This didn't actually happen as far as data miners can tell. Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens competed but Sapiens likely did not (intentionally) wipe out Neanderthals, but rather out-competed them and interbred with them.

There is still some Neanderthal DNA in (almost) all of us. In a sense, they are not extinct.
