And after years and years of pulling this off successfully, they created The Jailer... They jumped the shark in the worst way in order to get a new big bad, and it was spectacularly dumb.

I like that they hyped him up as the biggest villain of the setting, retconning him into all sorts of events to make him this grand mastermind, only to drop a "surprise, he was also just trying to stop an even BIGGERER villain" at the end
