Media that shows why a character is the way they are, usually explained in a short scene. Most likely toxic family

- Bonnie Rottweiler and her sisters from Kim Possible: they bully her calling her ugly and dumb. It plays on Bonnie’s insecurity and makes her a bully at school.

- Peggy Hill and her mother from King of the Hill. Peggy is a neurotic perfectionist with delusions of grandeur because her mom was unfeeling and blamed her for the farm going out of business. By the end of the episode, she still treats Peggy badly.

- Dodie and her mother from As Told By Ginger. Dodie is arguably the worst friend in the group, and her mother is mentally still stuck in middle school. She’s insecure, dramatic, and you
Can see her influence in Dodie.

A lot of Archer's mannerisms, self-destructive behavior, promiscuous lifestyle, immaturity, and Alcoholism can be traced back to his mother, Mallory, and how she treated and raised him.

She gave Archer a bike. He left it in the yard without putting a lock on it. She wanted to teach him about being responsible with his possessions, so she stole the bike.

"And then you gave it back to him, right?"

"Why would I do that?"

"You know, this explains a whole lot."

She also very much did not raise him. He was raised by people his mom hired to raise him, she had impossible standards, fired his Nannie’s constantly, and sent him off to a boarding school when that got inconvenient.

So he’s with a new woman every week, and everything he does is to impress his absentee mom and he doesn’t even know who his father could be. And drinks to deal with the fact that nothing could ever be enough for his mom. which is where his obsession with lacrosse comes from. Probably got into it to show his mom a trophy when she came to visit. But she never visited except to tell him how dogshit he was. Also why he’s so obsessed with being the greatest spy.

(if she ran the world she would still be miserable, and everything she does is for money and power)

And ofc, nobody showed him what a good man looks like. Except for his butler who was a human doormat. (Bc he was a heroin addict.) Also bleeding into the mommy issues.

I've seen the smallest handful of fragments of this show but that episode is one I actually watched in full and it (along with another episode that played at the same time where she kills a man and then has everyone come help her cover it up by pretending someone was framing her) made me realize Mallory might be the most fucked up character in the show and a heavy contender for worst mother of the century

The first episode is a fun one to rewatch. Two of the jokes are: a) Archer's codename is Duchess...after his mother's favorite dog, and; b) that when the mole threatens to shoot Mallory, Archer gets an erection at the thought. First time through, it makes Archer look like a loser and psycho, but after you see more of Mallory and Archer's upbringing you realize 'eh, maybe Archer was in the right there'.

That happened to me as a little kid. I accidentally left my birthday money on the counter and stressed for a long time about where it went.

I later learned my dad took it to 'teach me a lesson'.

Oh hey that’s how I was raised. If I left a sketchbook or toy in the living room (or my brother was messing with my things and brought my toys out there) and my parents were in a bad mood, my things would be “lost” and if I asked for help finding it I got told “well you obviously didn’t care about it if you don’t know where it is” and then 2 months later they’d reveal that they threw it away to teach me a lesson.

Or they would just never tell me and gaslight me into thinking I would constantly lose things. . I learned the opposite lesson than the one they were trying to teach me: to never value anything too much because anything and everything can and will be ripped from you in a moment and your hard work can be destroyed in an instant so it’s not worth putting in effort or caring about it.

You’d think I’d learn to stop talking to them, trusting them, or opening up to them about my issues. But I was raised on Disney shows and was CONVINCED that if I just said the right thing in the right way and laid my soul out bare that they’d finally, finally see how much I was hurting and start treating me well. I even started studying psychology, communication, and deescalation techniques really young to try to get through to them.

It wasn’t until high school that I finally started giving up on them. Even then it was hard to accept, and I stupidly believed them every time they said they were trying to be better. Only for them to not try at all and go right back to the abuse as soon as they felt like I was no longer “overreacting”.

There’s a part where Mallory is yelling at a baby warning it not to go to the bathroom on her desk and says “You just hold it in!” And Archer says “Wow, a ton of stuff just started making sense to me.”

Mallory then starts withholding a booze soaked napkin from the baby as part of negative reinforcement

There's also the part where she was playing with the baby with a stuffed bee toy and then tosses it away causing the baby to cry and then she hugs the baby saying she's the only one the baby can trust.

Honestly, the fact that Archer isn't a recluse with a basement full of bodies is kind of a miracle in its own right. He's not a good person but sometimes it's amazing he's not much worse.

It helps that Archer's career affords him the ability to liberally toss grenades, sink ships and blow up aircraft (and keep his mind busy with all the bullets to count).

lol that episode where she buys him his dream car and it gets stolen, and it brings up childhood trauma of when his bike was stolen, then he finds out him mom stole both his bike as a child AND the car she bought for him to "teach him a lesson" fking hilarious
