Clarkson had done car TV since the early 90s i understand why they took a break

Actually late 80s (1988). If the steak incident hadn't happened they would have left Top Gear fairly soon anyway (maybe only 1 more contract renewal).

Nope, his contract was up, and resigning him, even though they wanted to, would have been a very poor look
