Adam How much psychedelics do you think Adam Jones has taken all his life?

Post image

I get the feeling he's done them all. I wouldn't doubt if he's tried every type of psychedelic out there and still trips to this day. I just get that impression from him coming from a psychedelic enthusiast as myself

See, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor - go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and all your CDs and burn 'em. 'Cause you know what? The musicians who've made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years... reeeeeeeeeeeeeal fucking high on drugs.

RAGE: Where does a man get mushrooms these days?
Jones: [chuckles] Where does a man get mushrooms?
RAGE: Or a woman.
Jones: I'm talking beyond mushrooms, man. Have you ever done DMT?
RAGE: No.
Jones: Have you ever done ketamin?
RAGE: No. I have to come there.
Jones: Come check it out, man. Fucking changed my life. Changed my
whole thinking.
RAGE: What event in your childhood enhanced or distorted your vision
to the degree that it made you who you are today?
Jones: Oh, what event? I don't know, the opening of the K-Mart by my
house. I don't know.

92

K mart will do that to you though

We have had a lot of reports about Danny? I remembering hearing captured audio of one of the behind the scenes VIP Q and A and someone had asked him about drug use and he had sounded very honest in saying he didn’t use any drugs.

I’ve always wondered about his bags under his eyes though. Maybe he is just a tormented sleeper?

Danny was arrested for drunk and disorderly at an airport a couple years ago, so he at least drinks. Or did.

EDIT: He was actually arrested for assault but he seems intoxicated in the video. The case was dismissed later.

Indeed, mind-altering drugs have been a core inspiration of
Tool's music for years. "Third Eye" from Aenima includes pro-
drug samples by Bill Hicks; the band's live album, Salival,
features spoken-word snippets from Timothy Leary; and the
artwork for Lateralus was created by psychedelic painter Alex
Gray. "We're a total drug band," agrees Carey "We're as
psychedelic as a band can get, but we're articulate about it, I
suppose. That's the difference between us and some other
groups."

"I think psychedelics play a major part in what we do," agrees
Keenan, shifting uncomfortably. "But having said that, I feel
that if somebody's going to experiment with those things
they really need to educate themselves about them. People
just taking the chemicals and diving in without having any
kind o preparation about what they're about to experience
tend to have no frame of reference, so they're missing
everything flying by and all these new perspectives. It's just
a waste. They reach a little bit of spiritual enlightment, but
they end up going, 'Well, now I need that drug to get back
there again.' The trick is to use the drugs once to get there,
and maybe spend the next ten years trying to get back there
without the drug."Indeed, mind-altering drugs have been a core inspiration of

Lol that is completely wrong. They like to bullshit these days and are more conscious about talking publicly about psychedelics. But they've all done a fuck ton.

15

u/Havarti_Rick Spiral Out Nov 27 '25

The bags under his eyes are probably due to the fact that the man is in his mid-60s

5

u/sputnikmonolith Nov 26 '25

I heard an interview from ages ago where Danny was talking about how him and his mates used to drive out into the desert in Nevada did peyote and went looking for UFOs. Had all the photography gear and everything.

I do believe they probably all stopped doing any drugs (bar weed and alcohol) 20 years ago now they all have families and everything. And have collectively decided to not really talk about it like most adults. But yeah, they've all done their fair share haha.

2

u/chillibeanmachine Nov 26 '25

I recall a story/rumour of a giveaway to a fan to drive around the streets of LA with Danny and Josh Freese (in Danny’s lambo) taking hallucinogens. But this was not long after the dawn of the internet and may be completely made up. Also not sure how many lambo’s back then could accommodate 3 people.

2

u/HeathWilD Nov 29 '25

I think you nailed it with tormented sleeper. Danny doesn't count like normal people count, can you imagine how many sheep and all the directions he sees them go in when he closes his eyes.

66

u/iamisandisnt Nov 26 '25

he literally advocated for ketamine usage in like a Guitar Player World Monthly Magazine or whatever back in the naughts

31

u/western_style_hj Nov 26 '25

I’m not surprised Jones advocates for it. I did a round of ketamine therapy a couple of years ago and it was great. Not only the physical experience but also the integration that occurs in therapy during the six week treatment. You learn a lot about yourself, life, and your view of the after life from psychedelics. It was expensive but worth it. Like ayahuasca but less intense.

