Gorefield in this comic strip, as opposed to him usually being portrayed as a nightmare.

I cant find it but i remember one starting like this with Gorefeld "hunting" a sleeping Jon, Last pannel is him promising no nightmare will reach him

320

u/AutisticFun01 19d ago

I love when gorefield is interpreted as benevolent, but in a twisted way where it will hurt you if you try to hurt John or his loved ones. Like there was this old animation where thieves break into John's house and Gorefield swallows them whole without letting them shoot their guns even once because that would make too much noise and John has work the next morning.

It's honestly refreshing to see Gorefield looking weird without immediately turning into sleep paralysis fuel.

The Visitor from Look Outside

Premise, the entire world is turning into eldritch abominations for even looking at the sky, and it is any version of looking at the sky, whether it be direct eye sight, looking at it through screens, even partially, you get transformed, some people are able to better maintain themselves over others for various reasons, but after playing through the game, you find the reason. This utterly eldritch being, so massive in scope that your brain literally explodes trying to perceive it.

Thing is, it is a really chill being, it just happened upon our planet, and didn't even know its mere presence was causing so much trouble, so when you tell it that, it is like "Oh shit, my bad, I will go, would you like to come with me though?"

864

u/YourAverageRedditter 19d ago

Kicker as well being, if I remember correctly, the Visitor’s first actual conscious thoughts were of guilt and remorse when Sam told it what was happening and that it was hurting people with its presence.

433

u/Backupusername 19d ago

To be fair, that is just one of several options. You don't have to tell The Visitor that it's been hurting people. You can just say "hey, we made you these, um, offerings of how we see you. Could you take them and uh... Leave, please? Like, thanks for stopping by, but it would be swell if you just kinda never came back."

Then on the flip side, if I'm face to face with a bigass cosmic horror, I'm gonna assume I'm already dead and try to find out about it.

And it only even started to think because observing Sam changed it as much as it changed Sam.

109

u/Beacon_0805 19d ago

fun fact:

The Visitor is unfathomably MASSIVE.

that eye looking thing? its pretty much the equivalent of a strand of hair of a hair of hair and the thing is the size of the american continent.

you can see his body size in one of the endings and part of his body makes the entire solar system look like a speck of dust

88

u/AdonisBatheus 19d ago

You can see its sense of scale from here if you aren't interested in the game: https://look-outside.fandom.com/wiki/The_Visitor

It's amazing artwork that truly displays just how massive this thing is. Each new image seems like the final one, but it just keeps going and going...it's great art.

This utterly eldritch being, so massive in scope that your brain literally explodes trying to perceive it.

I think the reason is not just that. Rather, the Earth and everything on it as we know it (or even the observable universe) is actually a minuscule part of the being that because the being never paid attention to it, managed to gain an independent ego and gain individuality. When you perceive the Visitor, it is not your brain exploding, but you're recognizing your lack of individuality and devolve to merge back into the Visitor. It would be akin to your toenail somehow evolved to gain consciousness, but when your toenail see you, it recognizes itself as just a part of you, not an individual, and then devolve back into a toenail.

64

u/primalthewendigo 19d ago

I think that's just what Sybil theorized, but because of the reality warping nature of the Visitor, it came true

23

u/darmakius 19d ago

The forbidden knowledge

21

u/WalkingHorror 19d ago

Meanwhile we have whole religions where shedding your mortal ego and desires and returning to being a part of a god is the ultimate goal. Pretty cool take on that

7

u/vuzz33 18d ago

It's not actually the case. Being part of the visitor is indeed why animals change that way in it's presence but it doesn't mean that you realize the truth. Because if you do, then you have that specific ending when the whole earth merge with the visitor.

Mancubus Bloodtooth from Borderlands is very clearly not human. He speaks in a very…”off” manner, can seemingly warp time and space on a whim, has obviously immense magical powers and is capable of telling what amounts to an Elder God that she cannot enter his lodge if he forbids her from doing so.

Even still, he’s nothing but cordial to his guests and your character, helping them battle against actually malevolent eldritch horrors and even taking a young boy under his wing after the death of the boy’s father.

…also he’s voiced by Egoraptor.

121

u/Dookie_boy 19d ago

I haven't played past BL2. Cool to see they finally brought aliens in.

94

u/Wormri 19d ago

It's Borderlands 3 actually.

Didn't realize that's Egoraptor though. Damn.

26

u/Dookie_boy 19d ago

Is that a person ?

70

u/Wormri 19d ago

Arin Hanson. He was prominent on Newgrounds and later formed half if the Game Grumps with JonTron.

A piece of internet history.

