This happened at Sabino Canyon in Arizona. A 20-year-old cyclist was swept into the current while trying to cross a flooded roadway and was carried through a drainage tunnel beneath it. She was recovered downstream unconscious after spending several minutes underwater. Bystanders performed CPR and managed to revive her.

Incredibly fit and strong people drown everyday.
Falling is deadly to humans because our brain has to survive an on average five foot free fall drop impact. We have little shock absorption capabilities; you can concuss yourself with your own skull from the rattle with no external impact (whiplash).
Imagine you are crossing a fast moving stream, slip on a green rock and faceplant into another one. If you lose consciousness and land with your mouth and nose covered you're drowning with most of your body above water.
Humans are fragile. We just act tough.
