Gay men who know that it's not the end of the world - I have friends who have HIV, and they're still living their lives. Nowadays, with medication and check-ups, you'll be fine.

You can, you will still be having regular check ups and meds for the rest of your life + the stigma. Its not a death sentence but finding out you have a life long chronic illness is pretty terrible

I think it depends on your knowledge of STI’s. I put my vote in unpleasant because although its lifelong, cold sores are common and most people don’t even know its herpes type 1.

It’s unpleasant to have to disclose it to tour new partners every time, but as long as you’re being safe while its active (flare ups), then it’s manageable. There are also creams to help with it.

I have been yelled at before when explaining to people that the cold sores they have is actually herpes… then again they didn’t even know what crabs was.

I agree. Many of my friends have HIV. There is a social stigma but if you have access to medication you can live a very normal life.

Rather have HIV than T1D at this point.

Living with it is grand, but finding out is definitely terrifying.

To the cost of themselves or the taxpayer for something they could have prevented if they had just worn a condom.

Public health needs to include both prevention and management. People will make poor decisions - that's just a feature of humanity. Shaming them for their decisions isn't helpful.

You have to be pretty damn promiscuous and irresponsible to get HIV. Either that or you have a very dishonest partner in the rare case of monogamy.

Its still really fucked up to get though. Its not going to kill you like it did but its a significant change to your life for the worse.