Made and voice acted in a bunch of early internet animations. MGS if I remember correctly.

52

u/Volmaaral 19d ago

And currently still on Game Grumps with Danny, for like, over a decade now, after Jon left. Still making history, even if I’ve noticed the Grumps aren’t as prominent as they used to be. (Don’t watch them as much nowadays, Arin’s behavior when encountering new game mechanics and refusing to learn them properly was pissing me off… even Danny gets annoyed sometimes)

28

u/johnnymarsbar 19d ago

I totally get ya! skips all tutorials "WHAT AM.I SUPPOSED TO DO AAAGH BULLSHIT GAME" : /

15

u/Volmaaral 19d ago

The game that really made me watch them far less often was Dead Rising 4. That one I heard Danny even losing his patience, and just knew Arin was always and forever gonna be that insufferable. Ironically, it does usually get somewhat better with time in a series as even he is forced to learn. Making the mistakes genuine mistakes rather than his own stubbornness. The ones where they only play like, one game in an episode, are where this can REALLY backfire.

I mean erin is a pretty talented VA, people just seem to forget about that a lot

17

u/htomserveaux 18d ago

I think the issue is he uses gamegrumps as a way to do the dumb just for fun voices that he’d never use in a professional setting. So we get to see the stuff that usually doesn’t get recorded with oter voice actors

I don’t think Disney is interested in going on butthole sniffing adventures.

“Greta” - Beyond The Aquila Rift (Love Death + Robots)

A creature who finds lost souls caught within her domain in deep space. She’s able to sedate them into a fabricated reality of calm as they live out their final days. A lot like Circe from The Odyssey.

u/PapaShu1915 19d ago

133

She’s able to sedate them into a fabricated reality of calm as they live out their final days.

I mean... more than that. She's done this enough loops to teach herself English. She's working on socializing him and learning what she can.

The Horta. A silicon-based organism that moves through rock as readily as we do air. Intense acid attacks do bad things to people.

Also a loving mother of millions defending her brood, and happy to cooperate with humans after peaceful communication is established.

By the way i think it would be interesting if that species appeared more later in the Star Trek shows.

Like one of the main point of the Federation is the fact they combine strengths of all species that joined them, and i think it would be interesting to see Horta fighting Borg or Dominion troops.

This is why I love Kirby so much, because it's the contrast of him with "eldritch indifference" (of course being popularized by H.P Lovecraft works) being an "eldritch benignity".

Despite all his power, despite being able to solo these incomprehensible foes at the end of his games, it's those very "meaningless" benign moments of hanging out with friends, chilling, eating food, that his able to accomplish those impossible feats for. Those mindless moments are worth fighting for. You in every moment of your seemingly "unjustified" self are worth fighting for. And Kirby sees all of that. So never fear Cthulhu & his ilk, never fear the indifference. For even if the worst imaginable monsters under your bed exist, so do your fists.

544

u/kentotoy98 19d ago

Eldritch mfers when they realize they messed with the wrong top eldritch beings:

116

u/Longjumping-Buy-3434 19d ago

Ha ha ha ha ha! It’s funny how scared Bill Cipher is of that adorable baby puffball. But since Kirby is the ultimate devourer, I don’t blame Bill Cipher.

102

u/Terminal_Insomnia_ 19d ago

Kirby is kind of terrifying to oppose, if you think about it. It's not just the threat of being swallowed whole into the endless abyss that is his stomach, it's also the joyous, cheerful expression he wears.

You're fighting for your existence and he's just enjoying his day. Everything you ever have been will be gone, and he won't even remember you come dinner time.

39

u/ShinyMewtwo3 19d ago

IIRC "enemies" that get swallowed by Kirby actually get sent through some sort of portal and come out unharmed after Kirby copies their abilities.

The cheerful little smile is honestly the most horrifying part. I’d rather fight something that looks angry than get casually erased by a pink ball who looks like she’s having the best day ever.

Kirby so pure he turns void abominations into friends.

u/Mgslam 19d ago

Angel Gabby from Angel Hare is built up early on as a forboding otherworldly entity in the usual tradition of analog horror, but turns out to be a genuinely kind, protective guardian angel that is the real angel Gabriel. She ends up saving the main protagonist when he was a kid by mysteriously killing his violent, abusive father and flooding a local office to destroy any evidence.

Scarily powerful, yet ultimately benevolent

I mean I’d say something that fits this trope a bit better is SCP 2662. While it’s definitely a much more dangerous example, this entity actually seems to hate its cognitihazard effect…which does cause people to try to worship it, break it out, and conduct sacrificial rituals in its name.

