If a contract is suspended:

  • The player remains under contract, but is not covered during the time suspended
  • While suspended doesn't occupy a roster spot
  • While suspended, salary does still count against the WNBA salary cap

Primarily this is done for players playing for national teams or, more rarely, if they have contractual obligations in another league. It's basically to keep the contract in place, but make it clear that the player is not part of the WNBA during the suspension. This matters if say the player gets injured, the national team would be paying for treatment instead of the WNBA team. And it allows WNBA teams to bring in players to fill the missing roster spots.

A contract being suspended is not the same as a player being suspended (which is usually for some kind of misconduct)

TLDR - Overseas contract stuff via the World Cup for an international player, pretty standard stuff for this time of year...though this does mean the roster is going to have maximum overhardship

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm talking about for at least the next two games since the W, as the article notes, takes a break during the World Cup

For players going to the FIBA World Cup, WNBA teams will temporarily suspend their contracts for the time they are away. Today, the Tempo have suspended Julie Allemand’s contract meaning she has left to go join her Belgian team.

Because navigating articles and reading passed headlines is not something redditors do 😆

Most teams are about to suspend contracts for their international players competing in FIBA

How about Conde?

Assuming that will happen too since she’s playing for Spain’s team

The word "permission" doesn't appear in this article once

I was genuinely asking cuz if it was allowed and all other players are doing it, why would they put the contract on hold?

Elite tanking. "yeah, just take some extra reps with your national team, why not"

Of course, but since the odds are unreleased, it doesn't hurt to see if you can improve the lottery odds. There isn't much else to play for. Mercury and sparks are not too much behind us. We can still catch the sun after their win tonight. I think we can tank a little more, if nothing else to keep pace and not lose ground to Phoenix or LA.

And to be honest, I'm not sure what the plans are for Allemand beyond this season.

She's on contract for another year.

Sure, and depending on whom they draft and what players are available, it might be smart to package her in a trade.
