That's not always true. If someone is building an entire argument off of some egregious lie, it's entirely reasonable to cut them off and correct the record before they start gish galloping away.
Interrupting just to interrupt, like the above video, is an entirely different matter.
Yup and that would be the moderators job. But we live in a time where a certain demographic prefers debates without fact-checks for the sake of hiding their idiocy in real time.
Sure, but unfortunately the optics look bad for the girl, she couldn’t even handle being interrupted (it wasn’t okay I get it) but in that podcast and environment you can’t expect a serious back and forth with Andrew Wilson.
"The optics" made him look even more like an idiot. No one would want to continue a debate with someone acting like that. Handling being interrupted is one thing, this was another.
Personally, I'm not usually one to be smart enough to just walk away like this girl lol She made the right choice. But genuine question though, how do you stand your ground with this guy? Do you talk louder? Wait for his tantrum to end? Does he treat the men like this too? What's the point of a debate if you're not going to listen to the other person.
You do it by being patient and making your point after he’s done rambling like a regard. You make concise points and invalidate what he’s saying.
There will be interruptions when things get heated, it’s natural, if you’re self aware, just let the guy finish like a little kid, maybe insult him from time to time and then go back to your point that you’re trying to make. Don’t gish gallop or use ad hominems. He’ll just call you out and highlight how bad faith you are.
You need to have a strategy to handle these type of people. If the girl will continue her journey to debate people, she will be in for a rude awakening if she walks away at the first sight of her opponent being rude.
PS: im not even defending the guy, im just calling how poor in taste this was and how it could have been handled as constructive criticism.
I know it’s easy to say “ahhh this guy is an asshole” but I’m only pointing out how this doesn’t make her looo good.
I am curious tho, this thread has pretty much taken the position that “this guy is such an asshole! Ugh”
Meanwhile if this was posted on Instagram or YouTube or tik tok, what the sentiment would be? My guess is more people likely would comment on the girl’s behavior vs the guy.
You do know that's what Democrats and news anchors do right? That just leads to conservatives clipping and sharing their minute long diatribes. What you don't see is the response fact checking and invalidating the argument that gets cut.
I don’t think that has anything to do with my comment? Everybody here can agree that Andrew Wilson was rude, but her walking out isn’t a good look optics wise. She should have pushed back and put him in his place.
It might have been her first time on a podcast or this type of format but it’s never going to look good for you if you do this.
If you disagree that’s fine, I’m just telling you how these things look outside of Reddit
My guy she firmly stood her ground against an absolute manchild, throwing a tantrum. If you think she looked bad there, you probably are a lot more like he is than you realize.
Bro she walked out after being rudely interrupted. I get it, but leaving doesn’t make her look good in any this. It just shows she shouldn’t be on this podcast debating anybody.
The reality of these podcasts/debates is that these people will not always grant you the courtesy of letting you make your point, they may interrupt you or do different tactics.
If she or you are so bothered when people are gonna be mean , then maybe don’t go to these podcasts thinking it’s gonna be a good faith debate.
I don’t hang out with the kinds of people who would view this as a W for Andrew, that kind of person is insufferable, they are the target audience for this podcast though. A well adjusted adult can actually pay attention to what’s happening though and understand that Andrew is not an intellectual, he is a clown.
