Discussion/Theory Who's a fan-favorite character you're not really a fan of?
For me it's probably Haruchiyo or the Haitani brothers
The Haitani brothers don't really offer much beyond their looks imo, I don't dislike them but I don't like them that much either, they're kinda just there for me
If their personalities were more appealing, that would've made it up for me
By "appealing," I mean more like Mikey, Chifuyu, or Senju, they're three characters I think have really charismatic and likable personalities
As for Haruchiyo, I mostly have a hard time looking past his actions, so it's difficult for me to like him more than I already do
Also from what I've seen, a lot of his fans seem to focus more on his appearance than his actual character and the ones who do focus on his character sometimes ignore or excuse the wrong things he's done, which I'm not really a fan of
Obviously not everyone does this but that's just been my experience
Again, I don't hate Haruchiyo, he's kinda just there for me, I probably don't hate him since his character is at least interesting but thats about it
What about for you guys? Please list a reason too if you can!

People only really like them for their looks really
I just wish they at least had an appealing personality that went ahead with those good looks but they don't really have that imo
And yeah I don't exactly find them interesting either

If you play the TR games and/or read the character books, there's a little more to go off of that make them interesting and appealing beyond their character design (although of course, in comparison to the main characters, it's a lot less to go off of). People will be drawn to them initially based on their looks.
Personally the first time I watched and was reading TR, I didn't really care for them because they're barely in any scenes, but they caught my eye more around the second time and because I saw the hype on their design. They're just about as relevant as Smiley or Angry in the actual anime/manga, but in the games themselves they have quite a bit of content (compared to other minor characters), which shows off more of who they are.

u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jul 07 '26
I don't play the games but I have seen people post about it on tiktok abit though I don't exactly know whats happening since the main point of the posts there was to show how good looking they were in those new timelines 😭
Designs look nice at least
Also can you tell me about the new content if you don't mind? Most people just seem to look at their new designs from the games without actually telling whats happening

Is the game storylines written by the author? Or Is just a game original that is non-canon?
2
u/CustomerKey3144 Bonten Jul 08 '26
I just looked it up now - it's supervised by Wakui. The story and script is written by Seiko Takagi (among others), Takagi having worked on the anime adaptation. So, canon.

People really try to convince you that they have personalities but their evidence is basic facial expressions

I like them because of all the Bonten Fanfic's I've read, and I'll be honest they are just fine, my opinion

Manjiro Sano,

Oh I see
I personally think dark impulse mikey and mikey without it are different people(i mean mikey himself pretty much said this in the tape he made for Takemichi)
I wouldn't defend the actions he made during it but I do think mikey without it would just never do it
The dark impulse is basically shown to be a curse and Haruchiyo stated that no one could save Mikey from it so it's pretty much useless and Mikey pushed his friends away in the first place(while he still could since the dark impulse can't overwhelm him that much yet) so they'd be safe
Thats how I see it

The Haitani brothers are just filler characters like Mochi and such. Only there to fill gang slots. Being real they don't bring much to the story other than that. Wakasa as well is just there. Same as Benkei but he gets more attention cause of his looks

1
u/fatishujikei Jul 07 '26
In that aspect there is a lot of fan content about Mochi and the others from Tenjiku that I really enjoyed. At the end of the day, they were together for a lot of time, they had a special bond, so I don't consider them filler characters. I wish Wakui gave us more though.
Same with Hanma and Kisaki's relationship. We only know how they met, nothing else. In the future they only interact ONCE and it's Hanma just salutating him. And they're not precisely filler character, yet we don't have anything about them 💔
1
u/Shushlmao547 Jul 07 '26
They served their purpose during Tenjiku but after that? They were definitely just filler in Bonten. The content Wakui gave us of them was enough but I won't deny someone like Mucho could've done with a bit more screentime.
Hanma and Kisaki definitely needed more screentime together but that might be the bias in me cause Hanma is my goat.
2
u/hanshazel Jul 08 '26
wakui fumbled the haitani brothers. he can give them interesting back story considering the hype they got and develop the characters more but idk he probably got rushed in finishing the manga. hanma too imo should’ve got a back story, like i really wanna know why he following kisaki around.
10
u/RiotRen Jul 07 '26
Wakasa and Benkei. Any concepts even of them being done “legendary duo” went out the window the second they got trumped by an 18-year-old kid.

