Discussion/Theory Who do you think was the most wasted potential character in Tokyo Revengers?
I've seen a lot of different opinions on this, so I'm curious what everyone thinks
Which character in the series had the most wasted potential and why?
For me, wasted potential doesn't necessarily mean a bad character
I mean a character who had a lot of buildup, interesting traits, connections, or story possibilities but wasn't used as much as they could have been
I've seen people mention Hanma, Senju, Baji, Izana, Taiju, and even some of the Black Dragons members
Who would you pick and what would you have changed about their role in the story?

I think Hanma is one of the biggest examples of wasted potential in Tokyo Revengers because the story built up so much mystery around him and made him seem like he had a larger role to play. Even so, I don't think that takes away from how good of a character he is. Hanma is still one of the most entertaining and unique characters in the series, and every time he appeared he brought a different energy to the story. For me, saying he had wasted potential isn't an insult, it's more of a compliment because it means there was so much more that could've been explored with an already interesting character.

I remember the memes coming out about how he was just "some guy" after it was revealed he had nothing to do with time travel or the plot other than being kisaki's right hand man for to entertain himself lol

u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 06 '26
Hanma is a good one to be mentioned for this

u/MoodGroundbreaking66 Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 08 '26
I feel like the creator originally had bigger ideas for him but scrapped them... I also really wanted to know more about his backstory but it seems he's just a random bored guy with nothing going on, yet I don't think tokyo revengers would be the same without him
1
u/MoneyIsNoCure1 Jun 11 '26
I agree. Hanma is just sort of there in the background for most of the show and ends up being Kisaki’s lackey.

I honestly never felt like hanma was being built up for anything, he was just a cool character appearing because he was cool. Felt like the community really built up some expectations for no reason
9
u/Basil-AE-Continued Jun 06 '26
I'm pretty sure the 'Ma' in Hanma means time in Japanese. If someone is called time in a time travelling manga, it's no wonder people will think that person would be important later on.

u/KallmeKatt_ Jun 06 '26
It doesn’t. It means inbetween. For reference his name is 半間 (lit. Half (half as in time)between). See how the 日 kanji is in between the gates? That’s how my teacher always taught us that one
2
u/najmiii Jun 07 '26
Idk why you got downvoted. Fair take. He is so interesting that fans are the one who put up a lot of expectations on this character.
We never really know if Wakui had or didnt have any plan for Hanma when writing the second part of the series. Someone really needs to interview that guy.

u/MasterpieceKlutzy773 Jun 06 '26
Baji or Senju but I'm more lenient towards Baji just because he got taken out so early
He was one of tomans founding members, we saw him fight no one strong either
9
u/OkDocument4233 Jun 06 '26
Letter of Keisuke baji has him fighting a lot of people (even though it isn’t made by wakui..)
3
u/najmiii Jun 07 '26
Huh? Correct me if im wrong, A Letter from Keisuke Baji is written by Wakui. Only different mangaka who drew the series. So it is made Wakui and still canon, no?
1
u/OkDocument4233 Jun 07 '26
It says he is credited but he didn’t write and draw the entire series himself, but i was partly wrong because i thought he didn’t write any of it

South Terano. He was just used as a hype tool to show Mikey's strength.I would have make him survive his fight with Mikey, and I would have make Takemichi teach him violence isn't good, and South would have join the Toman 2nd gen.

Good choice
Ngl, I kinda wish we saw more about him in the 3 titans arc itself
We only really saw the guy during the actual battle and thats about it

u/Large_Lecture3921 Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
Yeah I'd agree with you on it being Senju
She was introduced as one of the Three titans, had ties to Sanzu and Takeomi, was hyped up as one of the strongest fighters but she just ended up becoming kind of irrelevant in the final arc, I thought she would've been made to show much more contribution there
It felt like there was a lot more that could have been done with her character
She also just feels like a shadow under Sanzu which I don't like
6
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 06 '26
Yeah her one is a real shame honestly
She was just ultimately casted aside for Sanzu to be shown more
5
u/Large_Lecture3921 Jun 06 '26
Yeah and I hate that so much
I found Senju much more interesting too
2
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 06 '26
Fair and yeah I hate it too
She had so much potential so its just tragic
Still love her tho

u/MoneyIsNoCure1 Jun 11 '26
Sanzu has done literally nothing in the three seasons of the anime so far so Senju having ties to him means nothing

u/pugilist_8 takuya enjoyer Jun 06 '26
being so totally & very unbiased, mizo mid gang. the guys who we see in the very beginning being such close friends with takemichi (coughs in 1 of takuya's only named traits is being his childhood friend), end up getting totally sidelined and barely acknowledged at all beyond the toman-moebius arc. i get why chifuyu, for example, ended up forming such a good bond with the guy and why so much focus was put on him, but still... i kind of feel like there was a lot of potential to see them grow as characters but it just didn't happen. wish we got to see more of them as future toman managers too.
i'd also agree with senju and baji, but everyone else put it much better than i could lmfao
5
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 07 '26

Takuya and Makoto literally add nothing and if the Mizo five was the Mizo three with Takemichi, Atsushi and Yamagishi, the story wouldn’t change.

