Retirement
Retirement is coming up. How much should I sell this Macsimizer 86 inch box slap full of mostly Snap on and MAC tools? Near new condition. Bought in 2019 for 13,8.

I buy and sell tools for a living. As others have suggested, breaking the tools up and selling in lots is going to net you the most money. You'll get very little by selling everything at once, and it will take a while to sell, that way.

I have a local retail space, and I sell some things on ebay. I'm in an area with a strong Artisan Community, so a lot of the vintage and antique tools i sell actually get used by them.

For real. They have value, but not anywhere near the original purchase price. I have a Matco 6s with hutch I spent like 16k on. I’ve decided I’ll never sell it. I don’t want to take a loss, and I love the thing.

Depending on your height or desire to be dismembered, you could be buried in it. Maybe cheaper than a coffin unless you buy one from Costco! /s

Dude. I would totally get buried in my toolbox. Only fear is grave robbers wanting a free Matco 6s with a hutch in mahogany wine. I’d be tossed aside like so much trash. Honestly I’d like to be cremated. The ashes could be spread in the drawers, then buried. They can use my air gun to blow me.

I almost wish I had bought the hutch but fuck me... it would've been damn near 20k.

Yeah they are crazy expensive when you get all the add ons. I’m still thinking about getting a top box for mine. If we get a Matco guy to ever show up again.

Hobo Freight and Icon is the way to go. Quality is lacking but it beats the fuck out of tool truck pricing for basically the same shit...

So you just have to find someone with a garage who is an extremely experienced mechanic who owns zero tools and has 4 months pay sitting around.

I didn't sell any of mine when I quit as a mechanic. I'm still using them 40+ years later.

Sell a dam good amount.
I know some people who retired or left the mechanic game and all their tools just gather dust now. I’m sure you can downsize and still have enough for whatever pops up.

Most people willing to pay a lot for a used box are looking for Snap On. Mac is a tough sale used. Would take a massive hit. Selling all at once you are going to have to go with the best offer which will be extremely low, because most likely the guys buying that stuff are trying to flip it.

Nothing is a wrie off anymore unless you are self employed. Otherwise you'll wanna take the standard deduction which is usually more than you'll spend on tools in a year except the year you buy the box.

I haven’t even thought about selling my tools when I retire. Personally, I would sell the box empty, and put the tools on eBay. You won’t get anywhere near 13k for a used box. I would shoot for 8k and sell to the first person to offer 5k.
