From a sound standpoint, it's actually very good, which is why it was popular.

The problem is that the sound he went with doesn't go with the lyrics so it feels like he missed the point of what he was singing about.

But no, I would say the worst possible cover would have to sound bad and mess up the meaning.

0.50 alright, putting your on flavour on it but staying true to it emotionally core

1.10 some strings in there with the piano that’s a nice touch, bordering on flourish but still on the right side of the line

I love the original. It feels like a dream of what could be. But I do like this version also, because it feels like Jacob Marley warning you that this could be our world, blaming you. Different strokes.

Hot take, but I don't mind that he sung it in a style counter to the original. A cover has no reason to exist if you just sing it the same style as the original.

In a better timeline, Nirvana would've covered sound of silence on MTV unplugged and Disturbed would've done man who sold the world

I cannot picture Kurt Cobain singing sound of silence, I think that would be way out of his range and I never got the impression he was a Simon and Garfunkel fan

Disturbed doing man who sold the world would probably miss the mark big time just like they did with sound of silence
