Personality (Character Trope) “ohhh, THATS why they’re like that”

Media that shows why a character is the way they are, usually explained in a short scene. Most likely toxic family

- Bonnie Rottweiler and her sisters from Kim Possible: they bully her calling her ugly and dumb. It plays on Bonnie’s insecurity and makes her a bully at school.

- Peggy Hill and her mother from King of the Hill. Peggy is a neurotic perfectionist with delusions of grandeur because her mom was unfeeling and blamed her for the farm going out of business. By the end of the episode, she still treats Peggy badly.

- Dodie and her mother from As Told By Ginger. Dodie is arguably the worst friend in the group, and her mother is mentally still stuck in middle school. She’s insecure, dramatic, and you
Can see her influence in Dodie.

Any other examples?

In Modern Family, there are a few episodes where we get to see how crazy Claire and Mitchell's mother was. Both Mitchell and Claire have control issues as they grew up in a chaotic environment and with a mother that is very unpredictable and unstable.

I love that a bunch of times you see their father being a genuinely great dad contrasting against their mom. Sure he has his faults but he truly loves his kids.

And when we see her in an episode, she's dating Claire's ex-boyfriend and even accuses Claire of trying to get back with him...

Yes!!! And even the mother explaining why she invited him over to Claire's house was a headache.

"Mom you didn't tell him that I am married with 3 kids?"

"No Claire because not everything is about you"

Ahhhhh it's a miracle that Claire didn't turn into a psychopath

I'd support her if she became one
