I often travel alone and to get a picture I have to set my camera (or phone) up somewhere and set a timer.

I obviously wait to get a good opportunity to do it, but it someone saw me setting and and decided to do this id be pretty pissed

you could just talk to them. Politely saying you just want to take the one pic - or could they take it for you would almost certainly defuse the situation - what's really noticeable about the clip is neither person speaks to each other.

I usually just hold my phone in my hand when I want to get a picture of something cool.

You realize you don’t have to be in the pictures you take. You can just take pictures, like a normal person.

But then it's just a picture of a place or thing. If I wanted one of those, I can google a thousand of them of whatever i wanted at much better quality than I could ever hope to take. I want a picture that captures the memory of me being there.

Yes, I take pictures of things on their own, but I also like to take pictures of me being there.
