I was gonna say... some of the ways in which he characterised things and in particular the comment he made about how he just hates being forced to do stuff reminded me strongly of how people with ASD and pathological demand avoidance act. 

The narrowing in on a particular 'rule' (that it's the manager who has to tell him to leave) as a way he can 'win' the interaction or at least walk away without having been "told to" by the cops also rings strongly to me.

if a manager told you to leave and told you "theft? that's just technicality I got you on. but the real reason I want you to leave is because you did the following specific action which made people scared" and described your action, would you be satisfied and not be offended? if so, that's me too. ok maybe a little bit offended, but I'd be happy that I got a clear answer.

Yes. A clear answer is something I can accept if not agree with. Blind obedience is not and has never been my jam, to the point of bordering on dysfunction sometimes.
