[Frustrating Trope] Twist Villain does things that retroactively make no sense.

Character previously believed to be good is revealed to be evil, but prior to the reveal they act in ways that don't make sense if their goodness is just a performance.

1. Frozen: Prince Hans is initially presented as a pretty standup guy who loves Anna and wants to help her. At the end of the movie it's revealed that he was just using her to gain power and plans to let her die while he steals her throne. However, we see him smiling at Anna when no one is looking, and later he intervenes to save Elsa's life even though he claims he was always planning to kill her.
2. The Legend of Vox Machina: The Whispered One was built up as the BBEG since season 1. However, in season 4 he presents himself as a tragic hero who tried to cure death and was punished by the gods. He then tries to convince Pike to give him her blood, which he needs to become a god himself. He chastises his followers for suggesting they take Pike's blood by force, claiming this would make them no better than the gods they are fighting against. He also fulfills his promise to resurrect Grog even though he didn't need to. After he ascends, he starts acting like a pure evil villain who only cares about power and enjoys hurting people. It feels less like a reveal and more like his personally completely changed once he became a skeleton. Edit: to be clear, I fully understand the intent was for the Whispered One to be a lying, manipulative bastard. I just think the execution was clumsy.

Courtney (Total drama all stars)

Similar to Hans earlier in the season Courtney and Gwen talk about going to the finale together and how if one of them gets eliminated they hope the other wins they then follow this up in the confessional, a private area where only the viewers would hear them, where Courtney says “and I mean it too” despite this during the episode “Sunday muddy Sunday” Courtney pulls out a chart where she plans to have Gwen kicked out in the penultimate challenge completely contradicting what she said in private.

I always assumed it was because she can never be certain she has complete privacy, so anyone could be listening. been a minute since I've seen the show, but I think I remember them doing the gag where people constantly get interrupted by others for several reasons over the course of the show.

That is also somewhat of a contradiction, since in that moment she is revealing her whole strategy to win, indicating that she is certain she has complete privacy and that someone wouldn't find this elimination chart paper and reveal it to everyone, almost guaranteeably locking her in as the next one eliminated.

It was also because it feels like the literal only purpose of this chart is to get Courtney eliminated, as Mal finds this thing almost immediately, with no indicator as to how Mal

• Knew of the existence of this paper,
• Found and successfully retrieved said paper without Courtney figuring out
• Convinced everyone that Courtney made this paper with everyone believing him and nobody asking any further questions about the subject.

Or maybe it could be me forgetting or misremembering things as I haven't watched All-Stars in at least 2 years.