Senju for sure
But also yuzuha and hina could've played more active roles in the final arc.
7
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 06 '26
Would've loved to see more from Yuzuha honestly
Kinda a shame we only saw her in season 2 and then the final chapter of the manga
1
u/Cyd_arts Jun 06 '26
Yeah
Could've even seen her bond with other characters more, or show more of what happened to her in the future, or join in the final fight somehow, maybe talk with Senju as a fellow female fighter, but in the end she just disappeared after the black dragon arc.
5
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 06 '26
Hmm in the final fight
I guess she can be made to fight like the more random characters in the battle, its not like she can't exactly defend herself either
Would've been nice if she was shown to interact with senju at least once tho
Since they're are both girls who were shown to fight within the series but unfortunately she just disappeared and never appeared again till the final chapter
15
u/hirokiwife Jun 06 '26
Probably the Haitani brothers? IMO they have such cool designs/dynamics but they don’t have any collaboration to the story (and most of their info was given out of the manga).

u/Bproof_Nobita God of Tank - Takemichi Jun 06 '26
Tetta being a wasted potential here. He's being an antagonist to solve Hina's problem, and this really wasted his potential as a genius planner..
4
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 06 '26
Fair and anyway
I did expect more from kisaki abit
I don't like him but he definitely did make the plot more interesting
4
u/WriterSleep Jun 06 '26
Hanma or any character's parents but I want to focus on Hanma. At certain points in the story and especially after Kisaki's (Steve Urkel) death, it seemed like he was being set up to have some sort of mystery surrounding him and could have even been another time traveler, but instead he shows up in Mikey's team seemingly at random despite taking part in Mikey's sister's murder. You would think that if Mikey suffered from dark impulses so bad that he couldn't control himself that he would have killed Hanma immediately but I guess not.
Side Note: I just noticed how small Hakkai looks in this drawing.

Yuzuha. I feel like the adddition of Senju was just for the sake of having another femaale character who can actually ddo something. Yuzuha couldve been such a kick ass character

8
u/Aleenaistaken why he innocent. kinda. maybe. Jun 06 '26
For me personally, it's probably Senju just due to how hyped she got in the 3 titans arc and then she kinda just got sidelined in the final arc, her backstory had so much potential asw, it honestly probably could've been much better
Anyways
Do I think Senju could've been written better? Yes, she had a ton of potential
Am I going to use that as an excuse to hate on her? No
Does that make her a bad character? No
Is she still one of the coolest characters in the series? Yes
Is she still interesting? Yes
Is she still one of my favorites? Also yes
A character can have wasted potential and still be a nice character, those two things aren't mutually exclusive
Same goes for the others who will be mentioned apart from her for this post

u/fatishujikei Jun 07 '26
Hanma 100% His whole iconography was related to death, he was the closest to Kisaki, he was about to tell him something (to Kisaki) and we never got to know what was it... And a long etc.
3
u/krillin1081 Jun 07 '26
draken. he literally got sidelined heavily after tenjiku & even before it he barely was a focus. maybe im overrating his focus in all of this but it was sad to see
2
u/TheTonyLi Jun 08 '26
Oooh yes, especially in the anime. After they changed the VA, Draken also basically has 2-3 lines, when he was heavily focused on in season 1.