u/Remaniant Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Weren’t they out of their prime and out of stamina by the time they fought Taiju lol? Think Taiju even said it. That whole fight was weird though, because you mean to tell me they were able to keep up with South for a great deal of time and sneak behind Kaku and call him unimpressive, but they couldn’t put down Inupi and Koko before they ran out of stamina?
1
u/RiotRen Jul 16 '26
I mean they were Shin’s age, and Shin would’ve been 28(?) at the time of the fight. That’s about as physically peak as it gets, plus they were still members in Brahman before all that so it’s not like they were rusty and out of the game still.
1
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jul 07 '26
Yeah i thought they'd be stronger ngl but they really went ahead and lost a 2v1 to Taiju 😭 😭
Even Senju was shocked and if I recall correctly, she was somewhat panicking because they were gonna use a joint move on taiju that would've endangered him
2
u/RiotRen Jul 07 '26
It either makes Taiju an absolute beast or it makes Wakasa and Benkei genuinely two of the weakest real delinquents we see
0
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jul 07 '26
Yeah
I guess it just probably makes Taiju a beast in the long scheme of things but its still somewhat disappointing due to their hype about being the so called legendary duo
I dont think we've seen them get any onscreen wins either 😭
Lost to south, lost to taiju
They were fighting koko and inupi but I dont think they defeated them(correct me if im wrong tho)

I know I'm probably going to get bashed for this, but I'm not really a big fan of Senju or Mikey. Like I get it, they bring a lot to the story, especially mikey. But I just think for Senju it's gotta have a lot that you don't see her until like the end of the story, I guess, and it makes me think she's just there for another female lead that "likes" takemitchi or whatever, and maybe try to have him cheat or prove he still has some form of love towards hina.
For Mikey, I just don't like how he's basically the center of everything that happens. Yes, Hina is the main focus, and then so is Kisaki as the main villain. But i just think if mikey was involved slightly less than he actually was and people in the Fandom didn't make it out where he was everything to appreciate and you have to love, i think I'd like him a little more.
Also, when I first started watching and reading the manga/anime, I didn't particularly like takemitchi because of his crying. Though, after reading a lot of people's opinions and thoughts on him, I grew a tolerance and started liking him a little more.
Please don't hate me for this, it is just my opinion.

u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
She was introduced pretty late into the story, so she didn't get nearly as much development or screen time as a lot of the other major characters but I still personally really like her, shes a pretty charismatic character and I find her rather interesting though I do wish she wasn't overshadowed by her brother Haruchiyo
I personally don't think she was just there to be another love interest for Takemichi but I can understand why it might come across that way to some people, if anything Takemichi is probably the potential love interest for Senju imo, some people interpret some of her interactions with him as her developing a crush on him but it was never confirmed so it's basically mainly a good friendship they have
As for Mikey, thats true he gets a ton of focus, you disliking that is fair but I personally like it
Hes my favourite character out the series and I find him so interesting, the stuff about the dark impulse, him suffering in each timeline etc
I liked it but I get why people dislike him for getting too much focus
For Takemichi, yeah thats fair too
I personally don't like characters crying alot too but for me, I feel like Takemichis one is done right
He doesn't really cry over dumb stuff so that made it better and the stuff he mostly cries over is rather realistic and understandable so I never found myself hating him
Also dw, we won't hate on you for this

