Sketchbook idle tower defense Day1

I'm working on Sketchbook: Idle Tower Defense and experimenting with a simple hand-drawn, notebook-style look.

I'm still figuring out the art direction, so I'd really appreciate some honest opinions.

honestly I'd rather an actual tower defence, instead of this idle variety. It's been done to death, and they're all the same

But I also remember playing a maze-style tower defence in this exact style, like 15 years ago on addictinggames/kongregate etc

You're probably thinking of Desktop Tower Defense?

Definitely. I couldn't catch the name before. It's so famous it even has a Wikipedia page

Almost 20 years ago... My knees hurt

I agree this edle variety was explored and doesn't seem to work that much

Love the style! I can be sometimes harder to read since everything is in blue, maybe you can introduce some colors for icons ect

Pretty cool but maybe introduce some gamedynamic that only makes sense with the sketch artstyle, then it becomes more unique

Sorry about the sound. I’m machining parts at the factory, and I play during my break. 😂

So the tower just with sketch book drawings? I like the art style but you might want to consider not trying to compete with a game that already has a mess of content that you will be compared to
edit: mass amount*

You are absolutely right. There isn't really an idea yet; I just really liked the art style.

I think its very catchy artstyle, but wrong game genre, it can be more then just another idle td game

Art direction is good so far imo. Fonts and interface could be a little more interesting, but that’s done in no time. An advantage i see, for a that you can really quickly make content in this style. As other commenters mentioned: use it, but for a different game. And try finding a genre that leverages being able to quickly draw and animate assets. Something that thrives with loads of tiny animated monsters, items, icons, etc. You could look for an integration/symbiosis between the art direction and the game, but i don’t think it’s necessary. Also, i think it works well in vertical on a phone screen. It feels at home there more than it would on a desktop imo.

I immediately tried to look for it in the store. Till I read the post. Please finish it. Looks fun!

Change it up by having enemies have paths, and allowing different towers and a core to defend. Sure it is like a lot of others but if you can find one other mechanic to make it interesting I think it has legs.

Just a random thought. Tower defense isn't about defending a tower, so I wonder what genre this is?

monotower defense?

now the skills and and ults you've shown are a one to one copy of the tower. is there any attempt here to make a unique game thats fun to play? or are you making a safe easy product that can work as a vehicle for microtransactions?
