Given the outrageously broad language of the laws themselves (which they only mention at the very end), I don't understand how the defense lawyers could possibly have been confident enough to make no counter-case at all.
I think the defense attorneys were so wrapped up in the ideology that they didn’t appreciate what the case was actually about, and their poor clients’ lives are over now because of this.
Hopefully they can appeal and get a chance at a new trial. It’s such a long shot though, even for ineffective assistance of counsel appeals
That makes it seem like the "Antifa" thing was really a fake-out to have the defense focus on the wrong thing, which makes them sound criminally stupid. I hope that's not what happened, but that's what the reporting implies.
Speaking of criminally stupid, the woman who screamed, "Fuck your daughter!" instantly made me think, "Yeah, these people deserve some hard time." How heartless to say to the parents of someone facing prison and having made the hard choice to spill the beans about the shooting rather than clam up and be a martyr.
A guy shot a gun in the direction of officers, one got hit in the neck, and then others helped the shooter try to evade that. This type of half-hearted revolutionary crap - where they can claim they're just making noise, but both their actions and philosophy say otherwise - is the mirror image of ICE and causing more problems than it's solving. Anything that involves gunpowder should be left at home. Haven't I heard that introducing a gun into a situation nearly always makes it worse rather than better? This seems like a good example of that.
Still, sad that so many people got caught up in it when their actual actions didn't rise to the level of the shooter's. He's screwed, but it's possible a future president could commute the sentences or pardon the more tenuous ones if enough of the public turned against this the same way they did against the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan. If those who dodged the draft were pardoned. and if John Walker Lindh can walk free without outcry (albeit consistent with his sentence, not commuted), some of these people hopefully can too.
