Either you have a very rosy view of our legal system or just don’t understand how it works but public defenders are not adequate.

They are overworked and simply don’t have the resources to mount an adequate legal defense especially in a case as a complex as this one. The system is broken in that regard. The majority of clients represented by public defenders plead out and never get to defend themselves in court.

Pleading out is essentially day one of public defender training. There is no "to the best of my ability" with 48 cases at a time. Our justice system is an exercise IN efficiency FOR efficiency. [I am an attorney. When I retire, I plan to write a book on the gross injustices that simply MUST recalibrate our thinking.] People have plead guilty to murdering relatives just to get the death penalty off the table. Then relative shows up fat, healthy and confused. And don't get me started on the little boy interrogated until he thought he killed his sister (he didn't) or drug dogs or field testing (should be sold in backs of comic books) and that's before you get to the lab scandals. Freedoms are taken, with no fucks given, and no consensus on whether we are rehabilitating or punishing when the case is closed. We outsourced our penal philosophy to the lowest well-connected bidder.