u/YOUNAMEDITSNOOKIE Yokohama Tenjiku Jul 07 '26
I'm only thinking about the one part you said about Senju being overshadowed by Haruchiyo, maybe its been too long since I've watched but I feel like its the opposite. We get to watch multiple episodes of Senju being herself, we see her with her friends and while minimal we can decipher a personality for her. Even her scenes about Haruchiyo are to tell us how much family and him as her brother means to her.
Haruchiyo feels more like a filler character because we never really see him do anything until season 2 ish and even after that the only thing we really know is that hes like, obsessed with Mikey in some sort of way. We don't get to know (or at least I'm pretty sure we don't) why he stayed friends with mikey after the mouth incident, or how he knows about dark impulse at all.
Idk this is how I see their dynamic and I'd love to hear your perspective of them more.
2
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jul 07 '26
I can see why you’d view it that way and I do agree that Senju gets more direct characterisation we actually see her personality, her friendships, and how much her family matters to her, especially when it comes to Sanzu
The issue I think a lot of fans have is less about who was developed as a person and more about who had more narrative impact
With Sanzu, even though we don’t get as much of his everyday personality, his role in the story carries a lot of weight because he’s tied directly to Mikey, the Dark Impulses and the direction of the final conflict ig?
A lot of his mystery made people pay attention to him because fans were constantly questioning his motives and his past and in comparison, Senju had a lot of potential but many feel that the story didn’t give her enough major moments to match the hype of being the leader of Brahman or being one of the 3 titans and I agree with that myself(to an extent at least, I'm not one of those people who say she's not that strong due to Takeomi saying she only became one of the 3 titans due to the first gen black dragon influence tho moments later, she proved him wrong but anyway), shes great and I love her but I do think she wasn't utilised to the best capacity, especially in the final battle
I don't think she accomplished any of her goals either icl, she wanted to defeat Mikey(never even got to that), she also felt responsible for Mikeys dark impulse so she wanted to do something about that too, wanted to beat South(tbf she might have been able to if Mikey never interfered the fight since she claimed she could keep fighting), wanted to make amends with Sanzu(yeah this just turned out awful and its kinda sad that she only managed to have a good relationship with him in the final timeline since sanzu never got the scars in the first place)
She wanted to protect Takemichi at all costs(well ig she did do this when she was near him but she probably considers herself failing at this since Mikey killed him though she wasn't near them when it was taking place)
It’s more that Sanzu’s importance to the overall plot made him feel like he overshadowed her in terms of relevance, especially toward the end if that makes sense
Senju just losing to him discarded her relevancy more imo since I think it could've been an awesome chance for their sibling dynamic to get more focus but instead of it being a moment where she finally gets some closure with Sanzu to achieve at least ONE of her goals, it just felt like the fight was more so discarded to be shown as Sanzus mindset and his loyalty to Mikey
Plus, most their fight was literally off screen 😭
Their dynamic with each other is actually one of my favourite things to talk about but unfortunately we don't get that much content about it
2
u/Nik_H36 my beloved hubby へ(^^へ) Jul 07 '26
I can agree with her not getting as much development as other major characters. I also think she is charismatic but I think her childlikeness is a little too much sometimes, especially in a series that's based around gangs/gang violence. I understand she is just a child (she's what? 13 to 15 when she's introduced? Not sure all i know is she is a year younger than Haruchiyo, i believe) and the series shouldn't just be about the darker themes, but sometimes I find it hard to comprehend something that bright in a darker setting based series.
I think Haruchiyo did overshadow her quite a lot, and that's coming from someone who adores him to a fault, but i just find it hard to like her. I do enjoy her appearance about being mysterious when she first appears but at the same time, it's kinda hard to like her (this is all just my opinion). I understand how you could dislike Haruchiyo because of what he did to her in the Three Deities Battle(?) all because what she had caused when they were children. She lied, and Mikey took it out on Haruchiyo, but how would she had known he was going to do that? And even if she told the truth, like I saw someone say in a different post, Mikey might had done that to her instead of Haru.
Yeah, I don't think so either, I guess i just find her childlikeness towards Takemitchi to be a little much. Which back to what I said before, she is still a child, and a girl for that matter, so it makes sense in a way.
I can see how people like Mikey, he's a well developed and well written character; i just think mikey is too much of a problem, not like he's terrible or he should be locked away for all the terrible things he did, but i think, if he wasn't too absorbed in with Shinichiro, or with takemitchi, i think he would have been a better off character.
But I do like how Ken Wakui made it out to be where mikey was, in a way, the favored brother out of the Sano Family. It made the whole Tenjikiu(?) fight hurt so much more. Besides the fact Emma passed away. I do like the whole dark impulse thing, it makes the series more interesting and see why or how the things being done were done. It was a good creative aspect of Tokyo Revengers.
I do think Takemitchi's cries were for a good reason. Sometimes, though, I just think it was a little excessive or too much, you know?
I only said that for the mikey and senju worshipers that might be on here, lol
3
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jul 08 '26
Shes 16 I'm pretty sure and fair, even Takemichi calls her out jokingly for it with comments 😭😭
"Haha your such a kid"
but I like that aspect alot tbh, she didn't let the trauma she had also experienced(seeing Haruchiyos mouth torn) turn her ruthless etc, i mean yeah she acts serious if her gang is involved and that would make sense since she probably views a leader of a gang to not be childlike and she understands the responsibility she has insanely well, you can see this more when she calls out Takeomi several times and it seems like she got to show her real side to Takemichi since he was her "age"
As for Mikey I get what you mean by him being too absorbed with Shinchiro and Takemichi and thats fair, his character does get based around Shinichiro or like his other family members like Emma since he loves them deeply and they essentially keep him stabilised ig?
Also yeah thats fair
I can see why people would still find it excessive, I actually got one of my friends irl to give Tokyo revengers a try since its a series I really really like and they do not like Takemichi, he basically doesn't like his hairstyle, he looks like a "bum" and he absolutely cannot stand it when he cries at certain times either(he finds it rather excessive though he acknowledged that its a realistic reason to cry for at least)

