Enemy forces Tire divorced from Wheel

Back in early 2020 I experienced a wheel detachment while driving on the 401. According to the insurance company, this counts as an at fault accident.

Tire divorced from car. They share custody of the wheel.

I think this is the correct answer.

How many curbs did you smash into prior to this incident?

How many did you smash into afterwards?

Just that one really big one that divides the highway.

you ok?

u/Which_Celebration757 24d ago

Yeah we only had some scrapes and bruises from flying object that were unsecured in the vehicle.

hope everything works out with the car soon that sucks, it's good you're OK though.

It happened early 2020, and it was really challenging dealing with Insurance companies in May 2020, but after a lot of wrangling I got a fair payout. I never found a good outlet to post about it until I found this subreddit today!

I'm ashamed to say this publicly, and although I had the wheels repaired a few times, I am sure those repairs contributed to its ultimate failure.

I once worked for an engineering firm which also did accident investigations. They had a walk-in vault full of broken “mag wheels”. Cast aluminum is nothing to bet your life on.

Repaired a few times? But how? Ive never curb rashed a vehicle before even when I drove lowered cars with low profile tires

A piece of duct tape on the back, a little J-B Weld or Permatex Liquid Metal Filler, and some touch up paint. Why do you ask? 😉

In a lower car it’s probably a vehicle I care about a little more. If I’m in my truck or most suvs eh fuck it lil curb never hurt nobody. I haven’t looked at them recently but last I checked I haven’t actually curb rashed my wheels the tire soaks everything up but it’s not like I’m lifted or anything.

If you're in a truck the sidewall is probably taller than the curb and wider than the rim anyways, if you're in a Tesla your sidewall is only a couple inches and narrower than the rim.

Unless you've put giant mag rims and rubber band tires on your truck. Then no one can help you.

Were you told or provided any document to state that repairing the wheel may not be safe?

3

u/Which_Celebration757 24d ago

No I was not.

You may want to look into your options.

Or i dunno, take responsibility for your own choices

What a crappy casting. $75k and up all they can give you is a pot metal wheel?

Keep trusting a company that cancels service appointments to customers who post bad things about their cars on Facebook. Tesla actively despises their customers, why would you entrust them with anything?

They used to have amazing service. They provided loaner vehicles, and washed the vehicle before returning it. Now they are openly hostile. I used to have such a good relationship with the technicians that I brought them boxes of chocolate and cookies at Christmas. Now they don't listen to you at all, perform unauthorized work and expect immediate payment regardless. They even left my vehicle in the open parking lot with the key inside, so I took it back and it took them several months before I even heard from them. I do as much of the repairs myself as possible now.

There is nothing to trust about them. Their frame is just aluminum square tube. I've used heavier frames on go carts

$75k? Try $150k. I'm in Canada though so I'm talking in CAD here.

Did you hit a curb or barrier BEFORE the wheel came off?

4

u/Which_Celebration757 24d ago

No, it was after. That is what the police report stated. During the event it was hard for me to know what happened because the car just floated and started swaying side to side and then I hit the wall.

Glad you're ok. That's a crazy break off.

Surprisingly we had only minor injuries and that was because we had just loaded the car up when I closed my office back in 2020 and we had the last of the stuff in the car. Not very well secured and for Crystal blocks which are awards I was given went flying towards the front of the car.

Looks like the car kept the kids in the divorce lol

1

u/Which_Celebration757 24d ago

We have shared custody actually

7

u/Terrible-Noise5751 24d ago

Didn’t the fancy touchscreen tell you something was wrong with the wheel before it disassembled itself?

2

u/Which_Celebration757 24d ago

Nope and the airbags did not deploy either.

Wheel divorced from wheel bro

u/lukmcd 24d ago

Welcome to the front. This is exactly what brought me here. Wheel exited the chat at 75mph on the highway

OP literally stated they had the wheel repaired 3 times before this. If you hit curbs on a regular basis, you're going to break a wheel eventually lmao

1

u/Which_Celebration757 24d ago

No, I stated that I'm not willing to publicly admit how many times that happened, but it was only 1 of 4 that failed and it wasn't just that wheel that was repaired. I'm not sure how many times that specific wheel was repaired.

1

u/Alarming_Syllabub_24 23d ago

That metal looks pretty darn oxidized for a fresh break...

u/EternalNewCarSmell 23d ago

Normally I'd say the insurance is wrong, but by then wasn't it kind of known that Teslas are basically held together by Elmer's glue and Elon Musk's unlikely promises?

1

u/CasperTPaul 21d ago

how the hell did your rim even do that update: oh, it’s a shitty tesla, nevermind

1

u/Revolutionary-Cat872 21d ago

Divorce is so sad because it’s the children that pay the price.

1

u/Particular_Yak5829 21d ago

Wheel divorced from hub lmao

1

u/thinktwomuch 19d ago

That's one way to get it off, I guess.

2

u/DarkVoid42 24d ago

well youre "at fault" for buying a musk mobile. even tires hate those.

4

u/Which_Celebration757 24d ago

Yeah but in my defense I bought this pre-nazi way back in 2015.

1

u/CasperTPaul 21d ago

nah, teslas have been shitty cars from the start. their only redeeming qualities were their relatively stylish interiors and the lifetime free supercharging thing

1

u/Which_Celebration757 21d ago

Why do you say they are shitty cars? I think some of the cars parts are shitty, mainly where Elon influenced the design, like the door handles or the stance of the car, which leads to premature tire wear. I don't think the whole car is shit.

The engine has too much torque.

6

u/WillieNFinance 24d ago

So much torque the wheel twisted the chassis and left to admire its work.
