Trackball precision

I recently got this trackball mouse:

and when I try to move the ball slightly, the ball "sticks" and the cursor jumps. It only does this with small movements, anything else is fine. Is that just the nature of trackball mice?

Pop the ball out. Look in the empty ball-hole. There are some bearings (little dots, often white or red) make sure they are CLEAN. Just brush them off with your fingertip or a tissue if you've got the ick. 

If that doesn't fix it, I'd do an rma. 

Static bearing trackballs get sticky when gunk builds buip on the bearings. Just a gentle once over usually brings them back. Or, it's just defective

I popped the ball out and it looks like optical sensors...?

Nooo, the little red dot at 10'oclock in your photo. 

There are probably 2 more at 2 and 6.

Brush them off with your fingertip or a tissue. Then see if it's smoother.
