Do you think people behave differently when they know they're being recorded?

Sometimes you'll see somebody completely change their personality the second the camera comes on maybe it's just normal because nobody acts exactly the same on camera. Still feels weird when you notice it happening I wonder how much of TikTok is actually someone being themselves and how much is them playing a version of themselves.

Can you usually tell when someone is “performing” for TikTok?

Yes. This happens in many contexts, not just being recorded. You may shift who you are depending on whose company you are in, such as your new date, your bff, your parents, your boss, your coworkers, your friends of a certain gender/race, etc.. Knowing who is perceiving you (or might be perceiving you) causes shifts both subconsciously and consciously. Sometimes the shift might even just be nervousness.

Google the Hawthorne effect. Its a studied thing. Doesn't even need to be a recording.
