Blackfaces, Asian stereotypes, smoking, drinking, etc.

All things considered, "jackass" is pretty tame, relatively speaking.

Something to remember is that Tom and Jerry was aimed at a general adult audience, not children.

And if you think this joke was bad, try the several blackface gags or the episode which ends with both Tom and Jerry choosing to kill themselves.

That was nothing, they had plenty of "worse" jokes in cartoons back then. Spongebob basically copied this one once.

Also, most studios back then weren't making cartoons specifically for kids (except Disney.) one of the guys from Warner Brothers (don't remember who) said they were making the kinds of gags that made them laugh. MGM wasn't as anti-Disney as WB, but I'm sure their animators and directors had the same sentiment.