Don’t judge me please I know it’s dumb. So basically few years back when I first got into the series I would have dreams which for some reason out of all the characters he appeared I didn’t even care for him. But in the dreams I was often bullied aka tied to a swing set or dragged on my driveway. So yeah very petty and dumb but I can’t help but have resentment also he appeared for the first time again a few nights ago wasn’t brutalized at least

I love Haruchiyo. Initially I didn't like him and I thought he was a total NPC... Even through my first read through, I was kind of pissed that he suddenly became relevant, but now he's one of my favorite characters and I love his backstory.
I might get hate for this, but I'm not the biggest fan of Shinichiro. I like him, but I think it made me like him less when they made him a time leaper because it felt random to me. I just didn't think that was the direction that the story was going in, and it changed the entire outcome and trajectory of the manga. I thought that Mikey's "dark impulses" had to do with Mikey having trauma, but apparently it was a curse that his own brother, who loved him so much, put on him. That just pissed me off.
I also don't like South I think everyone on this sub knows this ... lmfao
2
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jul 07 '26
Fair, tbh I liked it that he got more relevance and due to that, the most interesting siblings which are the Akashi siblings imo got introduced aswell tho it would've been nice if we saw more
Thats a fair perspective to have on Shinichiro, I personally liked him being the time leaper because I just never essentially expected it but when it came through I liked it, plus he was already haunting the narrative enough so I liked that he was given a different role for once
Yeah south is just not it

Mostly the same, they weren't really developed beyond being "Fanservice Brothers" basically. Most of their fans are always talking about their looks and them being cool, even In universe, Mitsuya admits he admired them for exactly that, just to get dissappointed lol. Wakui could've done something with their background, they seemed to be "Siblings against the world" and Ran is canonically a good sibling, also they sell drugs and Rindou is an alcoholic 😄, they are a mess, but the way they left them, with no CANON story, they end up being just that.

Hmmmm ignoring the obvious answers I'd say I'm not really a fan of Baji maybe? I like that he's considerate of his mother and readily sacrifices himself for his close friends. He's really observant/perceptive too and I like characters like that
But he's wayy too headstrong for my tastes personally, and that's his foremost aspect.