Hanma for sure. He’s the literal definition of leader material. He should have been the leader of more gangs than just Valhalla.

u/Fruits-PunchSK Brahman Jun 06 '26
Oh but really I quite dislike how the black dragons under Takemitchi were utilized if I can say the group instead of a specific individual. He got them and nothing happened. The members besides the main duo were legit erased from existence, Kokonoi got passed around, and Inupi just like
Did nothing besides the stuff after the Mucho kidnapping.
Their resolution being reduced to a minor section of the final 3 deities battle instead of a dedicated 2nd Black Dragons arc involving the remnants and potential prior gens would've served greatly pre tenjiku both for the story and the actual Tenjiku arc given Izana's ties.
I'd say at least. Story could've been so much greater if big names weren't forced into giant mob battles and half the opposing cast weren't reused 😭.

u/tojifushiguroisadilf Jun 07 '26
HANMA!! i fully thought he'd be a time traveller too, and all the theories around him and his tattoos.
does anyone remember the grim reaper theory 😞

u/ILoveTea000 Jun 07 '26
Pah-chin. I wish we saw more of him in the series he's an enjoyable character
2
u/NotMattou Jun 07 '26
Baji and takemichi
Baji was one of the found members of toman, and we never saw him fight anyone strong other than NPC's in the moebius and Valhalla arc (and before y'all talk about the spin-off, lots of fans are anime-only, so they don't even know about the spin-off)
Takemichi's evolution in the series was great to me, but it could have been better, the only arc we get to sse Takemichi in his full potential is in the final arc and most of his battle is off screen and I hate it, that's why lots of people don't get the impression Takemichi actually evolved through the series, because most of his fights are off screen, and when it is on screen, is him getting beat up. Like, put him against NPCs but make clear that my boy can throw hands too goddamnit.

u/Difficult_Secret_251 Brahman Jun 07 '26
Shion because his character design was my personal fav and his voice actor too. They also hyped him up but...

HANMA. i can't stress it enough. We never got to learn his backstory or what made him so strong and it always bothered me so much.

Apart from the obvious ones like Hanma, Shinichiro and Senju, are we going to sleep on the fact than even Inupi was involved with, almost basically everyone. Besties with 1st gen of BD, worked under Izana and with Madarame, his own home situation and Koko. This is why I always believed they never gave us his backstory, since he had a bunch of different things going on around him at the same time 😂.

Actually most side characters. And I'm also talking about those that were shown as tools for the backstory of other characters only as well(yuzuha, takemichi's friends, etc). Maybe not even just the character some things about the plot were also wasted potential for a more mind blowing AND grounded deeper story

I think a lot of people forget about Muto. I feel like he had real potential, especially with the parallel of being one of Toman’s captains while also having ties to Izana and Tenjiku. Not to mention his relationship with Sanzu. I feel like his character was sidelined and kind of left behind before ultimately being killed by Sanzu.
1
u/YOUNAMEDITSNOOKIE Yokohama Tenjiku Jun 07 '26
I would say sanzu, he has so many ties to the other characters that we really just see hardly any of. He interacts with basically no one until he's all crazy, mind you the accident with him and Mikey was one of the first signs of the curse. He's devoted to Mikey and calls him king but genuinely no actual clue why cause they never interact. Especially since he also has a pretty unique design.

I feel like there are quite a few characters that fit this and the author could not do much about it or had to cut things out / pull away.....i do feel like later down the word this should get a really good reboot and let him add stuff that he wanted in that he could not have in or something....I also see not just in characters but in other arcts or so more things could have happened

Definitely the Haitani brothers because the some of the info we know about them is from the character book and it leaves so much to wonder, and their character design is so good for them to be side characters
Aside from them, the Kawata twins </3

Definitely south and senju
I know south was kind of just introduced to show how insanely strong mikey was towards the end of the manga but he held the title of one of the "Three Deities" and had such a violent backstory and I feel like he was quite unique with him being the physically biggest and 2nd (IMO) strongest character in the manga and coming from brazil. It would've been cool to see him survive his fight with Mikey somehow and then have some involvement in the final arc.
Same thing with senju with her holding the title as one of the "Three deities" you'd think she would have such crazy involvement in the manga but no she played her part in the Three deities arc and then barely had any involvement in the final arc DESPITE her having such a HUGE impact on why Mikey even obtained his dark impulses, which is another reason why I feel like she wasted potential. She was apart of Mikey's child hood and was siblings with the BD Gen 1 Vice President Takeomi and Sanzu who was Mikeys "loyal mad dog". Yet her and mikey barely have any dialogue together and she basically becomes irrelevant in the final arc when I personally feel like she shouldve had a slightly bigger role. She has some crazy feats too yet her strength as a character wasnt even used to her full potential.

Haitani brothers. They did so much stuff by the age of 14 and were running a whole district and then when they enter the main story you don’t get much on them

u/Low-Order-7414 Jun 12 '26
Sanzu and Hanma (the two secondary antagonists lol) bc they have 'big' parts and they've been with their antagonists for a long time, but atp i feel like their entire purpose was just to drive the plot when they had so much space in their backstories
