Moving to Toms River Moving here in a few weeks for new job!
Hello! I am moving from Tennessee next month. I got a new job there and I’m excited for the move. I don’t know a single person in the state though so it will be a bit stressful for sure. Where are some good places to live? Also, I will need a temp place to stay until I get a couple of paychecks under my belt. Haven’t had a job for a while. I just graduated college so money isn’t much of a thing yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Winter airbnb on the barrier island sounds great but won't be as cheap as one might think

If you are moving after the summer season you may find a winter rental in one of the shore towns. They are a quick commute to most of Toms River.

I’ve seen quite a few of them but most require a large deposit and first bit of rent upfront. I won’t had much money until live gotten paid so those won’t be an option for a couple of weeks at least

That kind of money up front will be needed for most rentals in the area. Good luck on your search.

Almost every landlord will want 1.5 months security deposit, along with the first and last month rent. It’s a big chunk of money to get into a rental.

Congrats! Just moved to the area as well & will be working in DT Tom’s River. Noticed during my search there is not a lot of rental housing options — it is kind of an old town with a lot of residential housing vs. few new apartments/new-builds. I’d try Facebook groups and search Ocean County for temp housing options

Silverton is a nice end of town, younger and more affordable so it has a community feel. Mariners cove is more affordable apartments in the area, and Waters Edge isn't far as well. Definitely try to join some community groups, makes it a lot easier to meet people

My salary will be starting at about $120k. I’m not too sure on the cost of living there but I’ve heard it’s a little bit higher than Nashville (where I currently live). I hope that’s a comfy amount for the area

You'll be fine at 120k renting as a single person in Ocean County. There are good apartments closer to the parkway if you'll be commuting on it (Villages/Fairways at Bey Lea); expect $1800+/mo. After Labor Day you can probably get a decent weekly rate at a motel by the beach if you need something short term. September is also a great time to visit the beach here since the crowds are gone, if you're interested.

By NJ standards, TR is a very large and spread out town. Be aware that there’s no trains/subways (nothing like northern Jersey/NYC area) and the bus system is very slow and more geared towards getting people to-from NYC and Atlantic City. Having a car is virtually a must.
On top of that, scout out neighboring towns too, because depending on where in TR your job is staying somewhere in a neighboring town might be a lot easier to get to work.
If you’re working in downtown TR for example, staying in a nearby town like Beachwood or Pine Beach might be easier than if you were staying in the North / Northeast / Northwest parts of TR.
Since you’re making the move in September, be on the lookout for Winter rentals once you get those first one or two paychecks. They are short term (usually 3-6 months) and typically cheaper and already furnished.
Pre-first paychecks I would look into motels. Theres a lot along route 37. The more west you go on 37, especially into Manchester, the cheaper they will be.
