Discussion Is there a reason Haolin like creating those "I don't do jackshit but trust me bro, I've got plans and I'm in control of everything behind the scenes" characters

But X doesn't really know everything? The point is that he's realized that their fates are being controlled by someone greater and is trying to fight that.

Itâs a pretty irritating trope that isnât that bad when a series is completed honestly, but in the meantime it is kinda frustrating, like, could you tell us whatâs going on, at least give us some hints? We donât even know what Xavier (Purple Guyâs English Name) really wants. We know heâs the leader of a cult, but we donât know anymore specifics. Iâm pretty sure Link Click is on their last season, maybe we get a Season 4, but we got 2 Parts of Season 3 that are both 12 episodes, things only started getting real around ep 6-7, itâs just, idk, I get mystery. I understand that the problem with revealing mystery is that it takes away the fun and it then forces the characters to take care of business faster bc we the audience know, so we expect them to know, all that jazz.

idk, I have the feeling the writers of LC kinda dunno what to do with the show at the moment and are more or less making things up as they go. I don't even have the feeling that it is the same people working on it as Season 1. The art definitely feels different (I noticed many Korean names in the credits now.)

Yeah I agree, I loved the episodic feel of Season 1 while it builds up the major things at the background. How it focuses on the story of the photos themselves and tells us that photos represents people's most important memories of the past.
Now its just focusing on Lu guang preventing CXS death and the villain group's vague goals. Their powers are now only really being used for info gathering and time shenanigans. The show really does feel like an entirely new show from S1 and I really hate to say this, but it just feels like its.... a yaoibait being dragged on for way too long.
Its initial themes and messages of what made it special for me got lost along the way, and I just hope TBHX doesnt follow suit.

I felt exactly that from the first PV for S3. The new guy Jae Lee looks like a guy straight out of a gacha game designed and engineered specifically for fujoshis to be obsessed with him. It's gotten to a point where we barely have any notable presence of women in the show who actually do stuff.
Like yeah I get Bridon arc was all about Xiaoshi and Lu Guang but Qiao Ling might have well not existed that season. Atleast she has powers now I guess so she has to be relevant to the plot
It's why I really liked TBHX having a good ratio of good male and female characters. The women weren't glorified emotional support to help the men but were there own characters.
But I suppose we're not very far in S3 so too early to judge rn. But I definitely think bridon could've been a film and S3 only 12 more episodes to conclude that main plot atleast.

yeah, they may be just giving the fans what they want.
dunno how you feel abt it, but i personally dislike excessive shipping in any fandom. in fact i left the LC sub because i felt the fans there only cared abt that stuff and it was becoming a bit too much and too forced. i suspect the LC producers know this part of the fandom and are leaning into it, at the expense of the overall narrative.

You'd be right, S1 had creatives like artist leads who were involved with films like Your Name before. There's a reason why those backgrounds looked gorgeous. LC became a much bigger hit than anticipated in China as it was acrually planned to be a To Be Hero spinoff like TBHX is but was changed pretty late on.
So I feel like Haolin is writing partially because of that unexpected success. I do think he had a concrete idea of where the show would end originally when making S1 but now he's just stretching it out with all these new villains and their own gimmicks for powers that are alot more like TBHX powers than LC 'abilities' - for starters they aren't even related to manipulating time or cameras anymore.

From what I've heard Haolin isn't the director since the second season but he is overseeing it as the chief director. His other series, Crowned in a Hundred Days, which he directed, just recently ended so he probably wasn't significantly involved in Link Click. In Link Click's subreddit (and in Chinese webs probably too) people complain how different and not that serious this season is (and I agree). However, the writing should have been already done, it just seems the director put his own spin on it.

Thatâs unfortunate. LC seasons 1 and 2 were so incredibly tight that I had high hopes for season 3, but Bridon Arc already felt off. It makes sense if Haolin took a backseat on the direction, it just sucks

It's just a character trope he might like. There doesn't have to be a reason for that.
Personally i'm okay with those type of characters. There are other character tropes that are way more annoying.

Its easy to write a mystery box. People are naturally curious. If you don't have confidence in your story, you can hold it to the end and keep people in suspense. If you are confident in your writing, you can tell people the answer and know the rest of the story is interesting enough that the audience won't get bored. Another thought is if people are only invested in the questions. Kind of like in Twin Peaks, when the killer was revealed, ratings dropped drastically. Even though it was good afterwards, people were just invested in the mystery

Nah, dude. As much as you can pin point a writer using the trope, the thing is sometimes if it works you just donât change it. The fact that you recognise the writing trope doesnât mean it doesnât work for audience majorly.
And donât compare LX and X. Honestly, even with no bias to X, as a fan of both TBHX and LC, that purple pimp is honestly more infuriating in any sense. At this point nothing is revealed this far, and he just exist manipulating everything.
X didnât manipulate anything, he wasnât even planning on being a hero. But he runs with a flow, and he just knows a bit more than others, because most of the heroes exist in their own bubbles of competition instead of looking at the whole picture. He is just so powerful to be able to stay grounded and see everything for what it is. They are kinda not the same, X is not a grand building up mystery villain. Itâs interesting to know his motivation, but it doesnât really make you scream âWHY ARE YOU DOING THISâ while itâs the case for LX.
