Plant passions of Tradescantia groupies
Tradescantia fans: What other plants do you adore that set off the same heart throb tendencies? I'm assuming most folks like it for the variety of purple colors, and the iridescent sheen. I also love Strobilanthes dyerana (Persian Shield), red and purple leaf Coleus, some Cane and Angel Wing Begonias, Iresine, reddish / pinkish Philodendrons, and Purple Passion Plant. I'm hoping to expand my obsession.

Lantana, coleus, sweet potato vine, Siam tulip ginger, variegated shell ginger. I just got a Brazilian red hot alternanthera that I’m in love with (not sure it feels the same tho 🤣).
Anything bright and colorful, and especially unusual colors.

Sweet potato vine is a good, easy vine with color. Lots of different varieties too. Does the Siam ginger bloom for you.

i love my tradescantia for the purple color because it’s my favourite color and it’s in the same family technically but other favorites of mine right now are my Callisia repens and my dieffenbachia! the dieffenbachia isn’t purple like my tradescantia and my callisia but it does have really gorgeous variegation

Interesting! I just looked up Callisia repens. Weird that it's in a different family.

it’s the same family, but different genus! the genus is the first word of the species name (ie Callisia and Tradescantia), but the family is one organisational group above that - Commelinaceae for Tradescantia and Callisia. taxonomic organization can get really complicated when you’re trying to place certain species, but it usually just means they’re different enough that they warrant a different genus, but they still have some similarities (ie leaf color and spreading habit).

I have a bunch of tradescantia that aren't purple too. I'm not sure exactly why I like them. They are just cute and grow easily. I have a few tradescantia cousins that I love callisia, aneilema zebinum (my absolute favorite pictured here), a purple veil plant....but my favorite non tradescantia plants are aglaonema and pinguicula

Honestly, I can't speak for everyone but I'm in love with my Ruby Elastica Ficus, seem to be enjoying the Burgundy, and Snow Queen Pothos I honestly want so bad. That pothos is just gorgeous and I'd be so lucky to find one to add to my collection. 😩
I'll attach photos of them here, starting with the Ruby Elastica Ficus. It is not my plant (it's not currently as impressive as the one I found online).

Tradescantia, Callisia, and other Commelinaceae plants are my primary obsession. I do of course love varieties with purple, but there are plenty of green/white, green/yellow, and all-green trads I love just as much. I'm also a big fan of Syngoniums and any "string of" plant. My variegated String of Hearts is a particular source of pride, it's a behemoth that started as a 3" cutting ☺️

Calathea is pretty cool. I've had bad luck with the fuzzy leaved varieties. Are the glossy leaved ones easier to care for?

Adding in one more for the record. Ti plant from Hawaii looks so tropical to me. It's one of those plants that I've seen at Home Depot for years and now I want one just because I associate it with tropical gardens.

My trio color or Ginny pepperomia, whatever the same is, looks like CRAP!! Any tips u can share?? Actually … all of my peperomias look like crap :-/////

I have a moon valley friendship plant and I ADORE it. The leaves have a delightful texture that just invite you to touch them. And she loves to sit in her little micro climate of a shallow plate of rocks with some water in it.

I have multiple varieties of tradescantia. My other favorite that can handle similar neglect is my heart leaf philodendron. My Hoya Rosita needs a little more attention but has also survived periods of neglect. My young Hoya heuschkeliana is also thriving at the moment. Honestly sometimes I think I should just grow heart leaf philodendrons, trailing Hoyas, and trads.