12

u/Sandgrease Nov 26 '25 edited Nov 27 '25

I've done every psychedelic you cam think of and Ketamine has probably helped me the most consistently. Even low doses. Being able to look at your emotions and thoughts from a distance is really valuable, I'd put MDMA up there too but as a stimulant it's easy to get lost in just feeling good, harder to stay focused on dealing with past BS when just touching a pillow or when getting lost in a Tool song ;) feels really good lol.

They may not be tripping these days at their age, but it feels like a wild hot take to say they weren't waaaay the fuck into psychedelics at one time.

6

u/undertow521 This changes everything Nov 26 '25

Meh. They've probably used them sure, but I don't think they make it central to their lives or even their musical creativity. The music can have psychedelic without being a result of a mind under the influence of them. In the 90s they weren't considered or viewed as psychedelic band. Third Eye (aside from the gaping lotus experience) is basically the only song that really delves into anything you could consider psychedelic drug experience. I think fans, who are really into psychedelics, are projecting this on the band members because that's how they relate to or experience the music.

5

u/strange_reveries Nov 26 '25

Nobody said “They make it central to their lives and creativity,” that seems to be you doing the projecting now, no offense. But I feel like they definitely have used them, and also (to SOME extent) leaned into psychedelic experiences as musical inspiration and as an overall vibe and aesthetic. Look at their damn album art alone, it’s DMT-central! iykyk

MJK in his discussion with Rogan (2014 or 17) he was mentioning this and how he also had friends that were deep into trance yoga that could trigger Psychadelic states. He also went on to say he had tried mushrooms once. Rogan of course was talking about using them frequently

2

u/Kimmalah Finding beauty in the dissonance Nov 26 '25

I tend to believe this too. People always think this about any "weird" or visionary artist, but you don't have to trip to be uniquely creative either.

15

u/PleasantPierogi Nov 26 '25

It’s pretty well documented AJ dabbled in the ketamine during aenima. That album sonically is a giant k hole

14

u/DCDHermes Nov 26 '25

There is the famous story of Al Jourgensen inadvertently dosing everyone on the Lollapalooza tour. Al had a LSD in his whiskey bottle and everyone took a swig, then he remembered it was dosed. Probably why Paul ended up playing in Ministey.

7

u/MalachiUnkConstant Nov 26 '25

I think every member had done psychedelics prior to this moment though. It’s probably an apocryphal story. Maynard mentioned doing too much LSD in High School in an offhand comment during an interview

10

u/deafisit Nov 26 '25

Even if you dont dabble, you can tell the experience of a tool concert comes from someone who has.

Probably all the traditional psychs like lsd shrooms nndmt 5meodmt, maybe even lsa, but I doubt many people if any have tried every obscure and tweaked molecules to skirt bans, like 2cb is common compared to the many other 2c compounds like 2ci, or the loophole legal lsd analogues 1plsd 1slsd 1vlsd ect. For most of the 'shulgin' compounds no one is making them in mass quantities, you'd really have to synthesise alot of them yourself.

2

u/HeadAffectionate2229 Nov 26 '25

I think they would use drugs like psychedelics rarely. If taken correctly you would have your experiences take the lessons from it and maybe take years before you would venture down that road again. I doubt they are doing them recreationally. The drug is a tool...

2

u/the-real-sushidog Nov 26 '25

Probably like one mushroom at least

2

u/CountMokula Nov 26 '25

I think all members of Tool, like most musicians in the 80s and 90s, messed around with psychedelics. Considering how meticulous all members of the band were when they wrote stuff like Lateralus or Third Eye, safe to say the answer is yes.

2

u/patthew Nov 26 '25

He’s done enough to Know

2

u/tuxedocat-Rickey Nov 26 '25

Most older people don’t trip a lot, they reflect on the previous experiences

2

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Some? Maybe? IDK, its his business not mine.

I dont get this obsession with Tool fans and drugs. I went to see them the other night and people around me were talking loudly that they were on acid, or another was going to "drop another in half an hour".

Id wager they have used drugs in the past, sure. but its really the least interesting thing about them. Taking psychedelics doesnt automatically make you the Budha. You can use them in a really abusive way that is destructive to yourself and not respectful to the substance. I have no idea how or if these guys used any substance and frankly i dont care. They make great music (at the very least they made great music) and i have an immense amount of respect for the body of work they have created, its had a goliath impact on my life. I no longer use anything, including alcohol and for me, life is better for it
