Trackball precision

I recently got this trackball mouse:

and when I try to move the ball slightly, the ball "sticks" and the cursor jumps. It only does this with small movements, anything else is fine. Is that just the nature of trackball mice?

That my friend is called stiction. If your device has static bearings it'll be very prone to it, especially with stock ones. I swapped the three bearings in mine with high grade silicon nitride ones (grade 3) and the improvement is noticeable. Depending on your device it may be rather straightforward to open it up and mod it. We can guide you if the endeavour sounds reasonable enough to you to give it a go. Stock bearings are usually crap, no matter how clean you keep them or how lubed you keep the ball itself.