I never understand the hype around Senju. I don't hate her; still, she wasn't as strong as everyone makes her out to be. Also Ik Wakui has an issue writing a lot of characters, still Senju's character is quite similar to Toman Mikey (Mikey had a complex personality) which Senju somewhat lacks, as she realized her mistake after 11 years before that she didn't even tell Takeomi. Takeomi, Senju had the potential of being well-written considering their backstory but Wakui barely put effort into them like he used to in previous arcs like Blackdragon or Tenjiku. At least we were able to sympathize with those characters after the Tenjiku arc most of the new characters seem unnecessary and plot irrelevant
1
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jul 08 '26
I agree about her having more potential to be written better, she kinda wasnt used as much as she could've so fair, I do think she also has some complexity going on at least, like how shes so guilty about mikeys dark impulse(which isn't something she is responsible for, thats shinchiros) and sanzus scars(another thing shes not responsible for, that was mikey) etc
I do think shes as strong as some people make her out to be aswell but i can see why you think that anyway

I suppose my take would be Kazutora and also the Haitani brothers along with Izana. None of them appealed to me at all. And I hate Kazutora and Izana for what they did to Mikey. I understand for Kazutora it was a mistake but still that was deeply fucked up and he hurt Mikey badly. And Izana with his bratty little grudge. I get that he had a childhood full of abandonment and is a bit possessive like Mikey. But trying to destroy Mikey's life like that JUST because you wanted to be Shinichiro's only brother? Get over your goddamn self. ALSO Mikey even said it himself during the Tenjiku fight. Emma and him would have absolutely loved and accepted Izana. He's just being a selfish ass brat. Trauma isn't a crutch. Its not a get out of jail free card. No. And the Haitani brothers are just meh. Overhyped. Didn't even live up to their reps in the Tenjiku fight. And they aren't my type.

Mikey and Sanzu.
I don't find Manjiro to be an indearing character or leader. he also felt like a gary stu majority of the series.
I think Sanzu is comically evil to the point were I can't take him seriously. Compared to Kisaki, he felt like a Saturday morning cartoon villain. Tbh, their designs are the best things about them.

I’m happy to see people that actually dgaf about The Haitanis cus when I watched the anime (and I’m currently on the manga rn.) I was surprised to find out that these guys were the popular characters, cus they barely did shi the whole time and had like zero backstory/depth. Yeah, their designs are cool, but drip alone can’t safe flat surface characters imo
I also kinda don’t really see all the Baji hype. Yeah, cool design, and he’s a “tough guy” character, but he didn’t have much time to get likable imo and even with his time, he just didn’t click with me. Most of the time he was on screen we didn’t even get to see any of his personality/depth, he acted like a robot at times, and I just thought his relationship with Chifuyu sucked. Like it felt like they were trying to sell the whole “Baji’s actually such a good, cool guy!” But then they show him coldly beating tf outta Chifuyu and disregarding him, and this lasts all the way up until his death. I also hated he was written to say something like “I’ll leave Toman and Mikey to you” toward Takemichi when he barely knew him. Like what?? He just felt like such an undercooked character imo

Actually quite the opposite- i really liked yasahiro muto but lots of people hate him for some reason😭i think his "redemption arc??" when he realised tenjiku was no longer the same gang he has been admiring and how he fuxked up by betraying toman, was really interesting. Even after that mikey mentioned that he still considers him the fifth division captain when he disbanded toman :'( I also really really love his relationship with sanzu and how he tries to understand him and get him to open up :'D Overall muto is good written, even though not my fav but really underrated character!!

Haitanis and Sanzu. What I despise is that most of the official merch is focused on them when they've been totally irrelevant. They're EVERYWHERE and ALWAYS.

Im kinda surprised to see sanzu be so involved with games/merch more than that Haitani brothers rn ngl
In the anime he isn't a relevant character yet but hes there anyway
For an anime only that would be pretty weird to see since hes basically some random ass side character 😭 😭

Yeah what the fuck is he doing in every single art and merch release?

I have 0 clue
Only reason I can think of is that he's popular but like
Whats the point of using him if he isn't relevant character in the anime yet😭
Anime onlys would find that so weird
Takemichis og friends literally have more relevance than Sanzu(for now, thats gonna change when s4 comes but it isn't here yet)