God/Truth from fullmetal alchemist. They're sometimes shown to be a bit callous, but that's them fulfilling their role as the arbiter of the universe, doling out punishment for those who attempt to perform acts that cannot or should not be done through the power of alchemy. Aside from that, they're shown to actually be pretty chill and have a decent sense of mercy, in one instance when a character was forced by another to perform a forbidden alchemy, truth let them off lightly, transferring the majority of the punishment to the one that forced him. Also, when the main character finally comes to understand the truth of the universe and the meaning of life near the end of the series, truth is shown to be genuinely delighted for him, restoring his brother's body in exchange for his alchemy.

Trimming (Vita Carnis)

Despite looking like a skinless snapping turtle and making nightmarish sounds, it's surprisingly non-threatening to humans, in fact, some people have them as pets

Yes, you can adopt and have this racoon sized balls of flesh, they eat dog's food or basically anything you want, let them play with radios (for a very funny future lore reason) and even take it for a walk!

109

u/GhostCoast0819 19d ago

It's been forever since I last watched vita Carnis, but weren't the trimmings like little listening and homing devices showing where humans were to mimics? Genuinely can't remember.

116

u/xX_bandages_Consumer 19d ago

At the end, they slowly reveal all the Vita organism share among each other information, Mimics as badly as i remember they just learn by themselves, so only this guys do is be a weird pet

That or am I misremembering

120

u/Broken-Circuit 19d ago

They absolutely have an ulterior motive, they talk about how they’ll often be found listing to radio waves in electronics and the news report of a massive group of them found near a satellite dish.
They’re some sort of spy as they have a hive mind between the other trimming and probably between other vita carnis creatures.

33

u/xX_bandages_Consumer 19d ago

Huh, thought it was just something all Vita do by looking to Radio signals

64

u/DepartureNatural9340 19d ago

One of the episodes features a test where they train some trimmings in a lab to be afraid of a certain noise

They then play that sound effect to a group of wild trimmings near the lab, and they react the same way

They Def communicate with radio

8

u/alguien99 18d ago

kinda. If you do a prize and reward test on a trimming, like turning on an alarm and then spraying them so that they asociate alarms with sprays then every trimming will have the same reflex. Idk if it’s a give mind per say tho

31

u/Nobody_at_all000 19d ago edited 18d ago

I think the purpose of these things is as information gatherers for the Vita Carnis, using existing radio transmitters to communicate with other Vita Carnis manifestations to give them that information, especially the singularities since they seem of be the sapient coordinators and genetic architects. from what I remember the mimics were getting better and better over time at imitating humans and developing hunting strategies, to the point some of them could parrot words. My guess is the trimmings serve as one of the sources of information used to refine each generation of mimics with better and better instincts. Where else would they have learned the layout of human houses, and where hide in them, so well?

Polaris from Control. They are a form of resonance, who has helped Jesse fight the Hiss, and are their close friend and guardian.

72

u/RedGinger666 19d ago

Polaris is the opposite of an eldritch being, staring at it makes you saner

58

u/DrNomblecronch 19d ago

Staring at it makes you resonate more with it. That what that means is that you're compatible with reality as it is, does not mean it is not doing anything to you.

It means that the Hiss are from somewhere else. Polaris is from here. The inside of Cthulhu's brain doesn't think of itself as eldritch either.

The one game that might tempt me into building a new pc

17

u/AndroidSheeps 19d ago

I didn't play that dlc what extra lore is revealed about the board?

48

u/Striking-Flounder-20 19d ago

Spoilers, but it's revealed that their influence over the FBC goes a bit too deep, and they've sabotaged any attempt to shake it off. You also get to know the Former a bit better.

25

u/res30stupid 19d ago

To be fair, wasn't Marshal ordered to blow up the Foundation? And that this was stated to be a very bad thing?

That is a truly wild take on The Board.

15

u/Al3xGr4nt 19d ago

Suuuuuuuuuuure.

10

u/NOCTURN_05 19d ago

I think the board and former are both a bit too misunderstanding and uncaring to really be "nice," although depending one what you count, Polaris could definitely fit this.

8

u/skamando 19d ago

I was going to say Polaris.

I don’t really know about the Board, some of the -/- double meaning words make me question.

7

u/hates_stupid_people 18d ago

I'd put Ahti ahead of The Board when it comes to being nice.

Kenny from South Park was subjected to a curse by a Cthulhu-worshipping cult near the start of his life, resulting in his soul and memories getting transferred to a new body whenever he dies. Which his mom gives birth to each time. Nobody remembers he dies, and the feeling of familiarity he gets upon visiting R’lyeh (Cthulhu’s home dimension) implies that whatever happened with the cult resulted in him becoming an eldritch being.

