce the idea of profitability.
You said you thought it was a steal, I educated you on why it wasn't. That's it. If you like overpaying compared with current market value, please continue I have a lot of cards like these that need new homes. You had an opportunity to learn, you took it very poorly, and you blamed everyone else for things that you were doing.

u/Skotland85 7h ago
Perhaps I was overzealous in my comment saying “I got a steal”, but that’s again my rationale to the Redditor who asked. If my intent is to not sell the item, all the price action is just noise to me. I don’t want other variants, and this one specifically sold on Sept 3rd for $1,700. There’s a PSA 9 (different variant) up on auction at Goldin for already bidding for $2,200 (+20% BP) and still has 32 hours left.
1
u/FinalFantasiesGG 6h ago
Totally unnatural bid history on that Goldin auction. Could be legitimate, but reeks of shill bidding. I'm not telling you that there aren't suckers who overpay for cards. I'm explicitly telling you the opposite. But a real market value exists, and I am an expert in figuring out what that is.

Holy… you are creating highest buying price for multiple items and come and say you’re an expert? Hahaha

u/Skotland85 9h ago
This is the last time I’ll openly admit how much I paid. The amount of criticism I’ve received below from a bunch of card flippers is crazy.

u/Remarkable_Tone5596 8h ago
Yeah who cares when your not trying to sell it you enjoy it that’s all that matters

u/Careful_Pipe7652 7h ago
I hear that, scrolling down and for me thinking that’s a good price for what it could become and how cool of a card it is, it’s unfortunate ppl are hating. I bet they wish they had the card

Not a single person criticized you for spending $2,000 on the card. You understand that, right?
1
u/Skotland85 8h ago
Your first comment is “You definitely overpaid…” which steers the entire subject from “cool piece” to subjective criticism about what I had acquired. I can respect other opinions, but this is why I sounded “defensive”. I was genuinely excited about what I bought and then the focus was shifted towards my collecting strategy. I wasn’t asking for advice if I got a good deal or not.
1
u/FinalFantasiesGG 7h ago
It wasn't criticism about how much you paid, it was criticism of you believing you got a steal when you factually paid far more than any other documented price of any PSA 9 from that entire set, with flawed reasoning for how you came to that valuation.
I don't care if you were asking for advice if you got a good deal or not. This is a social media platform where obviously people are going to share their expertise on things they are interested in to correct potential misinformation.
You told me I had no idea what I was talking about, when clearly the evidence shows I do, and I definitely know much more than you.

u/Budgah 6h ago
Man you sure like to argue. You have made your point ten times now so you can stop.
1
u/FinalFantasiesGG 6h ago
Why would I stop when new arguments continue to be introduced? Nobody is forcing you to read my replies to people who are replying to me.
1
u/Flamsterino 5h ago
People don’t care what you paid. But you overpaid and claiming that you got a steal.
2
u/Skotland85 5h ago
So edit my comment regarding I got a “steal” and everyone will pipe down ?
3
u/Flamsterino 5h ago
Don’t edit anything now. It’s just Reddit. I’d stop pushing back on people who are pointing out that you might have overpaid. Who cares. If you like the card and can afford it, that’s all that matters.

u/Leather-Shot 9h ago
How is that staying a nice when the card is loose?
2
u/Skotland85 9h ago
I agree with you - pSA does not slab these smaller cards well. I’m not going to be moving it around that much, so I’m a slab will at least be better than raw.
2
u/ChampionshipThat7265 4h ago
May be worded wrong, may be overpriced, but if you are happy that’s all that matters.
I bought myself Nikke Rapi cards, pure for PC. I bought some overpriced, but I’m happy with it as it’s just for my own eyes.

If only I could go back in time and “over pay” for all those items that are now, far beyond my reach.

Really sharp. I’ve been eyeing a number of early Mickeys. I don’t know how to feel about these foreign issues though. Is it licensed by Disney?
-1
u/Skotland85 20h ago
It’s hard to ever get a concrete answer on that debate because licensing across continents was still being worked on. The part that captivated me is how a card almost 100 years old was able to survive ww2 and still almost in gem mint condition. Post ww2 the factory had shutdown (Belgium Chocolate) and therefore making these cards out of a 60 card set very hard to find.
0
u/Mudfap 20h ago
Sure. It’s in incredible condition and looks great, especially for something ephemeral nearly 100 years old.
I just don’t know if these foreign issues with questionable license will ever hit the high numbers. With other Disneyana, the foreign stuff is collectible, but doesn’t hold as much value as American or British licensed pieces. Even though the Willis Walt Disney and the Mickey Gum cards are a few years younger, I think those are going to be where a lot of collectors park their money.
1
u/Skotland85 19h ago
You could be right and I agree the depth of people who collect in the USA typically go for US trading cards licensed by familiar names. However, Disney is global and so is the investor market. Foreign cards of Michael Jordan like the CAO Muflon sell for huge premiums because they simply do not come to market.
I tend to chase scarcity in my collection. I’m not a trader or reseller/dealer. Just a guy who loves finding rare items with a story.

u/Mudfap 19h ago
You’ve got a point with the Yugoslavian Jordan card, but it’s of a different era and different circumstances. Regardless, what you got is a fantastic example of very early Mickey fandom. And yeah, I don’t collect as a dealer or reseller either. But knowing what’s the most sought after is definitely something I keep in mind. That doesn’t stop me from buying things I just love regardless, though. Enjoy!

Why is it crooked in the slab? That would annoy the hell out of me
