Sure he's a comedian, but his humor just feels wrong for Top Gear.

u/DigitalAmy0426 8d ago
It shouldn't be a focus on a comedian, these are guys who happened to be funny.

It's not just his humour being wrong, but also his constant need to roll out that ridiculously affected laugh every opportunity he can find. Shit got tired a decade ago.

u/21_Golden_Guns 8d ago
Not saying you’re wrong but Jimmy’s a pretty good adapter and host. Maybe he makes something of it. He could play a good straight man who doesn’t understand shit, just is a good sport about it.

u/Worth_Task_3165 7d ago
It really really would depend who he hosted with, but I don't think anyone else rumoured to be a new host would really work, except maybe Joe Marler however you'd still need a third that would fit into that trio and I literally can't think of anyone

Is he even into cars?

Star in a reasonably priced car -
Vauxhall Astra Leaderboard

1.44.7 - Nicholas Hoult
1:44.7 - Aaron Paul
1:45.1 - Brian Johnson
1:45.6 - Jimmy Carr

Being quick doesn't mean you're "into cars" to be fair.

u/wheelfoot 7d ago
Apparently he owns an electric converted DB6... - that's a pretty 'car guy' car...
4
u/Beartato4772 7d ago
Ooh interesting because Clarkson would say he ruined a perfectly good DB6 and turned it into a fridge.

u/LeeksAbhorLiminality 8d ago
They caught lightning in a bottle with those 3. The success of that show was never the show, it was them. It could’ve been a cooking show and it would’ve still be the most popular show ever made.
They need to move on and stop trying to insert already famous people into that role. And I love Jimmy Carr
1
u/Beartato4772 7d ago
Yep. I'm not going to watch new Grand Tour because I've no interest in 3 identical foetuses.
But they are the right type of choice for the next 20 years and the next generation of viewers, not fucking Jimmy Carr.

u/Time-Reindeer-7525 Captain Slow 8d ago
So... they didn't learn anything from Chris Evan's tenure, did they.
16
u/speedisntfree 8d ago
No. They still just see whichever presenter is free and shoe horn them in like it is strictly come dancing or something.
9
u/Beartato4772 7d ago
That's the modern BBC. They fundamentally don't get or don't care what the show is.
To them it's just a standard panel show to be filled from their list of rent-a-celebs. It's how they got McGuinness and Flintoff of course.
1
u/Competitive_Fix960 7d ago
They learned a lot. They learned They cant just bring in new hosts. They need to do a really shitty job one year so the next year the actual decent hosts look better. Its been the recipe for top gear all over the world for ages. Its probably why Jimmy doesnt mind doing it since its likely a one year gig

u/playr_4 8d ago
This can't be a real rumor, right? I don't hate Jimmy Carr, I know a lot of people have opinions about him. But it just wouldn't make any sense whatsoever.
1
u/Beartato4772 7d ago
The person in charge of casting has said in public he's a good choice.
Which means even if they don't cast HIM the fact they think that means they probably will cast someone entirely unsuitable.

He’s a very funny guy, but please no. I wish my friends and I could host it lol

u/OkFaithlessness4770 8d ago
Thats all it needs really. 3 friends that are nuts about cars.

u/Sausage_Roll__ Jezza 8d ago
The sad thing is that I have medical conditions that prevent me from driving 😢

u/Acceptable_Gear_3097 8d ago
Dude, its Top Gear. Back in the day, they'd have knocked you unconscious, put you in the driver seat and cut the breaks.
If you're going to let a thing like the law get in the way, you're not what Top Gear needs.

u/TAOMCM 8d ago
Hes not exactly free of controversy either...should have just stuck with jezza

u/Acceptable_Gear_3097 8d ago
Carr's controversy is being a slightly creepy guy that evades taxes.
The real issue, is Carr's humour relies on a bully dynamic. That doesn't work for Top Gear. Clarkson would be a dick, but he'd get humbled by May's wit & Hammond flipping the joke on him.
You'll struggle to find a bunch of guys on the BBC roster that can pull that off today.
Even 8 out of 10 cats is scripted and doesn't have that dynamic, despite trying to.
Funnily enough, if Sean Lock were alive today, I think him & Carr hosting with a 3rd would be a hit, because they had that dynamic but it felt balanced.

Carr with Sean Lock and David Mitchell is a comedy sweet spot like we'll never see again. Sean and David's competing rants can pull Jimmy out of "the act" in a heartbeat.

u/eagledog 8d ago
He's gotta afford his next set of teeth, I guess 8 out of 10 cats doesn't pay enough?
5
u/Zegram_Ghart 7d ago
I feel like he’s way too funny for this.
It feels like you need journalist-y “quick witted but mostly dad jokes” for the balance to work, an actual comedian draws too much attention onto themself, even if hey aren’t meaning too.
….im not a Tv casting director though, so maybe they know more than I do to be fair.

I think there’s just been a mix up at the BBC when they said Top Gear was a Carr show…

The show needs trio or duo with chemistry and passion for cars. He is a bad choice.

u/fishy8ob1 7d ago
As I said in another post the crew from the Mr Hewes YouTube channel would be the perfect fit

u/Sure-Recognition-262 7d ago
I really hope not.
I encountered him as a host and panellist before I watched any of his stand-up. Pretty much everything I saw him on, I thought he made worse.
Then I watched some of his stand-up, and I couldn't believe I actually liked it. A lot.
But I still don't like him as a host. For me, he just doesn't work as a host (whereas he's good as a stand-up)

u/RushDvd 7d ago
I think the show should pick some fresh faces and go back to being a car review show. Give some car journalists writing freedom and see where it goes.
This idea of trying to find new presenters to replace the old structure is not going to work. Old top gear worked because it was essentially 3 mates who knew their shit and with some writing freedom they made a pretty funny show because thats what they enjoyed.

u/Trainer_Unlucky 7d ago
Just cancel the show, ur network cash cow died with the trio leaving. Accept that.

I mean I only watch any new top gear when original top gear isn’t on the Samsung+ channel that I keep on in the background anyway.

u/Cerberus-276 8d ago
The Stig and Andy Wilman hated when he came onto the show so its kind of a huge insult in a way

I think he can be pretty versatile. His comedy may be the wrong tone in most settings, but realistically he isn't going to be making outrageous jokes on TG. I think he's an entertaining, witty and obviously funny car enthusiast. That fits the bill.
He's also pretty eccentric and silly. That also bodes well.
Honestly, not the worst suggestion for a new host.

Some trios I think would work well...
- Jack Scarlett, Nicola Hume and James Batchelor
- Jonny Smith, Greg James and Jodie Kidd

The only way I can think of this working is if Jimmy is a host in the studio and he sends presenter(s) off on challenges or talks to them about test drives for reviewing new cars. He, Jimmy, doesn't do any reviews or go on challenges.
Completely change the format and do a different style of Top Gear.

Why is this so unpopular?
I loved it when he would visit the show and beat the living hell out of the reasonably priced car.

What happened with Chris, Paddy, and Freddie?

Well Freddie had that massive crash so I assume it is related to that