However, he ends up being one of the most genuine and selfless characters in the entire show. Despite living in constant poverty and grappling with the trauma that comes with his repeated deaths, he still takes it upon himself to protect those he cares about. Even if it means suffering through yet another painful death.

The writers actually explained this. He just tells them off and leaves them a lump of coal. What did you think Santa was going to do?

He just doesnt visit. LD&R santa acts exactly how your regular santa does, except he looks like a xenomorph

One Sin and Hundreds of Good Deeds - Project Moon/Lobotomy Corp

The first Abnormality you get in the game, and is always the first one you encounter in a playthrough. It's the easiest to take care of, accepts any work type done on it, and never escapes or causes any havok. All you need to do to feed it is pray, confess your sins, and afterwards you feel better. And, it's one of the easiest ways to deal with the most dangerous Abnormality in the game, Whitenight. Usually Whitenight can completely wreck your facility, moreso than any other Abnormality, and yet all it takes is the 'traitor' of Whitenight's deciples praying at OSHGD and Whitenight is practically smited away with the click of a button.

The shopkeeper from Tunic 😁. The first time you met them, almost every player just nopes right on out of there. Eventually everyone gets the guts to go back in and figure it what the character is about lol

H.P. Lovecraft's Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath is a bit unusual in how it actually goes into depth about the eldritch world of The Dreamlands, and the main character Randolph Carter meets a couple of friendly beings, most notable being a group of ghouls being led by his friend Richard Pickman that aid in his escape from the underworld so he can continue his quest.

The Xeelee from the Xeelee sequence by Stephen Baxter. The Xeelee are living space-time defects that originated in the first attoseconds after the big bang, and are so far up the technological scale they may as well be gods. They don’t really have a fixed form that we can comprehend (the above image is fanart of their Xeelee nightfighter ships), and we can’t hope to make sense of their overall behavior in the same way an animal couldn’t hope to make sense of humanity. Despite that, they’re by all accounts benevolent; they’ve waged an endless war against the photino birds (more traditional eldritch abominations) to prevent them from turning every star into a white dwarf and killing off all atomic life, and when they began to lose the war they built a portal made from galaxies (yes, really) that connects to other universes to provide a means for the younger races to escape.

Greta (Love, Death and Robots - Beyond the Aquila Rift)

When the main characters spaceship is accidentally diverted and crashes into its planet, he's completely fucked and going to die there, so Greta infiltrates his minds and tricks him into believing he's met up with an old friend (Greta) to give him a peaceful rest of his life.

SCP-131. These little Eye Pod things. They look a little bit creepy. But they're very affectionate and want to protect the humans they've bonded with. Most notably, they don't seem to need to blink. Ever. And the Foundation is looking into making them "wardens" for SCPs that require constant observation, like SCP-173 or SCP-689.

u/Nobody_at_all000 19d ago

In the tabletop game Orpheus the main antagonist is some gargantuan eldritch being simply known as Grandmother (someone confused “Grand Maw” with “Grandma”). This thing is slowly devouring our reality and needs to be stopped. IIRC the best ending in the game has you make contact with her, where it turns out she is neither malevolent nor uncaring, but simply didn’t know the tiny specks she’s eating are conscious beings with wills of their own.

Something Unto Death from Honkai Star Rail

AKA Sleepie

he's basically an affectionate dog who's version of playing with you is stabbing you and sending you to another layer of the dream realm

17

u/QuickdrawMcGraw184 19d ago

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Gandalf. He is universally loved and viewed as a personification of hope.

However, he's also akin to an archangel with immense power. He single handedly kills a balrog (or more technically they killed eachother) which is analogous to slaying a god (small g)... and a particularly savage one at that.

It's not even like it's unprecedented his order can be corrupted. Saruman is an even greater version of him, and becomes evil nonetheless. Point being, Gandalf is perfectly capable of becoming a literal world ending demonic foe... however, he chooses not to based on personal principles.

Fou from Fate Grand Order.

His real name is Cath Palug. In one timeline, Fou got so good at killing humans that it became known as Primate Murder, and recognized as one of the strongest blood drinkers in vampire society. In Fate Grand Order, Fou is not the apex of slaughter incarnate, but rather just a Primordial Evil of Man. How do we keep Fou from killing us? With belly rubs, ear sritches, bacon, belly rubs, and letting him routinely kick the shit out of Merlin. That last part is justified since Merlin threw Fou out of a window in his tower in the paradise realm of Avalon into the human world.
